- AXPONA moved to the spacious, beautiful Renaissance Schaumburg Hotel this year. The show was 30% larger than last year and the crowds were large all three days, but notably on Friday, which is usually a slow show day.
Walk the floors and halls with AnalogPlanet editor Michael Fremer who concentrated on all things analog at the show, though the coverage does not ignore the rest. The video opens with a "breeze through" of the large, ground floor rooms, followed by more complete coverage of analog developments in the EXPO area.
This is the first of a number of AXPONA 2018 videos you're sure to enjoy.

This was excellent! Mr. Fremer Thank You for bringing it to those that cannot attend .
Great convention to visit, glad I watched the whole thing.
Thanks Michael!
What amazes me is that even through your mic on the day the quality of these systems come through. Love your videos.
Great video! You really do a great job on these show tour videos! Always enjoyable!
Thank you for doing this for people like myself who can’t make it to these shows. Also, thanks for the laughs. You have a great sense of humour

Thanks for posting this Mr. Fremer. I'm with you. I like what I was able to pick up on those Zavfino tables. Looking forward to a review.
Excellent video, Michael. Thanks!
I love spending time on your channel !A great honor and pleasure to have your guidance in musical endeavors !!TY
Yes! I love these video's! Very interesting, wonderful stuff! Thanks Mr fremer!
Pro tip : you can watch series at InstaFlixxer. I've been using it for watching all kinds of movies recently.
@Holden Shepherd yea, I have been watching on instaflixxer for since december myself :)
I love that you love "As Falls Wichita, So Falls Wichita Falls" so much!
That record is brilliant!
Good on you Mikey, really interesting for us vinyl heads. What a time to be alive!
looks like a great show with big rooms. thanks for the vid.
Thanks, Michael good information on new products. Yes, I to like Nice Ash!
So many amazing turntables under $5000! Glad to see this trend. Gives me hope for the future.
I agree I think between in 5k and 10k
It's good enough for a turntable.
Sound of that system HERE is fantastic. Can't imagine how nice it does in the flesh!
Nice video. Thank you so much for sharing.
I love how even Mr. Fremer has the same conversation with himself when he sees records as I do! Liked and subbed!
just amazing show
great videos, thanks!
wow phenomenal sound
Michael truly thank you for doing this for those of us that were too sick to be there, I really appreciate you and your time. The guy in the Perfect Vinyl Forever lives in my state and I have met him and he has done these demos and offers this service through my local dealer and my local dealer was at this event, which is why I was so bummed that I was sick.
The guy from Perfect Vinyl Forever built the machines himself over several years to perfect it and is a joy to deal with. I will tell you Michael the guy from Perfect Vinyl Forever does a good job and I have used him twice already for two valuable albums. I normally clean my records myself. Michael even though this is cheaper than the Autodeck, the way that he is spraying that solution on the KismussAudio KA-RC-1, would ruin my precious Blue Note Labels because there is no protection for the labels, which would drive me nuts and 3 cycles for 5 minutes, how about one cycle for 15 minutes and to keep putting on the solution between plays, you are right this could ruin your life. The Autodeck is more expensive, but the process of it is more straight forward and less hands on and I'm sure produces the same if not better results.

Man, hearing you rave about Pat Metheny/Lyle Mays "As Falls Wichita, So Falls Wichita Falls" really brought back some great memories. My late father really loved that album, and I enjoyed listening to it with him. Thanks for the enjoyable stroll down memory lane.
That record holds up on its own musical merit, completely independent from any nostalgia connected to it.
Great video!!
Great video
Luve this show
I'm 64 and bought a uturn orbit. Love it!
Indeed those Zavfino TTs look really interesting. The look that they are well built. I'm just wondering if these TTs would allow other tonearms to be installed.
Great video!!!
Nice video.
This calibration software from analog magik looks very interesting and promising.
That filter on the back of the HEPA filtered record dryer isn't a HEPA filter though.
That ZV8 looked really good. I wonder how it compares to the VPI's with similar shape and how it sounds in general. Im in the market for a TT.
Really cool, and inspiring :-)
The Pate Metheny/Lyle Mays album is on Amazon Music!! ....it may not be audiophile quality but hey!
lovely video I do like the look of those clearaudios .Do you like The DpS turntable I do
Saw the Analog Magik turntable setup videos a while back. Im not sold on them as they seem to use a test record for setting anti skating, without giving the modulation percentage of the track.
My parents had a PE turntable i 1970 i still recall how cool it looked as a 6YR old lol
I have that "TV Jazz Themes" album, some silly fun right there.
Great video.

Gotta love 9:05 "I don't need to buy any records." 2 seconds later....."Oh, this is good...." LOL!
I'm thinking about getting a Kirmuss Audio Ultrasonic. What do you think Michael?
I love to see these show tours, since I can't travel much. It's slightly aggravating in that I'm once again in the market for a turntable (my old Technics SL-BD22 broke down) and of course I'd love to own something stylish and modern, but will have to settle for something in the 250 to 400 euro range :-D
Michael, were you happy with the cleaning from the Kirmuss Audio Ultrasonic?
The Moonbeam is stunning and I am sure the Comet is as well. I see a new table for summer.
What do you think of the “IN THE GROOVE ULTIMATE ULTRASONIC RECORD RESTORATION SYSTEM” aka Model KA-RC-1 by Kirmuss Audio ?
55:50 so.......we don't get to see the result after all that?
All this attention to the vinyl ..what about the album covers ..Does anyone reissue or re-make an album cover itself?? Thank-you !!
Thanks for taking us on the show floor. Perfect Vinyl Forever peeked my interest. Do you have any thoughts on that service after speaking with them?
9:48 "These Das Altewerks are fantastic" - one of the first records I got when I started getting into vinyl last july was the Das Altewerks version of the Gregorian Chants from 1966, which is still one of the best sounding used records I have, and which turns out to have been a famous record back in the day - only $AU7.50 down here in australia and I've been looking out for Altewerks ever since.

Thank god nais
Maureen Forester I solisti di Zagreb...can’t believe they had that...awesome:)
Always wanted the Sprout but no way to buy it.
I love the music at 4:27' and 5:16'. ------Could you let me know the albums' name? thanks!!!
I guess axis uhqr should be shipped out soon? wow that vinyl colour is aaaaaaaaamazin
Where in the video was the Garrard 301 in the picture?
Harumph! And Hurgle Burgle! Nice to see Mr. Kevvy in the flesh though.
Thanks Micheal for the video. Kirmuss cleaner looks very interesting but with only two of the four slots for 33 1/3 it kills the purchase for me. The 45 and 78 slots are wasted on me and I would bet a large number of others. Maybe the next model will have 4 33 1/3 slots! Tha
I remember years ago when I worked at a stereo store and we were a LINN dealer and had the LP 12 of course and one day a guy came and set-up a Clear Audio table and didn't tell me much about it or anything and he just left after setting it up. I was the repair tech/salesperson. I hooked the turntable up and listened and it was kinda cold and dead sounding so I never tried to sell it to anyone. We sold a lot of LP12's and I set them up.
Wait a minute, Kevin Deal was with Prima Luna in 2018? When did he start up Upscale?
Great turtables, and well shot video. Does anyone know what the song that starts at 2:15 is? Google lyrics isn't helping. Thanks for posting.
metalfiend124 The song is “sticks and stones “ by Nils Lofgren from his “Acoustic Live” album. Cheers.
Thanks so much, this is the first I've ever heard of Nils' music, unless he was doing something with Bruce Springsteen.
DAMNIT: Where the heck in this vid is the Artisan Fidelity Statement TT you have shown in the previous pic of this video ???
Pat Metheny "As falls Witchita Falls ...Brilliant work ! Im former Principle Opera Baritone New York City Opera Julliard trained by Beverly Peck Johnson teacher to Anna Moffo Tebaldi ..me .. lol
Where was Roksan? I was looking forward hanging with Nima...😂 (my name is Nima)
Absolutely a great video. Can you make them longer?
More coming!
At what point in the video is that Garrard 301 in? I don't remember seeing it.
coming attraction to future video posting soon
That ultrasonic cleaner seems to spin too fast, I'd slow the rpm
For a world that’s supposedly going all streaming, digital. There sure are a lot of turntables still being made by so many.
Many of us have fairly large vinyl collections, many of which have not been released on any digital format.
Not to mention, those that would argue, that SOME aspects of vinyl playback sound better than digital formats.
pandstar - I am very aware of those statistics. I myself came into a lot of vinyl that was given to me by a friend and I also just recently purchased my very first TT. I was just really surprised at how many of them are still being manufactured.
Hi Michael , did you have time to listen the records from that guy with chess stuff?
No.
Tell Mr Framer, they are not looking for staff to clean the living room by chance? did I qualify to clean everything, really everything! 😂😂😂😂
Despite what I've seen here, I still suspect that most of those records were pressed from a digital file.
Your suspicions are incorrect.
Nitty Gritty is Back Baby!
"less separation, but more even separation..." WHO, who thinks of these things.. where do they find these words?
Wheres VPI?
que pasa cuando un disco se raya o lo rayan
700 bucks for that software. Oh please. Great video thanks.
Those record cleaners looked like reasonably priced alternatives to the German and Korean ultrasonic cleaners.
Thanks Michael, great video though I did laugh, all the guys selling cleaning machines remind me of those, but wait, if you buy this now infomercials, especially the guy applying the shaving brush to your record! :)
55:08
scratched??
Again, the Harry Belafonte at Carnegie hall is on Amazon!!
"On Amazon"? As what? This set produced from the original 3 track tape all analog? or some file produced record?
Michael, I don’t think it was the special edition you mention.
That new ultrasonic bath for 700$ looks like a nice product for future vinyl listeners that need to clean. Im not a big fan of them using strong alcohol but I suppose it was mpstly used as a surfactant.
Can't believe the guy in the Zavfino booth didn't know who you were, Seriously? Placing an order for Kirmuss cleaner today!
I like the cleaning service!! @1:02:43
Heaven.... I'm in heaven..... :)
I bet you went back later and bought a/some records. It’s hard to turn away from your true passion?
was this what we read together
Did they hire those UTurn guys from Craigslist?
soy ingeniero de componente y yes....
Turntable Nirvana !:)
I know you're really against using alcohol, but the very vast majority have at least a small amount of it in every solution. The guy in the lab coat, who was artfully dodging your concern of alcohol used chemistry against you calling it propanol, and saying matter of factly that it was propane based, which is rubbing alcohol. Typically depending on where the bend in the propanol makes it iso-propyl alcohol. It's like saying it's not Round Up because we use glyphosate. But nice job as usual and yes, everybody knows you! :-)
hello Analog Planet this was hifi show or vinyl show
It was a hi-fi show. And a vinyl show. We cover analog gear and vinyl.
P.S I had a Linn sondek yrs ago
I still have!
My trusty Phillips 212 Electronic Turntable, with custom made, ultra low mass tonearm. Will be buried with me...
5argeTech /\ Had the GA 212 paired with a Stanton 681 EEE, for 40+ years until passing it down to my son who is just getting into vinyl. Loved that table, never had a problem.
Good for your son! He is getting a classic that is Forever, a classic!!!!
PS- I designed the tonearm myself. I replaced the original. Tracked at 1.5 grams Audio technica Moving coil cart. with Pre-amp.. Used Cart-a-lign Turntable protractor... Super sweet. I have albums that are 45yrs old and they sound like I just brought them from the record store... Discwasher was a must! and the stylus brush too!
Also have the AR manual Turntable. But the 212 is my masterpiece!
The Perfect Vinyl Forever cleaning service at the end seemed much more humble in real life than on their website and on forums. Its a good option to have, but outrageously hyperbolized marketing claims like "As good as master tape" and "Increased dynamics" from a clean just slithly durned me away in the beginning. I wish there were places like that all over so you wouldnt have to ship your records, then Id give it a try for sure.
nitty gritty made the "Record Dr." " when I bought one 10 years ago for $200. It does a great job, but you dont need a record cleaner. you can hand wash them with micro fibre, distilled water + a few drops of photo flo and drip dry them on your mother in laws dish rack o'er night.
Remember folks, before spending £1000s. Shit in shit out.
Would Nitty Gritty be an acceptable company name in the current climate???
Two things: That Kirmuss dude didn't hesitate to put his fingers all over Fremer's vinyl, which I thought was odd even for a guy touting a record cleaner. And the guy discussed by Steve Evans, who thought his Jamaican pressing was an EX grade just because it looked pretty, was probably dreaming. There is no such thing as a quiet Jamaican pressing.
cootaloot Thats always a hard question to answer right. I mean what if a record was only pressed on poor vinyl during the oil crisis years for example? Is every record, even the sealed ones at most VG+ because they are noisy? Hard to say.
The guy said it look EX+ but he couldnt say if it played like that.
What I found most controversial here is the spacing of records in a cavitation bath. The guy with the machine that only cleaned 1 record said its not possible to clean 10 at a time, yet the vinyl forever service guy said it does work just fine. Whos right?
Well, I've been saving for an ultra sonic cleaner and would much prefer one that cleans more than two LPs at a time. I've seen the spacing argument here and there and have no idea which is right. 10 records seems extreme but four or five would be great. Hopefully, Kirmuss will off options sans the 45 and shellac options as I don't really need those.
Jamaica's vinyl pressing plants are legendary for using poor vinyl and having bad quality control. A quiet Jamaican pressing is something of a unicorn in my experience.
cootaloot Interesting, well then the question becomes, would you grade every Jamaican pressing VG+ or less, even the sealed ones?
Well there can't be a separate scale for grading bad pressings. If that were the case, then everything pressed at URP in Nashville over the last five or six years would also need its own scale.
But if I'm selling a Jamaican pressing on Discogs it's going to be play-graded because I don't want there to be any doubt, and I will describe it until I run out of characters. If I were to sell a sealed one, I would list it as "Near Mint" simply because it's sealed and then explain in detail that it will almost certainly be noisy for the reasons stated previously.
Having said all of that, the real monetary value in Jamaican records is their rarity. People who collect that stuff know what they're getting as far as fidelity.
Soooo glad to have gotten rid of all vinyl years ago! CDs are SO much better.
"If it's not on CD, it's not for me!"
Ouch! X( @ 40:20 we see a TT without a tonearm Lift... Sorry Michael Fremer, but to lift a Tonearm manually is not always a skill anyone can learn as you claim @ 40:50! My hands shiver due to my medication I must take every day, and there is no chance for me to lift a Stylus "safe" from the surface of the record. It is good for you, that you still can do it, but my hands are too unsafe, and in order to save my precious vinyl, I better don`t try...
Audio research stuff look like portable microwaves
- Is it good?
- If Fremer's suggesting it, just get it!
