  • In this fun, short talk from TEDYouth, lexicographer Erin McKean encourages - nay, cheerleads - her audience to create new words when the existing ones won’t quite do. She lists out 6 ways to make new words in English, from compounding to “verbing,” in order to make language better at expressing what we mean, and to create more ways for us to understand one another.

    It is time we continued using the old English word "overmorrow" instead of saying "the day after tomorrow".
    For "the day before yesterday", you can also say "ereyesterday".

      what about "wordilly" it's just like literally in the sense that it refers to the word itself, but instead of deriving from latin it comes from english, so it may be easier to keep its meaning

    • @RufusDriscoll
      @RufusDriscoll Před 9 lety

      It actually annoys me that the whole "figuratively not literally" argument is in existence. With or without the word "literally" you are portraying that sentence as a fact and making it a metaphor. All the word "literally" does is emphasise the metaphor. It's only an issue if what you were saying could be misconstrued in any way.

    Guys stop all the hate it's actually really cool. Think how other languages have really long descriptors of regular things because they just stuck a ton of old words together. English makes new words that are short and sweet and that can convey new meaning. Also as the lingua franca of globalization, it's cool that we can assimilate different languages also.

    This clear concise presentation is so going to help so many kids, who get confused learning ever changing languages. And also adults who disagree over nothing. So often only writers and artists and linguistics related professionals understand this.
    No fundamental ideal shift will occur though, if English teaching educational systems, like the "O" levels, still mark students down for creating new words in their essays, even when they adhere to common English logic while doing so.

Maybe also a word that describes people who identify with no given view would be nice too.

      Hey druden. Long time, no see XD
      anyway i jist want you to be clear on 1 thing. Atheism and agnosticism are not relatively comparable. Atheism refers to your beliefs (lack of) and agnosticism refers to your knowledge as in you know there is no god/s
      simply put: you can be an agnostic athiest, nostic atheist, agnostic theist, or nostic theist ect ect. But you can not be agnostic without being theist or atheist.
      (Also agnostic doesnt outright mean you know there is not god. It can also mean knowing there is no way to know god, but agnostic does not mean "ignorance "

    It's nice to encourage people to create words, but not every created new word is equally good. With some experience in creating words, one starts to discern what words are more in use and what are likely to be unintelligible. For instance, those two words, that Erin have generated @ 5:59 like absquatulate was really puzzling for some audience as you can see by their look on faces just as this word was puzzling to me as a non-native English speaker. So, in order for new words to be intelligible, they need to be placed in a specific context, for meaning to become discovered.

    Is an infinite dictionary really a good idea? People struggle with the million words we already have. You can either expand your vocabulary by studying, or add redundancy by making new (often unnecessary) words.

    • @alejandrinos
      @alejandrinos Před 9 lety +1

      There are no disadvantages to an infinite dictionary. We might have an insane amount of words, but there's a defined set that most people use and understand overall. Unnecessary words naturally fall into disuse and the "set" purges itself over time.
      This talk is nice and entertaining but I doubt there's reason to worry about the language getting stagnated. New words are being created as we speak, there's no stopping this kind of evolution.
