- Head to squarespace.com/oddtinkering to save 10% off your first purchase of a website or domain using code ODDTINKERING In this video I'll restore a trech art lighter shaped like a book from World War I. The lighter was handmade by someone during the war. It was not designed to have the wick and cotton replaced because it was soldered shut. I desoldered the triangle pieces of copper to remove the "hinge" and then I desoldered teh bottom of teh fuel tank to remove the cotton and old wick.
I cleaned most of the oxidation off with vinegar. Then the parts were sanded with multiple grits of sandpaper up to 2000 grits and polished with a buffing wheel. New wick and cotton were inserted and I made a new hinge to replace the old one. All the pieces were soldered back on using a heat gun. When using a heat gun it's important to make sure other solders on the part don't meltand all the parts don't fall off.

For those who might be wondering : Souvenir de Lorraine means memory from Lorraine. Lorraine is a region located in the North East of France, which means the lighter was probably made by a french dude, or as we call them : Poilu (it means hairy because they couldn't shave). There are many trench art lighters that were made, sadly most of them have been destroyed or lost, but some are family treasure. Especially in Alsace (a region that was part of the Nazi Germany) because that's were most of the war in France took place.
(Forgive my poor English, as it is not my first language)
rest assured, your english was very clear and i loved this comment! it was very insightful :)
@@achewy7700 Aww thank you ^^
I would never have guessed from this comment that English was not your native language, it is perfect. Is French your native language?
Note : Germany did invade the French regions of Alsace and Lorraine (several times) but at the time of WWI, Germany wasn’t nazi !
@@fife8332 It is
'i wonder who will be replacing the cotton after the next 100 years' sounded so poetic, like a precious object that is going to live forever thanks to these kind of restorations ✨
I love that he didn't go over the top working on this one. He kept it mostly the same, just cleaned it up, gave it a polish, replaced a pin and then just the normal things like cotton, wick and flint
It was likely the maker of the lighter who went over the top. Since the lighter is still with us, he survived, presumably.
@@marklammas2465 very droll but I got the point going over the top to fight was such a waste of way too many lives and horrific for a few feet at a time. Edit spelling.

You must be new here
Ducktor is such a great boss, supervising these great restorations.

My first thought was "Ze implements of persuasion are ready, Master!"
he's a great employer
The Ducktor is such a good boss, he makes the manager at my last job look like a lazy bastard 🤣
You make repairing and restoring things look so relaxing, meanwhile I'm in a blind panic when I try to do anything of the sort

Yea lol I literally watch these to ease my mind
morning tea and this = perfection!
Have some confidence in yourself ffs
Oo lol
The fact that the lighter hadn't disintegrated beyond salvage is impressive in itself, awesome job on this!
It's bronze. Oxidation on bronze is much more gentle than things like iron.
@@VanisherXP True.
The restoration was great to watch but I was distracted the entire time, thinking about that young man that owned it during the war, what would he be thinking seeing it being restored like this 100+ years later. Great video, well done all the way around. 👊
That's a cool book lighter, you don't see those every day. And amazing restoration, turned out much better than I expected 👍
Yeah especially how old it is and wasn't thrown out a long time ago

Not to be used for burning books!
In my opinion he shouldnt have sanded the scratches those are war memories
@@marklammas2465 or was it? 🤔
Lovely, I always think a small part of someone lives on through their creations and you've just given some proud soldier another 100 years of legacy.
On the lighter is written "souvenir de Lorraine", which means "Memory of Lorraine". Lorraine is a region in France that was heavilly disputted betwen France and Prussia (or Germany) overs decades.
Love how he got out an induction heater and used it to bend a steel bar...just to get the sides put back in place. Real attention to detail and quality there.
The level of attention to details! Vinegar instead of sandblasting, induction heating for steel bar, all top notch
'... Weren't designed to be replaceable' but that design won't stop me bc I have a heat gun 😂😂 Also especially loved the 'as bendy as an iPhone' XD I love watching your videos, it's so calming, it's fantastic to see what those things can look like again, and you've also inspired me start a few of my own little repairs and cleanings!

Copper is so satisfying to watch be restored, it's cool to see it go from dull and oxidized to shiny and new again.
oxidized copper has its charm too
@@cobaltdragon7072 copper patina is so pretty to look at
@@Babushkabongwatr I agree.
I bet whoever made this would be so proud to see his creation working again all this time later.
These videos are so bingwatchable, also gives me actually alot of inspiration to also learn and perform these kinds of restorations. Very unique and understandable to newbies, thanks
omg i know. always just the right length, even good asmr
I actually did repair my PS4 controller due to inspiration from this guy. :o
@@brynshannon6692 that's awesome. good on you
I am in love with this video. It combines two things I love: restorations and books. The fact that lighter is shaped like a gorgeous antique tome just made my day. It's beautiful.
104 years old thing brought back to life
Dude must have been an avid reader with this trench lighter. Glad it's seeing a good restoration after all these decades.

Wow ! I want a lighter like that and I don't even smoke ! That's how impressed I am . Amazing work
This is an amazing piece of art! I'm so thankful there are people like you out there treating things like this with the respect they deserve.
🔧 WOW! 🎖 An AMAZING Restoration!!! I loved the Induction Heater! Great Job!
I've just started collecting and fixing old lighters, purely inspired by watching this channel! Thanks the guidance!
That is an absolutely beautiful treasure! Your talent and craft have restored a memory of someone so long ago. Fantastic workmanship!
"I wonder who will be replacing the cotton after the next 100 years" this sentence destroyed me
My stomach/organs have been giving me trouble recently so this is nose to watch to distract me from the pain :))
Keep up the good work babe 👍❤️
That’s a beautiful lighter. It’s good to see you and the Ducktor.

I’m reading all quiet on the western front so this is a real nice treat for me thank you 🖤
Another incredible restoration of a basket case item. It would be an honor to own that fine piece of trench art. Thank you for preserving it, and sharing your videos brother. God bless. Rev. D.
Ducktor prepared everything for the procedure! 👍
The ductor is making sure you're doing the right job. I heard he's fair but firm, like legendary boxing ref Joe Cotez
The fact that its over 100 years old and doesn't crumble to dust on contact is frankly astounding
I enjoy watching you restore stuff. This book lighter from the trenches of WWI has become one of my new favorites.

The fact that theres people like you who can fix items that look far gone to looking brand new is a miracle! You have a magical gift!
Where on earth did you find that? I'm always amazed at all the different states and items you restore.

PAUL WALKER!!!!
A lot of things are sent to him, and i'm guessing he also goes to a lot of garage sales, or uses some sort of website to buy old used stuff, such as ebay.
La Lorraine ma région !!! Merci de restaurer ce vieux témoin de l'histoire. Lorraine my state !!! thank to restore this old witness !!!
Safety Tip: Don't wear latex gloves near an open flame. Unless you want the added joy of peeling burnt rubber off your skin after having been on fire.
I like watching mr. Ducktor and his helper restoring such meaningful pieces. You have an amazing talent mr. Ducktor!

Excellent restoration. Everything was done carefully to keep the lighter from being changed too much. Lovely work
Wow. This lighter so awesome. Ready to watch a restoration.
Stunning! What a piece of incredible history! Thanks for sharing.
I like that it still has a few imperfections! Adds character.
i was just thinking, these past few days, 'it should be tine for an ODD Tinkering video-- i hope he's alright!' and bam! video in my sub box
Wow it’s a french lighter from a region in France near the German border! This was where the final push of the french and British soldier happened before the end of ww1
The meaning on the lighter means “in memory of Lorraine” in french
@@josephinemerlino1591 I was looking for a translation. Thanks!
THAT HEATER IS THE COOLEST THING I'VE EVER SEEN!!!
5:39 can confirm, used the heater on my iPhone and it bent really easily.
Now I need a new iPhone.
Fell in love with the beauty of the lighter!
Another mesmerising restoration
Excellent workmanship
Great skills + great production = a great experience. Thanks.
Had no idea trench art was a thing. Then again, they must have been really bored during the stand offs and quiet moments where they just stared eachother down.
This is cool, different from the usual game console clean up . Seeing old history being restored.

I like watching your restore🥰
Awesome. As I live in the trenches (eastern front) I really appreciate this!
It's nice there is a restoration channel that doesn't use an annoying soundtrack while doing the restoration
Beautiful restoration
Fantastic job!!! I loved the Ducktor’s cameo!!!
It looks amazing! The brass is so shiny. Great work!
That is the most beautiful lighter i've seen.
I mean it looks like a book
this is incredibly satisfying
You do such beautiful restoration on everything and with Ductor by your side.
Everytime I watch this videos I end up in such a peaceful and relaxed state of mind.
Very unique and excellent result!
Beautiful restoration Odd well done
Beautiful work as always!
Such a beautifull lighter, thank you for restoring it
jószeeeffff
You're work is so beautiful.
Lovely job
Someone said the Atari was your best video but I don't understand how they could see that as more impressive than something like this.
Wow! Such amazing work!
Beautiful restoration.👍
I love how he kept it the same, but should've probably made a hole to replace wick & cotton.
14:51 that looks sick! you did a great job on making it pretty!
It's beautiful.
So fascinating to watch
Amazing Restoration 👍👍
Thank you for that Mr. Tinkering Oddly! 😏 Oddly Enough? I quite enjoy watching you Tinker!
The Hammer Cam is the best! I love it! ❤️😅
Yes! The lighters are the best!
Some great humour and some wonderful work!
old lighter looks fascinating
Hi, I'm french. I like honore you for reviving this incredible piece of history. Thank you, man keep up the good work 👍
Some things just shouldn't be modified in my opinion. All I would've done is clean it a little bit and donated it to a museum. Trench art is always in demand at war museums but not when they're altered... just my opinion
I was also going to say similar. I love watching these restorations, but I would have thought that anything like this would lose any value once it’s made to look like new again. I was watching a programme about upcycling the other day and the person polished a brass tray and was told by an expert that it had lost most of its value just for being polished.
Gotta love the Quacktor.
Beautiful work, as always 👏
There’s not telling if this creator lived or died, but either way makes me think what a waste of life it is. I sometimes wonder what my Marine brothers could have achieved had they lived, and I think the same with things like these lighters. The creativity, the artistic ability, and the all around skill wasted so young. The world would be better with a bright young person unsullied by war
considering the lighter is a souvenir from a workshop and engraved at the end of the war, i'm p sure he did in fact survive
I'm addicted to your videos 🙂
Hi Odd tinkering, I was wondering how the flint wheel was removed from the lighter at the 0:52 second mark in the video. There was a jump cut that just then shows the piece as separated. I was curious if you used something like WD40 or heating mechanism to get it free. I do enjoy your videos a lot they help me relax before bed and I was delighted to see this new upload. Have a good day and be safe!
Серьезная работа.Респект мастеру!
Nice work! It’s really cool to see how far you’ve come with this channel!
Wonderful restoration as usual. Couldn't help but wonder the events that caused the dents on the front and back. Rough conditions during a war? A quarrel with a loved one and an angry throw after lighting a ciggarette? Or maybe just a result of accidentally dropping it while in a hurry. It's amazing the things this book lighter has seen... if only it could speak
Absolutely amazing. I never would have imagined that this is what it looked like originally. I just discovered this channel and I already watched 5 different restorations. It would be amazing to see the things this lighter has seen (although I’m sure some of those things are better left forgotten). Subscribed.
It's a nice lighter. Great job 👍🏻
Лучший!!! Спасибо за потраченное время!!!
Very nice restore on a cool lighter
Quality work! When I try to restore something usually I am running out of patience
Nice. after such a long time it now makes fire again.
