What a waste to kill Kojiro. These two great men could have live both as friends and not enemies. Kojiro was the better swordsman, but Musashi won because he broke some rules to win this fight.
They both revered each other but only one can be the best . It was such a brutal time these two lived in. Musashi even said himself Kojiro was his most strongest opponent and regrets killing him. At that time if someone wanted to duel you it was a compliment beyond comprehension .
The amount of mental processing that happened in their showdown and the decisive final action that lead to Musashi's win, this was a very amazing encounter complete with human mortality as the competition's final conclusion.
Musashi lived a great life and successfully completed his quest to become the greatest swordsman who ever lived. I fail to see how his life was a waste. How many of us attain perfection in our quests?

You can also listen to it on audible its read by Brian Nishi who is an great voice actor. Also if you listen, you can learn how to say the actual names aswell haha.
Reading that manga Vagabond makes this scene feel a bit melancholy. Since that version of Kojiro can't talk, a sincere conversation like this one is unlikely to happen.
Right! The actual story was that Musashi jumped off the boat, ran straight at Sasaki Kojiro and literally beat down that sword with his hand carved oar--Sasaki's skull crushed--Musashi jumped straight back on the boat and left, without a word. Musashi never fought another duel.
