The second section of a China-funded railway connecting Kenya’s capital Nairobi to Naivasha, a town in the Central Rift Valley, opened on October 16, 2019.Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta, who was on board for the maiden journey, used the opportunity to reject criticism that the infrastructure project is a white elephant.Critics say the project known as the Standard Gauge Railway will be unable to generate enough revenue from cargo services to cover its cost.

The next step, Kenyan engineers must learn how to do it by themselves, so they can create jobs for young Kenyans and Africans. The more you produce, the more you can print money without risk of inflation. It's a simple mathematical equation: just multiply what you have done by repeating it many times.

Shawn Li not sure which is worse. China’s loans are not 1.5billion in cold hard cash, the infrastructure could be valued at cost of 1.5billion (construction, inventory, etc). But often, the construction is done by Chinese companies who bring in their own Chinese workers and supply of materials are from China, etc. local companies or economy gets a small portion of this revenue.
Much of the 1.5billion doesn’t cycle within the borrowing nation’s economy.
I m not sure what is the agreed interest rate with China for these nations. So cannot say if IMF Interest or China’s interest rate is worse.
In the end, when nation is unable to payback, is austerity worse or losing part of your nation’s sovereignty worse? That depends on individuals opinion I guess.

That said, they now are full on economics, and besides improving their own ability about business (which already huge because of huge masses of people and resources), they need "broader" trading partners, which in this cases, those who didn't much capped by the western economics power. Improving their economy would improving china mainland economy at the end too, thus raising their power of influence as the current western power do (there's so much video about this). Different than Soviet communism, chinese communism is a practice of government handles all control of power while giving it's citizens freedom of work for themselves, which on my opinion is much efficient than the current western power are doing.

Thats why China is much better friend, when will help africa get out of being poor and so africa will no longer be booring place with bunch of poor people, when africa can create something intresting with being richer.

so according to the logics of comments below… Chinese should not build this railway in the first place because of debt?
then who should biuld it? americans? europeans? there must be a reason why Kenya government chose to coorperate with China in the first place
or simply those commenters just want Kenya build their own railway which could take several decades for the same project that could be done in several years?
I mean the Kenya governers should be smart enough - probably smarter than those commenters - to make decisions themselves based on their need
last but not least…what is your business of criticizing the domestic decisions of the government of another nation?

I still remember a decade or two ago we mostly saw famine and poverty in Africa on TV, and the west was asked to help, to donate or raise money for some Christian charity but really, how can a country be established or strengthened through charities? China's business and infrastructure investment is building partnerships (and not this top down sympathetic charities and donations) and actually building long-term services to lift living standards and facilitate economy growth. This is way more substantial.

First and foremost it is the discretion of the country in which the facility is being built who decide on its viability. The BRI just facilitates them. The truth about "strategic infrastructure" has been the euphemism of the western colonial masters to built infrastructures purely to exploit and extract natural resources from their colonies. After hundreds of years of colonial exploitations, you should know why these countries are so underdeveloped in their infrastructures.

Preservation of the terrain probably. That or end to end, the elevations are higher than the lowland. Perhaps the terrain is simply less suitable for a train system at ground level.
Also flooding can occur and that will greatly disrupt travel on the rail network. Like causing damage to the rails, delaying or even shutting down the trains. Worse case scenario is people getting caught in flooded land and rescues need to be conducted, people injured or killed and the train sustaining heavy damage.
