The history of the church is not being rewritten with false information. The church was the one spreading misinformation, but they got caught. Go read your gospel topics essays, sanctioned by the church. Like the Book of Abraham one, where it flat out admits that the papyri did not contain the translation Joseph claimed it did. Or, go look at the Joseph Smith papers and realize that Joseph was arrested for being a disorderly person (His money digging practices were illegal.) and notice that he received some form of guilty verdict. Go read the multiple versions of the first vision, where God may or may not have been there, and gave different conflicting messages. The difference between now and back then is the access to the information, which allows people to be better informed on the matters of the church, including when the church is lying.

I think the LDS church is an amazing church to study. It is unique to American in origins. The history is very rich. Mormons have an important part in Utah history and its quest for statehood.
I do not like critics who call The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) a cult. It does not even fit the criteria for a cult. It is however a high demand religion. It is a Christian church.
The leadership is also great. I enjoy reading General Conference talks for their insight into such issues like faith, covenants, eternal progression, etc.
The critics are misplacing their anger on the culture of the church with focusing that anger on the actual church.
As for Rough Stone Rolling, it is written by a church member. I liked it because it shows Joseph Smith in his human element. I know bishops who recommend the book to members. Deseret Books still sells the book.

In a first vision account in the BoM+, JSJ claimed to have seen TWO "Gods"... By choosing to believe the BoM+, you choose to believe the BIBLE gives false witness... gives it over and over...
The "Jesus" from the BoM+ (D&C132:24) threatens to DESTROY those who won't submit to polygamy (D&C132:54&64)... The Jesus from the BIBLE, assures He didn't come to destroy ppl's lives, but to SAVE them (Luke9:56)...
By choosing to believe the BoM+, you've chosen to believe you need a prophet, and can't trust what you read for yourself in the BIBLE... Malachi3:6 of the Bible says, "For I am the LORD, I do not change, therefore you are not consumed, O sons of Jacob." Hebrews13:8, emphasizes that same point, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever.” IOW, why have a prophet when you can go to your Bible, and read from it yourself the answer to the question: What would Jesus do?
Impossible to claim belief in both books: the Bible and BoM+... especially with JSJ's account of the first vision. The books give different/irreconcilable messages.
You're convinced that "you know what you know" and are no longer open to instruction/guidance from a source that would tell you otherwise... I'm sure the Bible keeps knocking, but you won't open the door to parts that disagree with what you've decided you know better than...
