  • My first ever pastrami sandwich in New York. Trying this pastrami sandwich for the first time was an experience. One of the best sandwiches I have ever had. Cured beef sandwich - brisket cured pastrami at Brooklyn Deli. #pastrami #firstever #newyork #myfirsttime

    The sandwich looked pretty good, 9 out of 10. The price is typical Mid-Town Manhattan. The important thing here is that you enjoyed it, that's what counts.

    There’s loads of info out there as to the best Pastrami delis in New York. You maybe should have gone to one of Katz’s, Frankel’s, Sarge’s, Second Avenue deli, Mendy’s - the list goes on. Mind you, the sandwich you had looked pretty decent, albeit a bit small maybe for the price?

    Pastrami is made from beef brisket that has been cured, coated in spices, cold smoked and then steamed. Pastrami's thick coat of spices typically includes crushed black pepper, coriander, mustard seeds, garlic and other spices that might be included in a pickling spice mixture. Pastrami has a rich, savory, salty flavor flecked with spice and smoke. It has a touch of tang, thanks to the mustard seed in the spice rub. It's a little fatty and peppery, too.

    • @Eric_G65
      @Eric_G65 Před 23 dny

      Authentic Pastrami that is made at the classic New York Jewish Deli's are made from plate not brisket. It's a much fattier cut than brisket.

    • @WaferBrik
      @WaferBrik Před 23 dny

      @@Eric_G65 I believe pastrami originated in Romania and was mainly made from mutton or lamb but that American Jews introduced the use of beef, which was a more accessible meat.

    • @LittleBearBBQ_Food_Original

      100% Correct!
      Personally, I make mine with a Brisket Flat and a Pickling Spice that I have removed the majority of Chillies from.
      Blitz the Pickling Spice to a powder and mix with Garlic Powder and the (measured) Salt & Curing Salt.
      Dry cure and then cold smoke, rest, hot smoke to safe temp. rest and thinly slice.

    • @Eric_G65
      @Eric_G65 Před 22 dny

      @@WaferBrikPastrami predates the Romanian's version. It was first cooked during the Ottoman Empire. Romanian Pastrami, before it came to the US, was made from Goose. The Jewish Immigrants that adapted it for the United States made it from beef because Goose was prohibitively expensive and also not easily accessible in quantity. They used the Plate cut, which is a very fatty belly cut of beef because like Goose, it was a very fatty meat that could stand up to the lengthy prep required to make Pastrami and still remain moist and tender. Those same Jewish immigrants introduced bbq's brisket, most notably to Texas and introduced Corned Beef to Irish immigrants that lived among the Jewish immigrants. Corned Beef and cabbage came from the Jewish neighborhoods in NYC. The Irish that immigrated to the US never ate Beef in their native Ireland because it was too expensive. They ate pork products instead.

    • @andyhow3431
      @andyhow3431 Před 18 dny +1

      You’re wrong about the Irish never eating beef. There was a Cattle act of 1663 that meant Ireland got beef from Britain for very cheap with low tax. Their corned beef was the best on the market and they then started supplying other countries. That came to an end and then yes, beef became for the rich in Ireland. The corned beef the Jewish community introduced was 100’s of years later and their own version 👍

  • @LittleBearBBQ_Food_Original

    'strami and/or Salt Beef definitely benefits from some Wallys & Mustard.
    Now, that has me recalling the Salt Beef, Mustard & Pickle Beigel I had from The Beigel Shop in Brick Lane...That was a thing of beauty!!!

    The whole idea of why a New York half sour pickle is served with a pastrami sandwich, is to cut the taste of the fat. Much like the idea of the English combo of roast beef with horseradish.

    Mustard in North America/Canada is not like Colmans in the U.K. As you stated its much milder. Pickles are in a vinegar/dill mix which gives them a distinctive taste. The steak you get with steak and eggs is usually a low quality steak. The "thing" here in Canada is Montreal smoked meat on a sandwich.

    Darren John I was going to post a list of other delis where I know the pastrami to be good.
    At least you didn't go to Katz's. Nothing wrong with the food there, but it's soooo expensive and people queue on the sidewalk.
    This Brooklyn Deli - not in Brooklyn - must be new, or at least post-pandemic, since I don't know it... I do claim expertise.
    Other places in Manhattan with good pastrami (sadly, so many others have closed):
    Sarge's at 36th St & Third Ave.
    Second Ave Deli on 33rd St., West of Third Ave. (with another location on the Upper East Side.)
    Pastrami Queen on West 72nd St., also on the upper East Side.
    If you like I can also post a list of diners in the midtown area that are better than that Brooklyn diner you went to, and much less expensive.

The US used to be so cheap but now its at least double what you'd pay in Australia and things are expensive here. That being said that sandwich did look delish!! I too am not a fan of pickles and they put them on the side of everything. If I was trying to explain what pastrami is like I'd say its like a mix between beef and silverside. Very delicious though. Boy did you go to the wrong Deli. You should have gone to one of the New York Kosher Deli's like Second Avenue Deli for the best Pastrami. In my opinion, it's better than even Katz's. The place you went to is a tourist trap and the food is mediocre at best. That pickle was terrible, I am sure you would have much preferred a half sour pickle that tastes way better than the garbage pickle they served you. You know you can get fairly good Pastrami in the UK. There are several Kosher Deli's in London and the Midlands.

    That sandwich looked good, I thought there could have been more Pastrami though. I had been to Carnegie Deli several times before they closed. Their Woody Allen sandwich was Pastrami & Corn Beef, it was about 4 inches deep. Keep the vlogs coming Darren
