  • For months now, tens of thousands of US and NATO troops have been positioned along Ukraine’s western borders, with the most sophisticated war machinery in the world. Their leaders have issued thundering threats to Russian President Vladimir Putin. Yet, Russia unleashed air power, tanks and 190000 troops and has invaded Ukraine. Ukrainian civilians, reservists and troops are fighting a valiant but unequal battle, nearly 150 civilians including children have been killed within barely three days. So where is NATO and why isn’t it helping Ukrainians fight the Russians? In an exclusive conversation with Padma Rao Sundarji for Times Online, India’s generals Ata Hasnain and Shokin Chauhan provide the answers.

50 years ago, in 1971, the USA threatened India to stop the 1971 war with Pakistan.
Kissinger spurred Nixon to send the US 7th Fleet’s Task Force, led by the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Enterprise, to the Bay of Bengal.
When Pakistan's defeat in the 1971 war seemed imminent, America dispatched the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Enterprise towards the Bay of Bengal. The US 7th Fleet’s Task Force also had USS King and USS Decatur.
The move was deemed by India as a nuclear threat.
The USS Enterprise, at 75,000 ton, was the world's largest nuclear-powered aircraft carrier in the 1970s with more than 70 fighter aircraft. A monster.
The Indian Navy’s fleet was led by the 20,000-ton aircraft carrier, Vikrant, with 20 light fighter aircraft.
The USS Enterprise was being dispatched to secure American citizens in Bangladesh was the official American statement. Unofficially, it was to threaten the Indian forces and prevent the liberation of East Pakistan.
India soon got an another bad news.
Soviet intelligence reported to India that a powerful British naval group led by the aircraft carrier HMS Eagle with commando carrier HMS Albion, several destroyers and other ships, were approaching India's territorial waters from the west, towards the Arabian Sea.
The British and the Americans planned a co-ordinated pincer attack to intimidate India: the British ships in the Arabian Sea will target India's western coast, while the Americans would make a dash to Chittagong.
Caught between the British & the American ships was the Indian Navy.
It was December 1971, and the world’s two leading democracies, the US & the UK.. were threatening the world’s largest democracy, India !
*An SOS from Delhi by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, was sent to Moscow.* The Red Navy soon dispatched 16 Soviet Naval Units and six Nuclear Submarines from Vladivostok, to block the USS Enterprise.
Admiral N. Krishnan, the chief of the Eastern Command of the Indian Navy, wrote in his book, 'No Way But Surrender' that he was afraid that the Americans will reach Chittagong. He mentions how they even thought of attacking USS Enterprise, in a 'do or die' move, to slow it down.
On December 2nd week 1971, the US 7th Fleet’s Task Force, led by the monstrous USS Enterprise arrived in the Bay of Bengal. The British fleet was arriving in the Arabian Sea. The world held its breath.
Unknown to the Americans, the submerged Soviet submarines had overtaken them.
As USS Enterprise moved towards East Pakistan, the Soviet submarines surfaced without any warning. The mighty Soviet submarines were now between India & the USS Enterprise. The Americans were shocked.
Admiral Gordon told the 7th American Fleet Commander: *"Sir, we are too late. The Russians are here."*
Both the American and British fleets backed off.
Today, most Indians have forgotten about this colossal naval chess battle between the two superpowers the US & the USSR, in the Bay of Bengal.
After suffering badly in Vietnam, the Americans were again outmanoeuvred by the Soviets.

As an Afghan vet, you should know how Russia's invasion of Afghanistan went. I was there in 2002 so I was definitely able to get some perspective as the people that my unit, also airborne, came into contact with still had memory of the Russian invasion.
Sorry, but these two clowns completely missed the mark. They clearly do not understand the Ukrainian mentality, nor do they take history well into account.
Russia supported an insurrection in Ukraine in 2014, read up on "little green men". He also annexed Crimea. This was in direct response to a massive protest in Ukraine that ended in the Ukrainian head of state, a Russian puppet similar to Belarus's Lukashenko, being removed in favor of a west oriented government of liberal democracy, wanting to join EU and NATO.
Look at Putin's stated goals, acceptance of "russian sphere of influence, give up the notion of western alignment and "denazification". This is not some "special operation as he's calling it. He's looking to "liberate" Ukraine from its western dream. He wants them pining for the glory days of the USSR. If you have a netflix account, check out a documentary called "Winter on Fire".
Putin did not expect global attention or stiff resistance. This was a carefully laid trap (by the CIA probably) to get Russia stuck in a quagmire where they'd waste blood and treasure and be of no use to a belligerent Communist China. Ukraine has more stingers and Javelins than Afghanistan had in the 80s. This is the reason why Ukraine wasn't allowed to join NATO after 2014 when they were begging to join. If they'd been in Nato, Russia would not be stuck in this mess. because they would not have invaded, which was exactly what we wanted them to do.
It's payback for his recent nonsense like offering bounties on our boys in A-stan a couple of years ago and probably Havana Syndrome.

Some of our bretherine are definitely "volunteers" in the Ukrainian foreign division. People think Russia is so mighty and since they're near, that Ukraine has no hope, but the assymetry was even greater in Afghanistan in the 80s. This is going exactly as America planned.

As an American and very upset of what is happening to the Ukrainian people, it’s insights from these respected generals that give us pause to take a realistic view of what we can and cannot do. Since this war started I’ve read a lot of history about Russia, Ukraine, and American foreign policy in dealing with Russia and I keep coming back to the missed opportunities we had when the old Soviet Union collapsed. Why we didn’t attempt to work closer together and tried to build some kind of trust between us. Instead we came up with a policy to allow former Soviet states such as Georgia and Ukraine to join NATO right in the backyard of the Russian bear. Russia protested all these policies, but we kept pushing and now Putin is pushing back. Even the NATO allies at that time when President George W. Bush was president thought that wasn’t a very good idea but went along with it. Now we can’t protect those people and they’re being slaughtered on the streets and when it’s all over, the Russian will have achieved two objectives. One, bringing Ukraine back in line and part of Russia and finally the Ukrainian people will remember NATO and the United States abandoned them and will hate all of us for that. If the U.S. was in the same situation and Russia decided to let Mexico into its sphere of influence, do you think we would just sit by and allow that to happen? Hell no! Yep, we screwed the pooch on that one. God help us all if cooler heads don’t prevail. God bless the Ukrainian people

American's are to blind to see what's under their own nose. We are no longer the big boss on the block. Our government is corrupt and just a bunch of criminals who live by their own set of rules and take what they want and pay no taxes. We are divided by race, class, religion, cultural and political parties and beliefs. We are a failing nation that is for sale to the highest bidder and our politicians are for rent. Come one come all. Well at least the world can use us for an immigration dumping ground. Inflation is out of control and the Arabs are bleeding our economy dry by jacking the price of oil so high. We are in for a big fall. Russia and China are the real superpowers and the rich OPEC countries can buy and control any of these whores they want.

China has tried several time to take over our land and we have beaten them back every time. And we are smart enough not depend on others for our protection. They have never helped us before and never will. Our army, navy and airforce are more than capable enough. And read your news correctly, we are not with Russia or against Ukraine. We are NEUTRAL. You understand the meaning don't you? Because this whole scenario cannot be solved by continuing this war, but only through finding common ground and diplomacy. It's the people who are suffering and their protection and safety is paramount, which will not happen if the war drags on. Maybe always jumping into the field guns blazing should not be the first solution. Ever thought about that?

The game isn't over, not by a long shot. As long as the Ukrainian army is fighting, resisting and outperforming the attacking Russian army, the game is still on. Ukraine at least is making excellent use of the weapons and other equipment given by the NATO countries and other countries in the world. What has India done or have it given any support for the Ukrainians, even after the atrocities done by the Russian army to civilians in Mariupol, Bucha and other Ukrainian cities and villages? The NATO might not yet be ready for a full scale war but that doesn't mean it is powerless. War isn't only about manpower and numbers, it is also about equipment quality, training, resolve, command & control, tactics and intelligence. At least the Ukrainian and also NATO soldiers knows what they are fighting for if it comes to pass, does the average Russian soldier knows it too?

      History:
      1) The Puppet State
It all started when the president refused to sign a "great" deal with European Union and instead signed with Russia. This led civils to started protesting, originating diferent moviments including the avoc. After a while the protests gave raise to a civil war, and the president ran to russia.
      2) Anexation of Crimea
In response, Russia sized this opportunity to anex Crimea(not judging here;)) In retaliation the ukranians closed Crimea ONLY water supply, forcing it to drought. This conflit fuel even more the nationalist spirit of ukranians. I belive at this time, the bombardements of Dognbas(sorry if I misspelled it;( ) started between pro-west and pro-russians.
      3)"Russian Agression"
After years of conflit, russia decided to invade ukrain by force when ukrain was about to join Nato. The Article 5 of Nato, would prevent russia from helping the separatist regions and with an attempt to prevent Ukrain from joining Nato, it initialized a full scale attack. At first it just target the "pro-russian regions", but in a full scaled operation it attempted to sieze kyev and touple the legitment government.
Retrospective: Putin "invasion" of the pro-russian regions of Ukrain seems "acceptable". However, attempting to touple a legitment government to force the adoptiong of a puppet state that serves the interest of russia, is where I have to draw the line. The claim of "neo-nazis" shouldnt be an excuse, Putin should have attempted a diplomatic resolution.

Exactly my thoughts. The western response has been WAY too extreme - Way too quick, Way too optimistic, Way too blatantly anti-russian, Way too pro-unkranian, Way too uncharacteristically united - to be real. It's all a huge, planned propaganda campaign. Why? Because we know how this kind of conflict plays out. It's happened a hundred times over the past 2 decades, here there and everywhere. We know the response from international organizations like the UN, We know the Media coverage, we know the US response, We know how the conflict plays out. This conflict has WAY exceeded anything close to normal reaction, despite being a relatively normal military conflict. The exact same thing happened in Crimea in 2014 and Georgia in 2008, to Drastically different responses. Why the explosive backlash this time? Because it's been planned, coordinated, staged, and a executed by the west - governments, media, and businesses - for a long time. This was the perfect trigger for this plan of action, long in the making, And they've overdone it, which for me really takes away any authenticity of any of the western response. You don't care about the people of Ukraine, If you did you'd have helped Ukraine join NATO years ago. You're drooling over how perfect of a situation this is for shaping public opinion about Russia - The greatest threat to the US's (and western world's) current, and fading, global dominance. "Ohh man, Those poor Ukrainian people, Look at how awful Russia is, Russia's really terrible, Can we all agree Russia is awful and everyone do everything they can to hurt Russia economically and technologically and financially so we can eliminate the risk them overtaking us as the world's dominate superpower? That'd really help us stay in power, and the Ukrainian people too, Remember this is totally about them, and not at all about us trying to hurt our greatest rival."
The icing on the cake is how the EU is trying to ban RT and other Russian news sites. Gotta love that commitment to Freedom and Democracy ! If you start hearing factual, Not emotional, arguments about the situation, it might undo all the propaganda the west has gotten from this golden situation , I mean Horrible Situation for the people of Ukraine.
