- The end of the 1990s was an odd time for cinema and in general. We were in the midst of Y2K, and fears that It could lead to something of an apocalypse. So, of course, Hollywood ran with it. Technology gone wrong, end of days, Satan coming to Earth, etc. Today we look back at End Of Days!

SERIES SYNOPSIS: Hollywood has had its fair share of historically troubled productions. Whether it was casting changes, actor deaths, fired directors, in-production rewrites, constant delays, budget cuts or studio edits, these films had every intention to be a blockbuster but were beset with unforeseen disasters. Sometimes huge hits, sometimes box office bombs. Either way, we have to ask: WTF Happened To This Horror Movie?

End of Days is a solid film. It absolutely doesn’t deserve the bad rep that it has.
The ending scene is heart touching.
End of Days is one of my favorite Arnold movies. Darker than what he usually does, and the story is pretty cool, while cliched
I agree. I knew all of the references they were stealing from, I mean referencing, but I did enjoy the dark tone, Gabriel Byrne's performance, and the subway scene. The next darkest tone where Arnold wasn't playing a machine is probably the opening to Kindergarten Cop.
Arnie best movie since Terminator.
I fully agree
Its not cliché at all
Best line in the movie.”You’re a f*cking choir boy compared to me!A choir boy!”
Gabriel Bryne was in both Stigmata & End of Days. Played a priest in one & Satan in the other. But wore the same Giorgio Armani black cashmere overcoat in both 😂
I almost posted something very similar to this. It was a wild year for him, and probably the main reason I recognize him to this day.
@@karl_alan He’s the best. Still love Millers Crossing
It always made me feel the movies were connected to each other somehow.
I loved him in devils advocate with Kurt wrestling who was in that movie called constant seen
😢😢😢😅😢😢😮 0:51 😢😢t9r8😮i😢8r😢😢to?6t9😢😮😢I?6t98z😢8 6😢
I remember Arnold Schwarzenegger appearing on Smackdown to promote the movie, Vince giving him a Box Office Championship belt, and Triple H fighting him in the ring.
Yeah those were the days. I had that episode recorded on VHS
My favorite scene in this was the crazy albino on the subway whose head shatters like its ceramic. Great sequence.
This came out amidst some other great dark horror flicks in 1999--Stigmata, Stir of Echoes, House on Haunted Hill, Sleepy Hollow, Sixth sense and Blair Witch Project. It was a great season for horror.
When you were mentioning actresses, you listed Jennifer Connolly, but showed a picture of Phoebe Cates from fast times at Ridgemont high.
It came out. It was amazing. Not many people went to go see it, which is their loss. Was a great pre Y2K film, and it was Arnold vs The Devil himself.
Jennifer Connelly really looks like Phoebe Cates. 😂
I've always really like End of Days... BUT... It was a movie I saw as a kid as one of the first rated R movies I secretly watched on my own on HBO.
A situation like that makes for a pretty nostalgic experience and definitely can make you see things through rose tinted lenses
Gabriel Byrne was very charismatic as the devil in End of Days and as a priest in Stigmata, both of which came out in 1999.
The sex sequence of them melting into each other has been fused into my brain for 25 years.
End of days is a movie that I want to love but about halfway through it I start checking out.
One of Arnold Schwarzenegger's most underrated films.
I enjoyed End Of Days when it came out. Then re-watched it last year, albeit right around New Years, and think it still holds up. Gabriel Byrne did a phenomenal job, and it's a much darker outing for Arnold and Kevin Pollack. Overall, I still think it's criminally underrated.
Still holds up to this day. Amazing film, and the whole Cult concept it's there for all to see
I was pumped beyond belief for this movie when I saw the previews for it that summer. I wouldn't say I was disappointed in it necessarily, but it wasn't what i expected. I expected more action. But it was something different for Arnold and I applaud him trying something a little out of his realm.
I saw this on opening weekend. I enjoyed it and still do. I'm a huge Arnold fan and it was fun to see him back in action and this time against the devil.
I think this is a career highlight for Arnold!! I loved this movie!! Definitely an underrated movie in my opinion
The real best line in the movie " It is amazing what you will agree to when your on fire."
The movie did have some genuinely creepy and disturbing moments in it.
Looking back at this film 24 years later, I think it’s amazing film
Damn. this film is turning 25 in November 😮
@@MrBlueBot5 wow that’s scary .I was 11 at the time.
I saw this at the theater in December of 1999. It was creepy and I thought it was really good. The cast, acting and direction were solid and I immediately bought into the premise. One of my favorite films to this day.
Didn't you guys already do a video on this movie last year? Not complaining at all, was just curious. Either way I love all your videos!
This might be a dumb opinion but when I saw this as a kid, Arnold showed range at the end of the movie, especially during his change to evil. I was used to *Terminator* Arnold being evil, but flat and robotic. This Arnold was a more sinister evil when verbal. It made me afraid almost in a way when my dad would yell at me so loud the walls would shake.
This movie is sorely underrated, and has Arnold’s most underrated line, “YOU’RE A FUCKING CHOIR BOY COMPARED TO ME, A CHOIRBOY!”
Its been over 20 years since i seen this movie. Cant really remember what happened in the movie but I do remember really enjoying the movie and recommending it to others. I thought it was a good movie back then and i still feel the same way about it today. Makes me wanna go and rewatch it.
1999 was a MONSTER year for movies
I watched this in the theater for 1 reason: it had the "new" GNR song on the sountrack🤷🤷
Man, this movie had such a good concept and aesthetic to it. So disappointing that the studio couldn’t get their act together. I love that Arnold did a movie like this. I wanted it to be so good. Makes me sad.
End of Days was a style of the time film, with Seven, The Crow, Lord of Illusions, and In the Mouth of Madness, etc... The main thing of it standing out was basically remaking Rosemary's Baby with Arnold. Not a bad film but not strong enough to be out of that kind of marathon.
I enjoyed this a lot mateys
End of Days is weirdly relevant this week with the discover of the tunnel under the New York synagogue
I thought this film was interesting at least. Gabriel was good as the antagonist and I remember visiting Universal Studios in 99 and there were huge billboards advertising this film. Of course later on what I remember this film most for is that Miriam Margolyes told everyone that Arnold farted in her face.
Korn has a really sick tune on the soundtrack.
It was good film and captured the weirdness of 1999 well. I went and got the soundtrack on cd back then as well which was packed with awesome tunes.
I remember during this period being so disappointed with the movies my childhood action heroes were doing. I knew by that point the party was over (even though it was technically over for nearly a decade lol). I have a fan edit of this flick that makes it a much better movie (albiet, a shorter one but I always say "Quality over quantity").
This is a very cool movie, even today, I like it, yes the special effects are old in some scenes, but apart from that, it is a very enjoyable 90's product and not to mention that in several scenes Arnold shows that he can really act and even intensely, but, if this film becomes a very enjoyable pleasure it is because of Gabriel Byrne as the Devil, he practically steals every scene he appears in.
And to think that in 1999 the world was very different, we were two years before the horrible event of the Twin Towers and 9/11 that would change the world forever, to see the iconic building in several scenes of this film is heartbreaking.
My favorite film score composed by John Debney. The song "Redemption" is amazing.
I loved this movie! I saw it when it came out in theaters in 1999. One of Arnold’s best movies!!!!
Let us not forget this film’s obvious highest achievement.
Scoring Arnold’s place in the WWE Hall of Fame after appearing on a random episode of Smackdown! to advertise this movie.
The soundtrack alone was my jam when I was a newly driving teen.
My first CD was the end of days soundtrack...
End of Days is definitely one of Arnold's most underrated films I'll never forget watching it loved it one of those edge of your seat movies.
One of my favourite end of days the last of the 90s action horror 🎉
I wasn’t really watching Arnold movies around this time, but something about End Of Days…I liked it. I liked everything about it, except the Guns N’ Roses song.
I like the film, it got some good one liners and Gabrirel Burn is just awesome with that cool and calm charisma factor playing the big bad of them all.
Arnold taking on the devil with the machine gun used in the first half life game... sign me the fuck up! I truly enjoy this movie.
I remember seeing this movie and intermediately falling in love with Robin Tunney I really thought she was the most beautiful woman in the world!! 😍
To be honest I've seen it in the cinema...it was ok for me...part horror part action movie...I respect their effort
End of Days is a good action film!
I found it unique and a great idea of Lucifer taking on a cool cop with demons and had good special effects.
The film would’ve been much better if they had Jim Cameron or John McTiernan direct it.
Screenwriter Andrew Marlow went on to create the tv show Castle. As for director Peter Hyams, he was one of this most underrated directors/DOP in Hollywood. Capricorn One, Running Scared, Busting and The Star Chamber are among some of his greatest works. He's the kind of director that makes good solid films. The kind you'd never see win an Oscar, but almost guaranteed to entertain.
This movie was the closest thing to a sequel to terminator 2 and predator. Arnold was at his best. And it was his last good 90s movie. Peter hyams did a fantastic job with the film. Even though it would have been better if Jim Cameron or Sam Raimi directed it because they’ve done films like that.
Rotten Toma-ous !!! Nice
holiday classic
I loved End of Days. I still watch it once or twice a year lol
👍👍👍🎥
I mean…the movie is called End of Days. I expect it to be filmed in a dark setting.
It was better than most sci-fi movies….. I enjoyed it
Jericho sacrificed himself to defeat Satan, save the world and Christine York, and to prevent another Anti Christ from being born.
the scene in New York with the albino and the twin towers was really spooky and foreboding
This movie is a guilty pleasure for me despite its flaws, I enjoy the performances, twists, and both action and horror sequences. It's a shame that it wasn't a bigger hit at the time, but it probably should've been released around Halloween or Christmas rather than Thanksgiving in the USA. Plus Hyams clearly made a big mistake of "under-lighting" the movie.
2:11 The "Nispel Manifesto" were not demands Marcus Nispel had made in order for him to work on the movie, but were the "instructions" people were to follow in order to work with him on commercials and music videos. Still weird and symptomatic of a huge ego, but he didn't forward those to the movie studio. Also, he didn't "went on to shoot a bunch of music videos instead": he was already a big name in music videos and advertising, that's why the went for him. Get your facts straight - you only have one job.
I really enjoyed End Of Days!
Underrated movie IMO
I saw this in a double feature with Pokemon the first movie in theaters
Can I point out that Strange days was released in 1995. NOT 1999. Its plot is set in 1999.
The big problem with the movie is it tries to take itself seriously. The movie wants to be an Omen type thriller while also being an Arnold action movie the styles don't mesh completely. Overall I have a good time with it the story is silly but when Arnold is blasting Satan worshippers with grenade launchers I was having a good time. As a movie its alright as a time waster but as an Arnold flick of him vs Satan it's a good time.
Love movies about devil worship and then add an actor. I like how could i not love this movie? Sadly, I've never been able to find it on blu ray only on dvd
The story is quite silly and Arnold's terribly miscast as a down-on-his-luck anti-hero. But I always thought there was a good film in there *somewhere*. Didn't help of course the Peter Hyams decided to go even darker with the lighting than he had done in The Relic. I preferred his visual style when he was ripping off Ridley Scott in Outland. Big shout-out to Gabriel Byrne who gave a pretty awesome performance as Satan. Some of his scenes are extremely creepy.
End of Days was a great movie. Dark concept for Arnie, but he did an excellent job. This is a case of, "your not fitting into the box we placed you in..."
Still have my vhs copy of this.
It's not the best Schwarzenegger movie, but it had an interesting cast, some visuals that stuck with me, and was entertaining, which is all I ask.
At 5:42 yeah I wish that Kate Winslet was in this movie End of Days I wouldn’t mind her I love role in Titanic (1997) and she would of done a great job in this movie too but Robin Tunney was good for the role she was decent enough for this character role though
This movie has my 2 favorite genre in one. I like this movie bc it was different than the other Arnold movies besides predator.
Fun movie.
Writing one episode of Viper should be credentials enough to direct any movie of any budget of any genre.
I remember renting this from blockbuster. It was alright. Not great, but not terrible either.
Underrated movie 😊
I enjoy End of Days there I said it
I actually liked this movie a lot at the time i bought it at blockbuster i thought it was as decent comeback for Arnie
i loved this film loved the darker side to it
Back in 1999 I saw this in theater with my dad. I didn't understand the sex scene and he probably didn't either.
Guillermo Del Toro or Sam Raimi would’ve been phenomenal 🔥
I absolutely loved this movie. I feel it didn't get the respect it deserved.
Stigmata, Sleepy Hollow, Idle Hands, Disturbing Behavior, The Matrix And The Sixth Sense Were The Best Movies Of 1999 At The Time.
The only thing I liked this film: the soundtrack itself but not the film
I feel so bad to Peter Hyams and Arnold Schwarzenegger.
I think they should've got a better writer before the bad writer did on Hollow Man. Oh, well,
that's Hollywood for you.
One of Arnold's best movie from one of the best filmmakers he's ever worked with - and the numbskull doesn't even know it.
Peter Hyams is a boss!
I remember being stoked to see Arnold back in action. I was severely bummed when I saw it. I guess I want sure what to expect, but that certainly wasn’t it. It wasn’t scary and the action was meh.
But somehow I find myself rewatching it every now and then…thinking this was actually kinda entertaining…maybe a so bad it was good Arnold movie? 🍿
Is Arnold vs Satan. As a catholic raised, is awesome.
I remember being dissappointed at the movie when it was new. Arnolds performance was really good though. Showing he can be a serious actor too.
But the bad guy (Satan) was an quite annoying character, and the whole movie lacked comic relief, and it was too dark and lacked nice looking envorinments to back that up, also there where too many already for the time bad CGI, especially the last big Satan-monster reveal, which has the same quality as CGI characters in PC games just few years after this movie was released.
End of Days has SOMETHING, but it doesnt equate to a very entertaining movie unfortunally.
I'd give it 2 of 5.
I love this movie
End Of Days Is Great👍🏻& Fun🤩!
1999 being the end of the world. Predated Y2K. Prince. Party Like It's 1999...... I rest my case.
Arnie looks like he has fangs on this video's cover image.
I saw it at cinema. I liked it
Great movie! One of the 90s era hidden gems.
They should have kept the last big satan practical, the CGI version they used hasnt aged well at all.
In fact, it looked quite bad already back then.
Movie was fantastic.
Am I the only one that enjoyed this movie? I thought is was a fun, popcorn movie.
I like End of Days. Not great, but enjoyable. Dont understand why it gets so much hate
