  • The 42nd NHK Taiga Drama is MUSASHI. Many Japanese history buffs are familiar with The Book of Five Rings written by Miyamoto Musashi in the 17th century. Musashi's treatise on strategy and the way to lead instantly became the business executive's bible when the translated version hit the bookstores more than three hundred years later.
    In 2003, the story of this legendary swordsman-philosopher-painter comes to life in the NHK Taiga Drama MUSASHI. Based on the famous biography written by Yoshikawa Eiji, this taiga drama boasts a list of stars that reads like a Who's Who of screen and television.
    Orphaned before he was ten years old, Musashi (his real name is Takezo, so you'll hear his childhood friends call him by that name) grows up skilled in the martial arts. During the Battle of Sekigahara, he fights on the side of the losing Toyotomi forces, but eludes the enemy as they hunt down the vanquished soldiers. He then spends years wandering the countryside mastering the sword, becoming a stronger samurai. As his fame spreads throughout the nation, men seek him out to test their skills against him--most notably Sasaki Kojiro who faces Musashi in the ultimate Duel at Ganryujima.

    What a good remake of the old Samurai movie with Toshiro Mifune.
    Musashi already knew he could beat Kojiro before the duel. He used tactics and skill to defeat him. In the end Musashi cried probably because an excellent swordman died. But he had to fight him because it was officially mandated.
    I am so grateful to know a good part of the story of Shimmen Takezo/Miyamoto Musashi. During my training under my Sifu: he made me read the novel by Eiji Yoshikawa. What I also admired in the book was the Love story between Otsu and Musashi. What a great devotion of Love from a Woman!

      From what I'm to understand, Sasaki Kojiro's sword, a nodachi named The Drying Pole, or 物干し竿, was significantly longer than katanas typically wielded at that time. Musashi is described to wield and makes mention in The Book of Five Rings wielding tachis single handed--a sword a bit longer than a katana. There are claims that Musashi was 6' tall and because of his stature, used his reach and the length of his tachi plus a second sword to defeat his smaller opponents. From what I'm to understand, The Drying Pole of Sasaki Kojiro, and his famous technique, the Turning Swallow Cut or Tsubame Gaeshi (燕返し), struck from a great distance and was difficult to counter or defend with a typical katana or even a slightly longer tachi. So, from what I'm to understand, Musashi used the oar because it was longer than The Drying Pole, and it's because of this, when both men struck simultaneously, Kojiro's slash cut Musashi's headband, but Musashi's strike landed.

    • @maskedfishing7168
      @maskedfishing7168 Před 4 lety +15

      He beat him before it started. He purposely showed up late to the duel and unkempt to enrage and throw off his focus. He disgraced him by fighting him with a oar, this was a great disrespect. He used the sun to blind him and give musashi the upper hand. There is another story of a duel (can’t remember the samurai) but they dueled in a graveyard. One samurai got there early and dug the grave of his opponent. So when the other samurai showed up he was mentally defeated by seeing his grave already dug for him. Chess not checkers!!!!

    • @jasonuerkvitz3756
      @jasonuerkvitz3756 Před 4 lety +15

      @@maskedfishing7168 Yeah, the rumor to the legend states he showed up late to match the tide so he could readily escape Ganryu's seconds--men who certainly wouldn't hesitate killing Musashi--if he were to survive. In Musashi's many duels he would show up before or after the proposed time of the agreed duel, sometimes showing up exactly on time. All psychological warfare to gain whatever edge possible--especially considering these men are all intending to butcher one another, ANY edge you can gain could be the difference between life and death.
      The late hour matching the sunset is told of in some accounts of this duel, and that matches some of the strategies from the Book of Five Rings. Musashi writes, "If you do not know the spirit of your opponent, move his shadow." In other words, if motherfucker is a killer and likely to beat you, get the sun in his eyes. In Toshiro Mifune's performance in the Samurai Trilogy based from Eiji Yoshikawa's novelization of Musashi's life, Musashi does exactly this. He gets the sun to his back, effectively moving Kojiro's shadow and blinding him, only for Kojiro to reflect the sunlight back into Musashi's eyes with his sword.
      As for the oar, I maintain that it was the reach of this weapon that bore the initial intent for its use. There is rumor of Musashi dueling a man who founded the Jo Jutsu system, now Jo-do. This practitioner is the only man to defeat Musashi in a duel and it's because he used a longer weapon. The experience enlightened Musashi and gave him the necessary strategy to defeat Ganryu, Sasaki Kojiro, a duelist Musashi understood was perhaps a better swordsman.
      As you state, Chess rather than checkers, and indeed, here is the heart of it all. Though Kojiro is a better swordsman, he's not a better strategist and tactician. So, showing up late, hungover and disheveled swinging an oar was probably extremely insulting and aggravating to the traditions the higher ranked Sasaki Kojiro expected to be treated with. Like the Spartans of Greece, each warrior of Japan was expected to always keep themselves impeccably groomed because they expected death each day. It was considered rude to die and be gross and dirty for those left to tend to your remains. (See Daidoji Yuzan's Budoshoshinshu) So yes, showing up in this way was certainly disarming and an excellent strategy for surviving a fight that could have easily led to both men's deaths.
      I certainly appreciate your points. But I think Musashi knew full well his mortality was at stake. He was human after all, and no matter how much we can look back and immortalize the guy in legend, he was faced with an opponent that was by all means just as good at murdering people and had done so for several more years than Musashi since at the time of his death, Kojiro was 10 or so years older. Truly, the island could have been named Miyamoto Musashi, rather than Ganryu island, depending who died that day. Dick swagger can be a psychological edge, and both men probably crushed down all of their self-doubt and fear, but they both new they were about to die so I can't totally agree that Musashi beat Kojiro before it started.

      @@Akkarsollum yes, Musashi used a wooden sword and also would show up hours late for duels, both these acts made his opponents hopping up and down mad, and they went right to the attack, which was exactly what Musashi wanted as now they weren't thinking strategy, only in killing him. Musashi best his opponents with his mind as well as his weapon, in fact his opponent's mind was where his weapon suited him best, he was a master of psychological warfare.

      De onde que tu vai falar de certeza que Musashi era inferior ao Kojiro? Musashi usou um pedaço de madeira pra luta, significando que ele sabia que somente venceria se acertasse um golpe bem forte na cabeça do Kojiro ou se desarma-se ele. se ele tivesse utilizado uma espada, ficaria a impressão que ele teve insegurança quanto a enfrentar o Kojiro, ja que ele era famoso por ter parado de utilizar a espada, que somente porretes (ou espeto de churrasco, haha) era suficiente para vencer os duelos.
