While this makes for an interesting plot device, Musashi never crossed swords with Yagu Munenori. They were in fact friends that had the greatest respect for each other. In the Yoshikawa books, Munenori was one of three high ranking Samurai that put Musashi's name forward to the Shogun, Tokugowa Ieyesu, to be his personal sword teacher. Munenori was the eldest son of Lord Yagu Sekishusai, one of the highest ranking lords in all Japan. A Lord that Musashi wished to meet badly but never did and a man that Musashi was in awe of. There are soooo many bouts Musashi has in this TV Series that never took place historically.

i Have heard that Musashi did figth against Munenori.... a duel with bokken to test abilities... ( not a real duel with real swords)
but, the results of the duel was not wrote... to respect the one who lost.
so, we don't know who win the duel

I remember Musashi meeting Muneyoshi in the Vagabond series. Musashi tried to attack him in his sleep but he caught ever move he made and did it with a back scratcher. It was a great demonstration of his "Onimusha Power" as an old man.

It's just for the Kabuki consumption,Musashi never meet Munemori on really duel.He never get a chance to fight Munemori caused the position of Munemori as a Shogun's instructor, and politician at the moment block off his aim point.

This is the new Musashi. When Mifune played the role he was a tough, impetuous, hot head who gradually learned, matured and calmed down. This guy is the new style. He's a steamy and brooding fave - like a boy band lead singer. He's better looking and better dressed. He reminds me of Fabian - a pop culture fabrication.
In any case CZcams is not the correct place for Samurai fil viewing. There are two basic types of Samurai film - the cheap chop-em-up with lots of action most of it fantastic. See Zatoichi. The second type of Samurai movie is very different . The classic serious Samurai movie moves very slowly. There is a lot of talk usually about obligations, duties, and honor. The hero-protagonist is torn by some decision he must make. He struggles with a dilemma. This goes on for most of the movie until the last few minutes in which the hero explodes in violence.
This kind of film is serious and makes a lot of sense when you consider the real Japanese. In America the East Asians commit almost no crimes. There are plenty of murders in America but almost none of them are caused by Japanese. So the casual profligacy of violence in the cheaper sort of Samurai film is just fantasy.
On CZcams they take the final few moments of a Samurai film where all the action is and show only that part. In a serious Japanese film that's just the punctuation.

    • @johnlloyddy7016
      @johnlloyddy7016 Před 3 lety +5

Yup, I agree, it never happened. For one thing Yagyu was already very old when they met, and secondly, he was officially the Shogun's sword instructor, which meant he could not take part in any formal duel without the Shogun's order or consent. Musashi was also still a ronin and therefore considered not worthy enough to formally challenge Yagyu as he was the Shogun's representative. In Eiji Yoshikawa's novelized account, they never fought physically, but instead, when Musashi visited the Yagyu residence upon Takuan Soho's invitation, Munenori decided to test Musashi's skill and experience by lying in wait behind the front doorway to try and surprise him, when Musashi, sensing danger behind the door decided to go around the house and enter thru a side entrance instead, he basically nullified Yagyu's ambush attemp by flanking him. After which, Munenori acknowledged Musashi's martial skills and considered it as if they had actually crossed swords and he got outmaneuvered and defeated.

      Thank you for your comment.
      The answer is very simple.
As you see, Munenori is blocking Musashi 's sword.
      In that situation, Munenori felt.
It is because he felt he could not beat Musashi by his ability.
In other words, Musashi has a much stronger mental power.
I want you to see Musashi's spirit in the duel.

Because he had Mushashi's blood on his blade he considered it the end of the duel according to skills, and a proof that he won.A continue to the duel and a needless killing would have nothing to proove.Anyway it is a fictional dual as they never dueled each other. The Mushashi vs Kojiro was that duel more or less, because Kojiro cut Mushashi's head band but Mushashi proceeded not to hold himself and mortally wound Kojiro on the head with his oar.

He is most certainly not a fictional character but Yagyu would almost certainly have beaten him. Munenori was 13 years older, at the time of Sekigahara in 1600 Musashi was 16 years old. It is said Musashi was at the battle though no definitive record confirms this. Yagyu was there as advisor to the future shogun so if we imagine that they had fought a duel around this time my money would be on the 29 year old Tokugawa sword master rather than the 16 year old upstart..
