  • I play a Magic the Gathering Online Modern league with Jund Asmo Willow Geist Insidious Roots, a deck from Patreon subscriber Barrett. This deck uses the powerful Underworld Cookbook plus Ovalchase Daredevil Food creation engine to get "leaves the graveyard" triggers that fuel value permanents like Willow Geist and Insidious Roots. Wrenn and Six is another value engine that triggers Willow Geist. The goal is to have an ever-growing one-drop your opponent has to worry about while you're doing other stuff. Hungry roots! MTG

    Unfortunate play pattern mistake at 7:50, coming from an asmo vet. If you know you’re vs amulet and you have a cookbook in your hand, you need to start ditching cards turn 1. If you did, you’d have asmo with two foods turn 2 and you could have had interaction.

    • @jamwarrior611
      @jamwarrior611 Před 20 dny +4

      you don't need to activate cookbook turn 1, you have access to two cookbook activations on turn 2 from asmo

      @@jamwarrior611came here to say this. Two cookbooks was the safer play, and would’ve been correct. Sometimes you go for high upside and just die lmao

    As a living end player. Your mistake was attacking with voidwalker.
    If you sac voidwalker in response to LE, then the timing of resolutions means that living end will get exiled by the returned voidwalker. Then you just untap, sac voidwalker to cast LE, and their creatures go back to their grave.

    This deck would be incredible in 2017.

    In the Living End matchup, Voidwalker can recast living end if you sacrifice it and bring it back. I’ve found that’s usually the play pattern you want instead of getting in for 3X damage.

      Wouldn’t have worked in game 2 because of the Leyline of the Void
      Edit: I should have waited for game 3, you’re right

    I think I'd end up cutting red in order to run CatOven and Urza's Saga. Saga is always a threat/win-con and CatOven is just another way to get the synergy going (And stabilizing you somewhat)
    Or another option is running Troll of Khazad-dum (To hit land drops as well as discard for Asmo) and Mausoleum Secrets (As it's a way to search out combo piece, or at the very least can get Asmo in the face of gravehate)

    If you had played turn 2 asmo in m1g2 you actually would have been able to stop the prime time, since it tutors a 2nd cookbook which can make the 2nd food

    In spoiler season I though Insidious Roots would be insane in Yawgmoth, but I guess it's just win-more.

    I feel like this deck really needs a dredge creature; they can recur without any artifacts, and they can dig for more daredevils. I was going to suggest one in the place of Seed of Hope, but I guess there's room if the Willow Geists get cut, too.

    Asmo Willow Geist Insidious Roots, I love a deck word soup

  • @dessydragon
    @dessydragon Před 20 dny +2

    I have been extremely interested in running Finale of Devastation and potentially Break Out as Asmo hits (and Break Out finds Daredevil)
    In a low to the ground version, Inti also has some pretty sweet synergy.
    As far as choice of 1-drops go, Willow Geist is interesting, but i think Stalactite Stalker and Teething Wurmlet are easier to enable.

    Splash blue and run psychic frog from mh3 (or psychatog in legacy). I know it wasn’t an option in this video but would be an interesting list in the future. Maybe run the new black goyf as well

    I play food in azban shell. Using cauldron familiar, and having the samwise combo. Gives easy drain and sac outlets as well, and with the cat it triggers roots pretty easily.

    I think that the state of modern is REALLY sad, 7 years ago I brewed a mono black vampires by myself, and actually could play with it, now a days there's no space for such a thing.

  • @dessydragon

    Love this deck and engine!
    i do think there are some similar aggro/tempo and combo variants that probably have more game than the grindy versions (tho i love those and wish they were more viable in Modern right now)

    Is there a Roots deck strong enough for Legacy? It’s my favorite card in recent memory, so I’d love to port it if possible.

    • @Marksmaan
      @Marksmaan Před 20 dny +2

      I doubt it honestly. The deck that wants this won't ever have 2 mana. That being Vengevine, Hogaak, Rootwalla stuff. It's good in Pioneer and I have a standard list If you want to give it a go. But the only way I see it being good in Legacy is if it's a 1 or 2 of in the new Nadu decks. Since Nadu is a new engine that can compete with Ring and Beans that scales off going wide, it could work. Sultai would work nicely with Nadu and it's not hard to trigger Roots.

    Would a 1 of dryad arbor have merit as something to discard and then pick up with Wrenn, while still triggering insidious roots?

    • @Marksmaan
      @Marksmaan Před 20 dny

      If you did, it's probably have to come at the cost of a spell. Not saying its not worth, just point out that it couldn't really count as a land in deck building.

  • @Marksmaan
    @Marksmaan Před 20 dny +1

    Roots is my pet card. What I've found is its better in a control shell. You don't play it on turn 2. You play it after you've stabilized. There's no way to stabilize in this deck really. You need to let it passively build up a board as you play a control game. I love the Soul Cauldron Grist idea where you have like 6 plants all being Grists lol. I love Asmo too, but I think it's too cute.
