WTF Happened To Hannibal?

- The release of The Silence of the Lambs in 1991 marked a significant cinematic success and won all five major awards at the Oscars. Reflecting on the 90s era versus today's Hollywood landscape, the notion of a sequel being accompanied by an entire cinematic universe under Disney's ownership feels both plausible and unsettling. The anticipation for a sequel was met with the expectation of a follow-up novel, which eventually arrived in 1998, a seven-year gap contrasting sharply with contemporary sequel standards.

SERIES SYNOPSIS: Hollywood has had its fair share of historically troubled productions. Whether it was casting changes, actor deaths, fired directors, in-production rewrites, constant delays, budget cuts or studio edits, these films had every intention to be a blockbuster but were beset with unforeseen disasters. Sometimes huge hits, sometimes box office bombs. Either way, we have to ask: WTF Happened To This Horror Movie?

‘Tell me, Clarice, would you ever say to me “Stop! If you loved me, you’d stop!”?’
-‘Not in a thousand years!’
"That's my girl."
In the book they became lovers
Better love story than Titanic.
missed opportunity to name the Hannibal High show Hannibals Lectures
Masterful!
Fun fact: Mason Verger's mansion in the movie was the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, NC. The same location used in Richie Rich.
Mason Verger and Richie Rich in the same mansion, can't be good.
I love Julianne Moore. I think she's great and I do think she did a good job in the role of Clarice considering the circumstances. But of course it just didn't feel the same. How could it ever? That character is so legendary and well loved. Jodie returning could have potentially made the film so much better. She's the one people think of when they think of Clarice Starling. Enjoyed Hannibal but it's nowhere near as good as Silence of the Lambs.
The thing I remember about this movie. Ray Liotta brain
Same, everytime I look back on this film it's the cook brain scene 🧠
I didn't realise it was Gary Oldman, I'm genuinely blown away with that fact
Love and sub :)
The line "that's entertainment" was actually after a cut that they kept
Gary Oldman is so talented he actually peeled off his face for the part. What a legend 💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽
I would would simply describe this film as a grower. It's a mixed at first, but then it just gets better with each viewing
I am a big Thomas Harris fan, starting when _Black Sunday_ first came out. I can't shake the feeling that _Hannibal_ and _Hannibal Rising_ were written under some kind of duress. He didn't phone them in, but neither had the tension nor believability of his previous books. Both were very over the top.
I thought that, when I heard the line from Jodie Foster : "Harris and I would have never done that to Clarice". Errrmmmm....Have you ever read the book, Jodie ?
The way I understand it, Harris wrote Hannibal Rising when Dino DeLaurentis asked him for a prequel. Harris said no, so Dino said he'd have one written so he could do a movie. Harris slapped Rising together, just so Dino didn't destroy the franchise.
By the time we get to Hannibal, lector has taken over the narrative and become the protagonist. It's now his story, from his point of view moreso than any other character. Hannibal rising, even though it's a prequel, is a continuation of the same. Not so with the other novels
I've always felt like there was meant to be another novel with Will Graham to bring it full circle. Hannibal Rising always felt like it was ghost written to me. Not the same style of writing at all. Felt like some lazy fanfic a teenager would write.
@@TheJohno95 I feel the same on both counts.
"Hannibal Rising," IIRC, was like a bunch of "and then" events, not even close to his usual craft.
This is my favorite Hannibal film. I really loved it a lot. I thought he was more terrifying walking around amongst all the people who didn’t realize what he was capable of. And that was seen when he gutted one of his victims.
the very humble red ragon was mor ein line with silence of the lambs. and the artsy series was a great "elseworld". hannibal was not bad, but way too bombastic
The series was pretentious but very interesting 😉
You have to cut back on the humor. It's too much and not funny.
Sometimes it's ok, but this video felt off.
Yeah this sucks
That scene with the brain cooking was very silly.
Its on the book too
Yes. He used a chaffing dish. He should have used a wok.
That's not what my Tinder dates say.
That scene was awesome!
bwhahaha@@goodoldbubba6620
Book was better
Even with that weird ending
If it did anything, the movie toned down a lot of the batshit crazy stuff from the book, like completely taking out Verger's lesbian body builder sister, who wants him to donate his sperm, so that she and her girlfriend could have a child.
This! I just finished it for the first time last night and while I don't love where it went, the book still made more sense than the movie. Typically, Ridley Scott takes time for character development but in this the entire film felt so rushed we didn't even have time. It was just 2 hours of rushing through the events of the book, ignoring the characters entirely.
I've always loved Hannibal as a sequel. I thought it was so daring at the time, and still do. I'm happy they changed the book ending because that sounds absolutely awful, so it's much better that Starling didn't run off into the sunset with Hannibal. I thought the theatrical ending with the brain eating and such was so not-Hollywood, and greatly respected it. I didn't give it too much thought that Foster chose not to return, the reason didn't matter to me. But had Hopkins not returned, that would have been a show-stopper as he was always the main character to me. Plus, I thought Moore did just fine. Oh, and I find the idea of Lechter walking around ready to gracefully pounce on anyone that threatens him far more unsettling than being in the cage.
Yeah the novel is absolute trash
I have very vivid dreams of my buddy’s dad taking us to see this for his 13th birthday (right down the road from “Mason Verger’s mansion”
I never knew that was Oldman! Awesome!
I always thought it was John Glover, the guy who played Lex Luthor's father in Smallville, clamp in Gremlins 2.
@@shanester1832 Really ? It looks nothing like him
@Victor-rb6pq As though it looks like Oldman. Just looking at general facial structure and the voice he did that's what I thought.
I've known it was Oldman for years.
@@shanester1832 Its cleraly Oldman, speacially the voice.
@Victor-rb6pq A passing impression from 23 years ago was wrong. Oh no. How will I go on?
Not bad a review. Would've loved to have seen even more of the book differences included.
Your description of the character Mason Verger in the movie earned your video a LIKE.
🤣😂Well done!
Okay, the video started off rough with the lame jokes and I almost tuned out. But as soon as Travis described Mason Verger's appearance, I laughed my @$$ off and it got WAY better! 🤣 MORE of that and LESS of the cringe jokes, please!
I think they missed a huge opportunity. If they had followed the book and let Clarice be turned the sequels would have written themselves!! Like Dexter, they could have hunted down and eaten other serial killers or she could have turned on him and left him presumed dead and seeking revenge with a huge showdown finally!!!
I couldn't believe the makeup on Gary Oldman. It was so terrifying.
It's corn pone country 🐈.
I shouldn’t have laughed so hard at that.
12:29 that austin powers line was perfect
From what I heard after the movie of Silence of Lambs was released, Thomas Harris was under pressure to write a follow up to it, but didn't really want to. I wonder if that's why the book Hannibal ended the way it did. Upset that he had to write a follow up he decided to mess with the beloved Clarice Starling character.
I actually love this film, I understand why it gets a bad wrap from those who love TSOTL being so different, but it’s enjoyable if you treat it as it’s own story.
It is and isn´t better than the book. S2 of the TV show also tried its best to make this story work. I mostly succeeded.
Finally, someone mentions Bryan Fuller's Hannibal ❤❤❤
I loved it, and think it’s a very worthy follow-up. I even like the book’s ending, although the best ending is probably the alternative one where Hannibal doesn’t remove his hand.
The scariest part was when Ray Liotta ate the part of his brain where his Goodfellas memories were stored
I absolutely adore this film. It was ny childhood so it's always got a special place in my heart.
Wasn't better then Slience of the lambs but i enjoyed the sequel and Julianna Moore did a great job she wasn't trying to be Jodie Foster she was trying to be the character
I enjoyed a lot of the book Hannibal. I just don't understand why Thomas decided to finish the series the way he did. Maybe he just couldn't be cliche.
I thought maybe he was tired of Hollywood breathing down his neck to finish the novel so he gave them that ending . I was shocked when I saw the movie having read the books first . This was super interesting ! 👍🎥🎞
Ridley Scott brings a much more impactful direction and overall experience as opposed to the first one. The first one has breaks and levity for a more casual viewing experience, but this one wanted you to feel the pure stress and pain Clarice felt, like she was suffocating in unfairness. I love how much more raw and realistic it feels as opposed to the more saccahrine and "alls well that ends well" movie before. It just feels more grounded. You also have to account for the fact that the book this time ended on such a nonsensical, character-ruining moment with the two becoming lovers that they had to come up with a much better ending.
I hate how far they strayed from the book, on this movie. The relationship between Clarice and Hannibal was what made it so interesting and they crapped on it. Also no Jody Foster as Clarice was a huge bummer.
In the book, the wine mentioned was "Amarone", not Chianti! We got robbed of a great commercial opportinuty there.
I like this narrator so much better than the other guy. This guy doesn’t sound like he’s criticizing and making fun of every little thing. The voice is good and I can listen to it the other one I kept turning it off after a little while.
I understand suspension of disbelief, but the ending was simply absurd. He cuts off his own hand - how did he stop the bleeding? How did he get on a plane, through security, with a bloody stump and no ID? How did he pay for a plane ticket. I mean, c'mon?
At 1:10, is that an alternative book cover or a piece of fan art. I’ve never seen it before I’m super intrigued by it. It reminds me of the first edition American psycho cover
Awesome movie
Deserves more respect
The first half and the entire sequence in Italy is absolutely brilliant and top notch thriller, but the second half just falls flat. On the whole an interesting movie, fairly good, but also a missed opportunity for a great movie.
I watched this about a year ago and it was ok. I enjoyed it, but it wasn't amazing or anything. The Dinner scene was maybe the highlight (or at least the main thing I remember). I still have to see Red Dragon with Ed Norton.
His supernatural prowess for chameleonic transformation leads me to the conclusion that Gary Oldman is Clayface. Change my mind.
02:32 Chilean-born Mexican poet/novelist/ne'er do well Roberto Bolaño also reviewed it favorably. He said, "It isn't perfection, but I wish everyone in popular paperback literature was writing this well." Bolaño was a man who cared about what everyone was reading and, though he could be a pretentious snood, he was profoundly interested in the trajectory of modern literacy like King himself.
This was the quintessential guilty pleasure for me as a youth
Great writing Mike Holtz … I always wondered about SO much of this . Super interesting !!! I read all the books before I saw the movies . I had my own ideas about why Mr. Harris gave his book that ending . Was he tired of Hollywood asking him to finish his novel ? I absolutely love his writing ✍️! 🎥🎞✌️
❤❤❤
Right?! His bodybuilding sister kills mason in yhe book!!! In the movie the doofus doctor nobody dumps him in the pigs den.actually the pigs eating mason was actually pretty cool though rite?
Hannibal is glorious. It shouldn't be compared to SOTL stylewise, since it's a completely different type of story. It's Lecter On The Loose, this time it's his game and not a tense manhunt like SOTL or Red Dragon. It's gritty, bloody yet classy, exactly like Lecter himself. I love what we got.
People complained the film was too graphic but it was pretty tame compared to the novel.
“..who looks like Mitch McConnell went 10 rounds with prime Mike Tyson.”
😂😂😂
What’s extra great is you can clown on McConnell and offend literally no one.
Weird, where's the Hannibal tv series mentioned? *sad fannibal noises*
Julieanne Moore is fantastic, she is always great in every role she's had.
I thought it was a good movie
That scene where he feeds Ray Liota his own brain was worth the price of admission
It was kinda overkill to get Gary Oldman to play the deformed billionaire
I feel like they could've put anyone in there and youd get the same effect
😂Hannibal in the classroom 0:42 😂Hannibal High😂
Some of the jokes here land about as well as a dropped carton of eggs.
Watching Silence then this immediately after is just dissapointing
Try watching _any_ of of them after watching "Manhunter." None live up to the original.
Manhunter & Lambs were excellent, Hannibal was ok, Red Dragon was poorly acted without subtlety, and Hannibal Rising was a mess...but the books were freakin awesome! It's been a long time since I watched/read Hannibal but I remember missing Mason's sister's storyline in the movie. She and her partner are a big part of the book and lend some decency to Hannibal's character as you learn that Hannibal the Cannibal isn't the worst sort of humanity out there.
"Corn pone country p____" - Krendler used that term to denigrate and mock Starling's country mannerisms and accent.
I remember the phrase from the book, and was surprised it made it to the movie.
I always thought the movie’s ending was better than the book’s. Clarice submitting to Hannibal & escaping with him across Europe never sounded right to me & I’m glad they changed it
"Manhunter" was awesome. Now I know why Jodie Foster said nah. She was the ONLY "Clarice". Moore is a hack, no replacement for Foster on any level.
How many times can you state "Quote" & "Unquote"
I could do without hearing quote, end quote for a while
For me the SotL is reality viewed through Clarice's POV. Hannibal is reality viewed through Hannibal's POV. Not creepy and dank but glamorous. Clarice saw herself as small and mousy. Hannibal sees her statuesque and classically gorgeous and confident.
I repeat the book is A MASTERCLASS IN TWIST ENDINGS

Clarice was a very different character in Hannibal and I liked it. I t felt like Dr Lecter had moved on to bothering a new agent

IT WAS RIGHT THERE !

Well, if you know the book ending after the Loser Gang's first encounter with "IT", I can see why King was so impressed with this novel 😅
Weird volume stuff going on in this video. Good stuff tho.
I LOVE the HANNIBAL Movie. I think it might have actually aged the best over the years out of the Franchise and I think it stands alone very well. It may not be Classic that SILENCE has become - but as a Dark Crime Drama, I personally prefer it the most out of the Anthony Hopkins/Hannibal Series. And I definitely prefer the Ridely Scott Movie Adaptation to the Harris Novel.
When I found out how the book ended I was furious. I can't help thinking the writer DESTROYED Clarise. I would have preferred she die as the kick ass intelligent agent who was a rolemodel than be brainwashed into being a serial killer's sex slave. It would be hard to convince me the writer doesn't hate women and I can't believe he was able to write such a great character for the original. It's like he took Wonder Woman and made her a sex worker.
Did he saw “give my love to Judy Foster?”
This is a remake of "Man Hunter", not a sequel to "Silence", per se.
No, "Red Dragon" was a remake of "Man Hunter"
Love this movie
One of the most disappointing follow ups to an amazing movie...one that should be taught in Film School. I read Hannibal before it was realeased and was so disappointed and horrified that I knew this would become a laughable movie.....and yes I along with most of the crowd laughed when Dr. Lector threw the towel over Ray Liotta's brain !!!!!!!!!
Loved all the novels, movies and tv show. Except for red dragon. Manhunter was better
❤❤. William Peterson was incredible in that,,one of my favorite films❤❤ and Brian Cox was great as Lecter❤❤
@@moondra3481 right. It's so good and so underrated. I love the red dragon novel but manhunter is a much better adaptation than the red dragon movie
@@colewilliams9432 I agree💋
Hannibal High 😂
00:35 Yea he wouldn't just be a teacher he would also be black, trans and identify as a chair with a weekly arc of trying to find someone who will accept him as a chair then lead kids in public protest against locking up criminals because they have feelings too.
The reason that seems like a thing and is actually frightening is you're correct; that's not hyperbole, that's logical theory based on evidence. And while it's easy to blame Disney, it's not their fault. It's ours i.e., the consumers that need to be fed not only content, but original content almost every hour of every day. It's a societal problem, one each of us is guilty of and complacent to. Disney is not a person; it's a conglomerate; a business entity in a capitalist society. It (Disney) exists to make money, that's it's sole purpose and to criticize it for doing what it's made to do while actively feeding the belly of the beast? That's hypocrisy at it's pique. Our money is the fuel that keeps the machine running -- and it's byproduct/pollution is "toxic" behaviors, apathy and cynicism.
Now I'm going to shut up, and zone out on CZcams vids and my phone until my brain goes numb enough for me to pass out.
I flunked out of Hannibal High. True story!
Such a bad joke in the beginning about Disney.
It's amazing that with the ocean of talent behind this project, something so boring and forgettable washed up.
Unlike many I loved this one.
I went white and nearly fainted during the brain scene at the cinema. only time that has ever happened to me!
The Hannibal show is really good
I always loved hannibal The Sequel. The only thing that sucked for me, is it ended
What is wrong... trying to turn the villain into a hero.... like Michael Myers going after idk The Deadites or something
good description of mitch McConnell
He hopped on his elephant and Crossed the Bifrost Bridge
Well. I liked it. I don't care about anyone else's opinions.
Whoever I meant
Cordell 😂😂😂
Yeah i sure wonder why Disney scares us... NOT! 😂😂
I want a sequel where Hannibal gets cought or killed!!!
It’s rare that I love a movie and hate its sequel. Hannibal absolutely sucked. I hated everything about it.
4:30
It's Totino's, not Tostitos lol
The thing with me is that I liked the film, but I didn’t love it.
I absolutely love silence and red dragon.
Just like the novel, the first half was better than the second half. Not having Foster hurt the film, but not really.. the script was just bland.
