- In this fun, short talk from TEDYouth, lexicographer Erin McKean encourages - nay, cheerleads - her audience to create new words when the existing ones won’t quite do. She lists out 6 ways to make new words in English, from compounding to “verbing,” in order to make language better at expressing what we mean, and to create more ways for us to understand one another.

It is time we continued using the old English word "overmorrow" instead of saying "the day after tomorrow".
For "the day before yesterday", you can also say "ereyesterday".
That's actually not a bad idea.
Just do it and leave it to your reader/listener to find out what it means.
In German we have the same system. Morgen = tomorrow.. overmorrow = übermorgen (über = over)
In Dutch too: overmorgen.
Only " day after" is also used- and I think its easier.
We need a new word for literally since it no longer means literally.
I propose "literliterally"
what about "wordilly" it's just like literally in the sense that it refers to the word itself, but instead of deriving from latin it comes from english, so it may be easier to keep its meaning
It actually annoys me that the whole "figuratively not literally" argument is in existence. With or without the word "literally" you are portraying that sentence as a fact and making it a metaphor. All the word "literally" does is emphasise the metaphor. It's only an issue if what you were saying could be misconstrued in any way.
Im not going to attempt to come up with a word, insteadim going to complement you on your witt. *slow clap*
That was literally the best idea ever.
her voice is so nice to listen to!!!! entertaining talk as well :)
Funny that she talks about legos, because lego is a compound of the danish word "Leg" and "Godt". In english Leg=Play, Godt=Good. Just a fun fact.
My daughter came up with "linner" that in between lunch and not quite dinner meal yet period. We use it all the time in my house.
We also use Linner in my house! We use Dunch too!
In Norway, dinner being called middag, some have started using munch (middag-lunch) in the same manner.
Now, what about second breakfast? :P
Matsu Crunch I guess that's what we ordinarily call "brunch". What does middag translates to in English?
Dinner is middag. Roughly from breakfast to dinner it would be as follows: frokost - brunch - lunch - (munch) - middag :) Some people spell lunsj instead of lunch though. Language adaption, you know.
That's for people who eat more than three meals a day, so I wouldn't be using it. If I'm feeling a bit peckish between lunch and dinner I just call it snacktime.
Exactly. That is why I've always told my friends Urban Dictionary is contributing more to English language than any other singular source. They record the evolution of the language. I know Oxford would agree with me, look at their last few years' word of the year.
factual
New words? You'd love the terminology of Heidegger. He has a vocabulary of his own.
After showing this TED talk to my eighth-grade class, they've decided that they want to create their own online dictionary. It's going to be their final project.
"They call them 'fingers', but I've never seen 'em fing... oh wait, there they go."
Short, interesting, entertaining. All ingredients of a good TED. And she even keept all those teenagers engaged in the topic. Good call! :)
"Kept" while we are on the topic.
So rare to hear an adult admit that language is an agreement between a group of people and that each tongue is up for more blends, mixtures and modifications.
My eight year old sister invented a word. "Nafungry" pronounced Nah-fun-gree and is a blend of "not full not hungry"
Oh my, I love this so much. And you’re such an informative and entertaining presenter! Thank you.
Travable: compound from travel+able, specifically used to refer to object that seem particularly well suited for travel... Such as a large scarf that doubles as a blanket & in a pinch can be used as a towel... Travable is not limited to objects but most commonly used in referring to them...
Guys stop all the hate it's actually really cool. Think how other languages have really long descriptors of regular things because they just stuck a ton of old words together. English makes new words that are short and sweet and that can convey new meaning. Also as the lingua franca of globalization, it's cool that we can assimilate different languages also.
In Indian English some words are invented and routinely used and are really useful- which aren't prevalent in British and U.S. English; such as:
prepone - opposite of postpone-(brought forward)
timepass- (just to pass the time), Just like that.
..and many more.
This clear concise presentation is so going to help so many kids, who get confused learning ever changing languages. And also adults who disagree over nothing. So often only writers and artists and linguistics related professionals understand this.
No fundamental ideal shift will occur though, if English teaching educational systems, like the "O" levels, still mark students down for creating new words in their essays, even when they adhere to common English logic while doing so.
I've invented a word: Welfaryingoscoponic. I haven't got a clue what it means, I just made it up.
HAL 9000
The dictionary needs this new addition.
It describes a particular type of feedback in social systems, where phase issues create an unexpected, amplified wave - or indeed welfaryingoscoponic effect. It is dreaded by those who pick up the tab.
I love the idea of making new words! Although.. I do still believe it’s easier to leave some of the “difficulter” ones alone. ;-) -Phill, Las Vegas
Indubitably was just in the brain and thanks to enabling the dictation feature on the device I am using, hearing it said in a playful way growing up around jazz musicians, a great algorithm and someone documenting it I could see it’s spelling. This is exciting.
"Jenga-nese"=" baby talk" & (puppy & animals) communicate. Proven grandmother plus 2 dogs!! ✔️💯✔️💯
I love the urban dictionary. I made up heartunes decades ago, and was happy to get it there. I like the word grandkids, too.
I just adore this woman.
"FAN- fabulous"= fantastic + fabulous
You are an awesome speaker. That was a great and entertaining talk. Loved it. So clever and fun!!!!
shes amazing!
Thank you
This is great. I had no idea where 'words' came from. Kinda like the chicken before the egg....LOL
I often write about pets. When pets are adopted by humans, that human becomes their "leader". While in infant stage their leader is their "mum", and when adopted they switch that attention to that human, so I refer to that person as their "Humum". HUMUM is unisex.
I have a new expression for all of you: “like butter like pancake” meaning something is perfectly put together as with things or circumstances.
Spread the word, please.
Great talk : )
When my parents were still alive, I would kid them about being "hushers!" When someone makes too much noise in church, well that's what you need the hushers for!
It was FUNTASTIC.
Fantabulous!
Not quite a spoon but not quite a fork.... Oh, I know! A fopoon!
- Key and Peele
Who knew? Barney Stinson was right all along!
Pasimpable!
Awesome talk, great to see some kids in the audience for once - personally I think we need to bring back some old words rather than new ones but I'm all for a bit of creativity in language
My own word:
Strorik
Meaning:
noun=school
Verb=work
I need more awesome words in my life
Funny! This was really enjoyable to watch.
thank you for this greawesomet talk :)
At the end of this I was like "no, don't make any words, unless you have a damn good reason for that word to be a word."
Groofie = Group + Selfie
Selfie = Self + (Image -- Mag)
My Concept-
Math:
Algebra + Calculus = Algebracalculus
Algebracalculus > Alcalgeblus
- mixtures of Algebra and Calculus like Differential Equation
Chemistry:
Carbon Dioxide > Carxibon
Others:
Video + Music = Vimeo - A video with music
Go + Home = Gome ex. I'm goming or I'm going home.
Same or Similar + Like or Favorite = Sime ex. It's our sime.
Instead of :
I want your >>> I wanyo
It is a simple thing >>> Itsa simting.
...
....
....
Like the word 'bae' I've started to see floating around. It's just short for 'babe'.
It's short for "before anyone else"
It actually means before anyone else
Oh my fucking god guys. Its already been cleared up
I would like to have two words for atheists, one that refers to people who reject the idea of gods and one that are refering to people who even though they worship no gods have also no position regarding if there are gods or not (it seems like some people use agnostic for the later, but that seems also to be not precise enough). Maybe also a word that describes people who identify with no given view would be nice too.
***** Thanks, I guess Apatheism is the word I was looking for that I missed!
Hey druden. Long time, no see XD
anyway i jist want you to be clear on 1 thing. Atheism and agnosticism are not relatively comparable. Atheism refers to your beliefs (lack of) and agnosticism refers to your knowledge as in you know there is no god/s
simply put: you can be an agnostic athiest, nostic atheist, agnostic theist, or nostic theist ect ect. But you can not be agnostic without being theist or atheist.
(Also agnostic doesnt outright mean you know there is not god. It can also mean knowing there is no way to know god, but agnostic does not mean "ignorance "
duke9891 Thanks, but I am well aware of all this, read my original post again and you might see that I am not saying anything about the definitio of those words, but rather that some people sue them to descripe something for which they don't have a word. But luckily I got a useful word now that I can use in the future to make it better clear that am neither a theist nor an atheist.
Oh, no problem. I was more or less correcting tye 1st response you got from antoine. Words XD
Yes etymological you are correct, nut in your original reply you said "litterally means" which can be assumed to be a definition. The English definition is not equal to any etymology in most cases.

where do you send the words to her ?
Glimp: Verb. To pour scorn and disdain upon something, not because it's a bad thing, but because you're a negative person and want others to be as hateful as you.
"Oh my God! Her dress is so ugly! Why would she even leave the house wearing that!?"
"It's not ugly. Quit glimping."
That's a useful word! where did you get that word from?
I just made it up, just like she told me to. :-D
Somewhat similar to the words: Vitriol(ic)
OsyenVyeter Stop glimping.
OsyenVyeter It has to start somewhere. It has to start sometime. What better place than here. What better time than now?
So how can I send her new words?
Hello every1
hello
hi, sup?
Every1 is a word

So ,is Stonk a word?
That's time to create new dictionary with new words!
"Baon" from Filipino means "food or money for travel, school, and work."
It's nice to encourage people to create words, but not every created new word is equally good. With some experience in creating words, one starts to discern what words are more in use and what are likely to be unintelligible. For instance, those two words, that Erin have generated @ 5:59 like absquatulate was really puzzling for some audience as you can see by their look on faces just as this word was puzzling to me as a non-native English speaker. So, in order for new words to be intelligible, they need to be placed in a specific context, for meaning to become discovered.
send them to her so she "steals" your words!
I wonder what is the next thing to be changed/corrupted?
Slam!
what about "pyrocute" for when someone burns to death
Simplicated. Tell your friends.
Like her
great
New words will they grow the english language?
Cool....I m gonna start making words...
У русских хорошо! Мы можем на ходу придумать любое раннее неизвестное слово, сказать и в зависимости от контекста нас поймут!
Fuelter (fuel filter)
The pre dessert electrocution of Violicious Sandwitches.
Toaster terminated, too.
ADD "ALOT" PLEASE!!
Word of the Day: Mugwump - (n) a person who remains aloof or independent, especially from party politics.
u can say halag for the times u dont know what to say so its just mean awkward silence
Is an infinite dictionary really a good idea? People struggle with the million words we already have. You can either expand your vocabulary by studying, or add redundancy by making new (often unnecessary) words.
There are no disadvantages to an infinite dictionary. We might have an insane amount of words, but there's a defined set that most people use and understand overall. Unnecessary words naturally fall into disuse and the "set" purges itself over time.
This talk is nice and entertaining but I doubt there's reason to worry about the language getting stagnated. New words are being created as we speak, there's no stopping this kind of evolution.
time to join the glorious evolution...
So...does this mean that we are going to make, "fetch" a thing now?
Nice
That was macarrony!
Is it that Jimmy O Yang in the audience?
good
Making words plural is like a law of nature, like gravity? lol.
...I want to live in a world where "Don't forget to obey the law of gravity" is practical advice, in a "don't jump off cliffs" sort of way. And make new words! Don't re-purpose old words! Now THAT leads to confusion.
I use verbing all the time because I can't grammar.
I have created a word "wad" means to move the word much.
Swag-tastic
Obzocky:~lopsided or out of place;Weird. "That looks obzocky"
actually the plural of wug is wug; it's like fish or deer
Hunstred.
Feeling down.
What does it mean by "gubblecote"? Why did everyone laugh when she mentioned it?
fo shizzle ma nizzle
If you are a tracuer you will know that "obey the gravity rule" is something some people actually hear.
How might I be interested participating in such?
whats up classs ?????
Ergel: (Croatian) Extremely Confusing. Eregeling,Ergeled.
I made the word distgustilicious
good
아따 영어잘하네
Ahhhh! followed by bang bang on the key board. What is the word? The cyber black hole gobbling up a day's work with no remorse leaving a feeling of utter mental victim. Cybermunging
Nomsayin?
New art and music etc. is not the same as new words. New words create confusion and divide communities.
Also, "new words get people to focus on what you're saying." This does not mean that they will focus on your message.
All things human is transient.
