- Special Forces historian Bud Gibson joins the MMH Podcast to prove how MACV-SOG directly led to the creation of Delta Force. In Part 1, we discuss Col. Charlie Beckwith and Major Richard J. Meadows who were both founding figures of Delta who had served with SOG in Vietnam.
22:08 Note: "Project DELTA was specifically trained to perform special operations. It's missions encompassed location of enemy units, intelligence acquisition, bomb damage assessment, artillery/air strike coordination, hunter-killer missions, special purpose raids and conducting harassing and deception missions. In June 1966, these reconnaissance teams were employed in VC controlled areas where there were no major friendly actions in process which might compromise DELTA's presence. These US-Vietnamese teams varied between six and ten men and worked an area for long periods-generally thirty days. The pattern of operation consisted of infiltrating teams, normally by helicopter, at dusk or after dark into Viet Cong controlled areas without benefit of ground support. At first these teams were limited to reconnaissance and were withdrawn if discovered. This policy soon changed and the mission of the recon team was expanded to attack "targets of opportunity".
May 15, 1964, Project Leaping Lena was initiated with the mission of conducting reconnaissance operations in Vietnam and Laos. Under Project Leaping Lena, Special Forces "A° detachments trained Vietnamese Special Forces and CIDG troops in techniques of long-range reconnaissance patrolling. In June, 1964, Project Leaping Lena was terminated and Project DELTA, Detachment B-52 of the 5th Special Forces Group-took over their mission. Under the original concept, there were no US Special Forces on Recon teams. But this concept proved unacceptable due to old non-aggressive customs and bad operational procedures adopted by the Vietnamese recon teams. Project DELTA (B-52) was organized in December 1964." - Bud Gibson

There is nobody I love hearing about more than Dick Meadows. Great podcast, Bud is incredibly knowledgeable and very dedicated to this history. Awesome work guys
Great history lesson for all. Thank You Sir
Thank you for listening/watching this early! This has been my life the past 5-6 years and these warriors deserve their spot in history and our thankfulness for the sacrifices made
Epic
Andy is an amazing guy and I’m so glad we got to start working together. I hope I can help him out and get y’all some solid SOG stories and info that isn’t shared in all the books and some don’t even pop up on SOGCAST…
Here are some facts, that might help...
The first 'ever' 2x Americans post WW2 that did an exchange trip with the British SAS were an Officer, Bud Sydnor & NCO Dick Meadows in 1960. Dick Meadows married the British SAS, RSM's daughter, Pamela (Read the 2 books written about Dick Meadows, the best and most accurate being by the author Alan Hoe, 'The Quiet Professional'). Point being, Beckwith, as stated on this Podcast wrongly, was not the first American on exchange with 22SAS.
It was alluded in this podcast about Beckwith firing & hiring within days. The unfortunate reality is that Beckwith was an Alcoholic (Known by all, overlooked by many, often missed-out in conversations when talking about Beckwith) and is the main reasoning why he couldn't remember firing guys, as alluded to in this podcast. It is one of the key reasons arguably Dick Meadows and Beckwith never got-on, because of Beckwith often being drunk. Beckwith & Meadows managed a professional acceptance when forced to work together, as directed by the higher ranking US Military Officers/Command when formal permission was granted, for the creation of 'Delta'. Dick Meadows, was assigned the task to set-up & run the first ever selection(s) of individuals & subsequent training.
In Meadows own words, 'Delta comes from two distinct foundations, 22SAS and the Son Tay Raid. It just happened Dick Meadows was involved with both. Maybe, it is why there is a 8ft statue to Dick Meadows on Fort Bragg, yet no such memorisation of Beckwith? That in itself maybe tells a tale and unfortunately all of Beckwith's good and legacy of founding father of Delta, was blighted by alcoholism at the time and later-on in life.
This was awesome !
Good history discussion. I like how Bud omitted budget compensation. Steal.
Lol ya gotta be able to acquire! After all you guys were known as acquisition specialist
Thanks for watching! This was rough around the edges Don my part this was my 1st time on camera so I’m crazy nervous in this one! The new one will be streamline and a AWESOME SUBJECT!!!!
@@budgibson185 Rough around the edges is actually a good thing. Sometimes things are too polished and don't feel legit.
@@CandC68 Bud is too hard on himself. He prepared PAGES of notes, spent hours working on this project. He is a great guy and a pleasure to work with. I can't wait to stay in touch with him and keep honoring these men.
@@CandC68 thank you sir! I’m just trying to do y’all right SOF,SF, Force Recon and even the grunts!! God bless
My dad was one of only a handful of SF members who served in MACVSOG & Det-A Berlin/Bad Tolz. IMHO Delta was formed more from Det-A the SOG🤷♂️
Bud knows me.
Delta became a concept and did missions as project delta during Vietnam
