    When the new antlers grow back in the spring the velvet covering contains the blood flow to feed the new growth until the antlers are fully grown in the fall when they rub the velvet off and the antlers dry and get harder and they use them to fight

    A moose full of testosterone is like an elephant full of testosterone. They KNOW they're the biggest boys around and they'll happily take the opportunity to kick some human's ass if he rubs him the wrong way. He doesn't have anything against humans PERSONALLY... but he's a giant horned animal who's extremely moody and has a lot to prove. He's not your "friend".
    Fascinating to watch.... from a safe distance!

      All cervids (the clade containing deer) shed their antlers. They have calcified cores covered in skin, but these fall off after the rut. They regrow the antlers before the next rut, hence this behaviour. They scrape the skin off as the core calcifies, giving them bony antlers. That is one of the distinguishing characteristics of the clade.
      Bovids (antelope/cows,bison), on the other hand, have bony antlers that are permanent.

    here we see Sam Winchester eating what he usually eats: leaves. Dean is grabbing a burger. Now he is scratching his head to think because of all the hard research. Dean is once again eating a burger. Now he attempts to finally love himself, but there is something blocking the way. He decides to deal with his emotions the Dean way, suppress them and get more food. He suddenly discovers an internal conflict and deals with it accordingly, suppressing again. Now he dreams about having a future with jess and having a baby moose. Suddenly he wakes up and realizes there is a spoon in his mouth courtesy of Dean. The moose is mad.

    Why do the antlers have velvet and why does it come off? Is it like a snaked shedding so the antlers grow larger?
    And do the antlers have nerves that would make it painful as the velvet comes off?

    • @gregbalvin
      @gregbalvin  Před 9 lety +2

      BlastFromYesterday The antlers grow new every year and the velvet supplies them with blood as they grow. The antlers are very sensitive until the velvet comes off in mid-august and the bone hardens. The antlers fall off every year around Easter time.

    • @seaflyfisher
      @seaflyfisher Před 9 lety +3

      Blast - its the fastest growing bone in the animal kingdom - they shed every year and regrow in 12 to 17 weeks - they will be pretty much the same shape every year but usually with the addition of an extra tine - if you look at the antlers, you can see where the veins were in the velvet which is blood filled tissue - amazing aren't they

    I'm laughing and a bit sorry for asking what may seem such a stupid question, but it occurred to me while watching a few videos of bull moose going at each other and after a bit has become quite a curiosity. Well here goes....if you are nearby 2 bull moose when they are going at each other and are in the height of it after having locked up together....if you were say within 50 feet of them and jumped out and bolted straight at them yelling and growling at them as loud as you could what would happen? Would they jump and run for their lives, would one or both turn and chase you down and kill you, would they both just stop and stare at you, what would happen?
    Thanks much

      Rich Schreiner What ever you do keep your distance from these animals at all times. I have seen nearly a hundred moose in New Hampshire and Maine. However, I have never seen them in battle but it does not matter. They are very unpredictable and can be very dangerous. They may seem very docile at times, but can turn deadly in an instant. Moose can weigh over a thousand pounds, they are very fast and have very sharp hooves which they will use to stomp you to death. Make no mistake, keep a safe distance and if they do charge you, RUN !!!! and try to find the nearest clump of trees or large object to hide behind for protection. Like I said, extremely unpredictable at all times and may even charge you and try and kill you for no reason whatsoever.
