There’s a large militia and sort-of militant prepper scene on Instagram where people throw around different terms like mutual assistance group (MAG), minuteman group, and militia. People tend to not like to use the word “militia” because of the negative connotations, but I think your term “armed patronage network” is perfect and should introduced into the discourse there.

the fictional U.S. in the book reminds me vaguely of a collapsing society in the first Mad Max movie, before the franchise was turned into a post atomic horror world.

That quote makes war on poverty, drugs, terrorism, cuture... more understandable.
