  • A mix of topic including my trip to California to attend the Bar-Z Summer Bash where I got to visit with other CZcams creators as well as many of my viewers. It was a blast! Also viewer gifts both from the Bash and that were sent to me in the mail. Finally a couple of shots of some track work being done at the museum.

    Keith,
    Thanks for the re-hash of the Bar Z Bash. I'm really sorry I missed it. Looks like you came home with a lot of cool swag, etc. I've watched a couple of videos, where the Union Pacific Railroad has a machine that lifted the rails, removed the wooden ties and replaced them with concrete ties. Another machine came along and flipped these metal clips made into the ties around to hold the rain to the tie. It was really amazing!
    Thanks, as always, for another great video.
    Have a good one . . . and stay cool!
    Dave

      +Swarf Rat The Norfolk Southern line runs through Tifton and every couple of years the track gang comes through doing track work. I have stopped and just watched those guys work before as it is amazing what they can do with all of that automated equipment. They barely even have to touch anything by hand anymore. Of course, all of that is set up to run on standard gauge so it is not much use on our narrow gauge track at the museum. Even though, there was a Norfolk Southern crew in town a few weeks ago working on one of the spur lines and most of that work was still done by hand for some reason.

    Thanks, Keith. It was nice to see you at Stan's Summer Bash. Too bad it was so hot... much cooler this weekend. So now that all of those railroad ties have been replaced, can you drive the locomotive faster than 5 mph? I think you will like that flatbelt company. I found them very good to work with. Were you able to order them in black? Thanks again for another good video, Keith. Joe

      Joseph Magedanz That was about as hot as I have been in quite a while, but not too bad in the shade. At least you guys don't have the humidity out there like we do down south. If you guys had the humidity, it would have been totally unbearable! I imagine the belts will be a tan color, but I have not seen them yet. I am heading home from a business trip today and hope that they are there waiting on me as I really want to put them on tomorrow!

  • @Vsshooter
    @Vsshooter Před 9 lety

    When I was a very young teenager I witnessed the work of a mile long railroad spur being installed. 4 men with a spike driver per man driving spikes. They had a rhythm when driving spikes each would send a blow down in turn clockwise and 4 blows is all it took to drive a spike into place. The spikes came in wooden kegs and in the top of the keg would be a counter spike (miniature spike). The foreman would keep that and at the end of the day he would know how many spikes had been driven by counting the miniature counter spikes, All hand work in those days. No machinery was used.

    • @VintageMachinery
      @VintageMachinery  Před 9 lety

      +Vsshooter Very cool. The guys working at the museum often had two people driving a spike, taking turns swinging the hammer. I did not catch that on video, but it was fun to watch. I would probably have to swing it ten times just to actually hit the spike!

      jusb1066 I am sure I got in the camera at some point during the day, but there was a lot of area to cover and only a small part of it was in the camera. I chose not to participate in the four jaw competition, but I did do it for fun. I don't think anybody timed be but I got it to 0.0004" runout (which was as good as the bearings on that lathe would allow). Not sure if I could have beat the time in the competition or not - I know I could not have beaten Adam (but maybe Tom....)
