Big Alaska Bull Moose Fighting -Start to Finish!
Left Hook finally returned to the valley and planted himself in 22's territory. We could see 22 a half mile away, bedded. He got up and started his slow/deliberate walk, grunting the whole way, audible across the valley despite the raging creek waters. He turned and headed up toward us, we knew Left Hook was somewhere in the hemlocks after a cow, but were waiting in a clearing in case he came out again. 22 started wagging from downhill, and then from the hemlocks came Left Hook, also wagging. Left Hook stopped to rake, and we knew this could erupt.
After jockeying for (SAFE) positioning, we were able to capture this amazing footage from two slightly different angles. It's the kind of thing one tends to watch a few times to appreciate the power and nuances as these massive animals go at it. The fur does fly. Enjoy!

It is amazing that despite having seen/filmed several fights, we have not witnessed an injury other than a couple of lamenesses. There are bulls who had eye injuries, but we never saw it happen. Truly amazing that they can avoid such damage. Thanks for the comment!

So true. And both walked away from this one. (They usually do, thankfully.) Thanks for the comment, you're so right!

SO funny how they walk into battle in such peculiar slow-motion. You would never guess they could fiercely engage based on their "entrance"!
And then they collide!
I guess its like that because Moose dont have to move fast for anybody
Humans are like that now
The beginning was like an old western when they are walking out to the main getting ready. Very cool.
Yes that's it! John Wayne coming down Main street for a gunfight. We were so lucky to be able to follow the one bull into the arena and glad that the terrain opened up to allow us to film it all. Usually they're in the trees where we can't get to them. Thanks!
Exactly what I was gonna say. It was even in slow motion. All that was missing is a tumbleweed and a woman clutching her pearls😆
@@samwoods3430 Sally, bar the door!🤣You expect to hear the Good, Bad, Ugly whistle intro here, right? DOH I should have DONE that!!
Well, at least they weren't in the "Hood." With those two bulls moving so slow leading up to the fight, one or the other would have got capped before the headbutting even started 😅!!!
@@MooseManNaturePhotosQ . 😢😂
Those dudes are HUGE!
I was expecting the hall monitor to yell-"Hey you two...break it up!"
Yeah, typical of rumbling guys, as IF they'd listen! haha. Thanks for watching! And yes, they are massive!!!
I've never hunted bullwinkles so all I know is what I've seen from videos, but...these guys may be the biggest I've ever seen on video!!!
I might have to use a gun vs my Bowie knife like I do with "just" 800lb elk 😉
@@dansherwood9851 Riiiight: You don't want to bring a knife to a moose fight!
Actually I don't think I want to attend a moose rumble. My 407" elk was as big as I want to mess with. Bent the blade on my knife, had to resort to sharp stick to the eye...😉 Or a 270wsm.
@@dansherwood9851 You're right. Stick to elk. And leave the moose and grizzlies alone!

Being from Newfoundland we're no strangers to moose but those Alaskan/Yukon moose are on another level. Just look at the size of those racks!! Actual giants lol. Incredible footage and scenery man, I could watch this stuff for hours.
They’re the heavy weights of moose fighters…
I remember fishing in Alaska and when we were driving there was a cow and calf walking along the road. They were like Northern Ontario on steroids
We see em here in Finland a lot too and they do grow massive here too.
Display of massive antlers is so awesome ❤
@@draw2death421 oh hello, my fellow Finn!
Myös Suomi mainittu torilla tavataan!
What's incredible is that they so carefully choreographed their fight, and splined their massive and lethal antlers in such a way as neither of them drew blood on the other in spite of the fact each appeared to weigh in at close to a ton each!
R8qcvbb
You are so right. t never ceases to amaze us how few serious injuries occur with these fights. We've witnessed several, known for a couple of injuries (eye, leg) but nothing that took a life. (We did not witness the tragic fight this year between Grumpy and the mystery bull, and are glad for that.) Want to keep ti that way! Meanwhile, Swagger lives, so he survived his leg injury, and Left Hook may be blind or partially so at least in one eye, but is otherwise thriving. Phew! Thanks for the comment!
i think the one on the left is bigger and probably older
@@davidburns3480 He is. Older. Wiser. WIDER. And we were surprised by the younger bull's moxie to take him on and even go at him from downhill. Impressive!
@@MooseManNaturePhotos how come you didn't film the end where I single handedly, bare handed wrestled each bull, ain't nothin tho
Amazing how much more tactical these fights are than bighorn or even elk fights
Yes, they are. Interesting observation. I guess there's a lot at stake here. Death, being one. Thanks for the comment!

My goodness, those antlers are massive. Majestic animals
They are very wide and large antlers there, and you're right on the majestic animals part too. Just so incredible being there filming them. We pinch ourselves. (But we also have the blisters to show for it!)😁 Thanks for watching, Matthew!
Thanks for sharing such a magnificent slice of wildlife. You guys did a great job in capturing the action while staying safe.
Thanks for that, Earl. We got lucky following that bull into the clearing. We grabbed trees knowing what was going to go down. Appreciate the comment and thanks for being here!
AND IN THIS CORNER!.....now that's a heavyweight fight!!! Outstanding...Thanks for sharing!
Thank you for watching, Philip. Yes, we got lucky for this one for sure! Watched the ultimate winner walk from a mile away, making 3 creek crossings, and climb up the mountainside, and without stopping to catch his breath he wagged right into the arena and took on the younger (but very impressive) bull. It was the older bull's turf, so...beat it, buster!
"Bro that human is watching, let's look like we're fighting."
Yeah, they over acted then! They were really fighting. But I first thought they were going to hug it out.
The Old Boy got the High ground and pushed down hill. Smart Old Moose.
That's Rule Number One, right? get the upper ground advantage! Thanks for watching, Brandon!
I've read that given the amount of energy it takes for these big boys to fight and the serious damage they can do to each other, such fights are usually over pretty quickly with one bowing out rather than taking it to an extreme. Usually no one is badly hurt. This proves the theory. Aren't they absolutely magnificent?
It's a test of strength not a death fight
It's true, they really aren't out to kill one another, just best the other. It's all about mating rights. That is the only reason they fight. It's rare that death occurs. There can be lockups that will kill both bulls but that's not their intent; that's a freak thing. And the bull that spins out or calls uncle is allowed to leave without a chase. It is respected. Sometimes they are more civilized than humans. Thanks very much for the comment, you're so very right, Cindy!
@@MooseManNaturePhotos heh I suppose it's a moose version of them playing rock paper scissors with each other
@@Roger__Wilco 🤣 Only just a TAD more physical!
@@MooseManNaturePhotos Not gonna lie, I've watched A LOT of animal videos and I'm surprised that it's not 'fight to the death'. Since a lot of animal species will go to that extreme.
The sound, too, is interesting
It's pretty dramatic, getting to film a moose fight. The ground shakes!
They must have their own language. It's like 1, 2, 3, GO!
We have analyzed these films in slo mo to see just what sparks the kickoff but we figure they must just give each other the hairy eyeball and someone turns their antlers a certain way, and BAMMO! So weird because they seem to take forEVER making their minds up! Thanks for the comment, Theresa!
Powerful animals
Yes, sort of like two small locomotive engines.
The old one on the right acting so nonchalant,
then C R A✨️S H!!
He's actually younger! But you're right; at one point I thought he was going to decide to leave. (.That happens a lot at the last second.) We were pretty shocked to see him go through with it! Thanks for watching
I was glad to see them both walk away and live to fight another day. It looks to me like there is plenty of land out there for both of them to have their very own territory without a fight to the finish. They really are magnificent creatures! I love watching the video of the man who takes his trash out to the shed and when he turns around a HUGE moose is walking toward him. He immediately goes back in the shed and shuts the door and the moose stands there and waits for him to come out for just a few minutes and then goes on about his business. I have watched that video a dozen or more times.
They usually do walk away, thankfully Maryann, otherwise I'd not want to film a fight! And while bulls do tend to keep to a particular area, t's not about territory they fight over, it's the cows. So wherever the cows go, the bulls want to be. In this instance the younger bull had some cows in the older bull's area, because the older bull had wandered another mile and some away for other cows. It gets crazy out there. And I saw that video too, of the guy and the shed. Funny stuff! Thanks for watching!!
Now I gotta see the shed video
Amazing! And the beauty of the landscape! The colors!
It's an awesome display of power and might, and to take place in those gorgeous mountains of Alaska? Surreal. Thanks for the comment and for being here!
These guys are clearly bros.
Hard to say, but they sure were well matched! Thanks for the comment.
@@MooseManNaturePhotos there also seemed to be a level of respect paid to each other where they locked antlers first instead of poking each others' eyes out with their antlers when they could. Thank you for the video!
@@matthewforster2661 Yes, they do seem to show respect, it's odd and cool at the same time. There are a lot of eye injuries out there but that's to be expected, a very vulnerable body part for sure. Thanks for the comment!

@@gizzyfrizzy1 Wow, that's an awesome comment, thank you to you and your son! He's so right; It's NOT easy getting a fight filmed. They were all a challenge! Thanks for joining and watching and growing with us. (You'll see our early shaky work, and appreciate that we came from humble beginnings.) We remain a work in progress! Thanks again!
They pause like...we don't have to do this, ya know?....but they cant help their instincts❤
I know I thought they were going to hug it out but they went for it and that kind of surprised us. What's interesting about bull moose is that if at that moment one decided to opt out, all he'd have to do is whine submission and turn away. That's considered a win for the other bull. They have a code, apparently. Thanks for watching and for the comment, Karen!
Great camera work

You're welcome, we were lucky to get it! Thanks for watching!
Pretty gentlemanly contest. No cheap shots or attempts to actually hurt each other... just who's the strongest (and most persistent) in head on clashes.
So true, and that's usually the way the fights go that we've witnessed, anyway. One bull makes a point, the other concedes. End of story. Nobody gets chased after the white flag, it's over. On to the next. Rather sporting, actually. Thanks for the comment!
Epic battle!
It sure was, we were SO glad to have been there to record it all! Thanks for watching CA!
Before it starts i got the one on the left he looks very formidable
They both are. The older bull has a wider rack and had the uphill advantage. The younger bull (loser) has a LOT of antler but...well, maybe next time!

That pre-fight walk up was some serious swagger.
How they don’t get intertwined, really incredible ,a great video 👑👑
Thanks very much. They do, at times, get antler locked but for the most part they can spin out of a lock. Glad they both walked away from this one! Appreciate the comment!
Magnificent capture and filming. The one on the left was bigger and used his strength. Explains why Grizzlies want nothing to do with them.
Alaskan Moose are legit some of the biggest animals in North America. They are massive. Way bigger than the moose down here in the Rockies.
You're right, TK. The Yukon subspecies is the largest of the 4 major subspecies of moose. The next is the northeast moose, then BC/northwest, then the Rockies moose. They are still all VERY large and formidable animals though! And you never want to insult a cow! Thanks for the comment and for watching!
Used to see this all the time when we lived in Alaska. Boom. Love to have you on my wall ❤️
Those antlers on both moose are massive! Love the sound of antlers smashing into each other. Wonderful video of nature's beauty.
Thanks, it's always heart stopping being in the midst of two fighting bull moose, as long as we're safe and they both walk away, it's a win/win no matter who "wins"... The ground beneath us shakes (tundra is spongy) and the sounds are, indeed most impressive. Glad you enjoyed!

Nature is still an amazing thing.
I was Elk hunting in the panhandle of Idaho, on a finger, glassing below and i heard twigs and brush cracking behind me.
I slowly looked over my shoulder and there stood a moose much like in this video.
He seemed dark, huge paddles, seemed to rival a large horse in size.

Most fights end with a bull running off. In fact every fight we've witnessed and filmed have ended that way. Agreeing to disagree is better all the way around. Thanks for the comment!

We did get lucky for sure that day Carol!
Great photography, and right there in our backyard (sort of). Having just been 'up there' today to look around and walking off trail makes one realize how adept these guys are at getting around in the first place, not to mention fighting, which includes backward and forward movements. We little humans would have broken a leg in that uneven terrain in no time, if we had to maneuver without eyes fixed to the ground.
Thank you A! And sorry I didn't see this comment until now. Yes, getting around that terrain with only 2 legs/feet is difficult. The muskeg especially.
