How to thoroughly clean a 20 Gallon Saltwater aquarium!
In this video I’m cleaning the 20 gallon saltwater aquarium, I’m also substrate vacuuming and cleaning the filters this time. You’ll also learn a trick of the trade with a coral feeder. This took around 30mins to complete. The more you do it, the more comfortable you’ll be and you’ll develop your own map to get it done as fast and efficiently as possible. If you have any questions at all, don’t hesitate to drop them down below.

And again, thank you so much for watching!
Just watched your 20 gallon setup series and I'm pretty excited about starting my first saltwater tank in the near future. Your instruction is pretty clear and it is easy! I used to have several freshwater setups, but I'd love to delve into the marine realm.
Great video 👏🏻

Just set up my first salt water 3 days ago. Got 2 clowns, a mandarin goby, a blenny, and a baby snowflake eel (which will be moved into a 75 gallon when he outgrows my 20.) All ate on their first day home. So far everybody is happy and healthy
Very nice job
Thank you.
nice video like tips !

Thanks 👍🏾👍🏾
Great content and great job man. Thanks to your wife also
Thanks Bro, we appreciate you. 👊🏾
My dream tank😛😛😛
Got my 20 gallon up and running a week ago, added 2 clowns yesterday, not sure when I should add a sand star? And that for the info, much appreciated champ 🏆
Good to hear champ 👍🏾
Hey sorry I'm a noob I plan on getting started with my first ever salt water tank I have been really enjoying your video they are very helpful and informative I was just wondering why can't you have a clean up crew in your 150 gallon tank
It’s all good bro. And the reason is because I have these predator fish that will eat the clean up crew.
thank for all the info. where did you get your rocks?
You’re welcome bro. And from my local fish store.
Do you need to have two filters for a 20gal or would one work? Great video!
Thank you! And great question! One would work fine. If I was to use just one with the 20 gallon, I would at least use the larger of the two. So the Fluval aqua clear 70 would be my choice. Just so I can have as much filtration in my tank as possible. Always go with 2 if not 3x the filtering capacity. Thank you again for your question, support and feedback!
Nice video! I just started my first 20g saltwater tank. I kickstarted it with Seachem stability and pristine. I have 20lb of live rock in it and I added two very small clownfish in it last week. When do you think I could add a clean up crew? As of now, 4 days after adding the fish, I have a small amount of bacterial bloom..
You can add them now. They’ll eat the leftover food the fish don’t eat, just make sure to also feed them if they aren’t getting enough leftovers.
Snorkel snails, lol. Have had our since day one over a year and a half ago through MANY disasters and crashes.
Lol. Nassarius snails live up to 3yrs you’re halfway there. Lol
They’re my favorite snails, since they keep the sand turned over.
Good video, man. I'm new to the hobby. I have a new 20 long tank, a new aqua clear 70 HOB and a new 100 watt heater that was all given to me as a gift. I've been wanting to set up a salt water tank for the longest time. I went to a local fish store to ask for advice and if that was at all possible. I was told it was not. That a canister filter is the only option for that size tank. So i left a little disappointed. Since this is all new to me, I want to keep everything simple. Once i get the hang of things. Thats when i want to upgrade. But for now thats all i have to work with. Aside from sand and rocks, what else is needed? I do know how the nitrogen cycle works.
Thank you so much for your feedback! And the LFS was wrong about it not being possible. You have exactly what you need to get started. It’s exactly how I started. If you’re going to run a fish only tank, you can get by without a skimmer. Just don’t overstock it. The only other thing you need is a good light. Not reef/coral light, but a good light.
My 20 gallon tall is being filtered by an aqua clear 50 & 70. A 100 watt heater and reasonably priced light from Amazon. Your setup will give you the experience you need. Then you can upgrade when your ready. That’s exactly what I did.
Just buy your saltwater premade, live sand and live rock. You’ll be able to add fish within a week.
How did you make sure the new water was the same temperature as the water in the tank?
I’m diving in to try my first salt water ever at 75gallons, any pointers is appreciated??!!, great videos as well 👍🏼
That’s great! That 75 gallon will allow some nice options for stocking. You running a sump or canister filters on your system?
What light do you have I have a vivarspectra 165watt for my 75 gallon
How can you warm the new saltwater before you put it on the fishtank ? Is there any tip about that ???
I just started in this hobby got a 20 gallon and had it running for about 1 month with fish and live rock and have no algae is that bad?
Where did you get the temperature strips from that are on the tank?
At what point in this process did you do such a thorough cleaning after starting the tank setup? Like in the ''first'' water change did you do this?
I can’t remember bro…. It’s a really old video.
I have a tidal 75 hob filter on a 20 gallon tank for a little under a year. The filter came with biological media and a sponge. Do I need to buy more of the biological media and slowly replace the old stuff? Same with the foam it came with do I just replace it? I usually just swish both around in some tank water that I’ve taken out for water changes. Just can’t find anything online about this 😅 great video thanks for helping
Thank you for your support m! As for needing new media. You don’t have to replace your biological media, just rinse in tank water. As for the sponges, unless they’re breaking down, just rinse them.
Hey bro, I’m a fish guy as well. Only really been in fresh water tho but me and wife are super curious with salt. So when you add your salt water to your tank like your 20. When water evaporates do you add more salt water or just tap water? Because the salt doesn’t evaporate right?
You use RODI to replenish the evaporated water. And you’re right, the salt doesn’t evaporate.
Hey, bro what is the max stock for this size tank?
Well, it really depends on the fish you put in here. As well as the filtration. I had around 10 fish in here when I first got started a few years ago. I knew I planned to upgrade so I didn’t mind overstocking it. At this point, I would probably stay under 10 fish. I currently have 5 fish in here.
I have a 29 tall I have never done a saltwater tank I wanna try one but fish only. Is Their a difference between starting a reef tank or fish only tank? Thanks good video.
There’s a very big difference. It’s best to get started with fish only. Ease into the corals.
How do you make a video on how to mix salt
How do you get the new water added the same temp??
At this time, I was warming the jugs up in the tub of hot water.
Can you add sea horse to the 20 gallon
Maybe to yours but not mines.
I just started mass It’s going good I really need help lol
What’s up with it bro? What’s going on?
Q? How hard is it to start/keep a salt water tank, and where do you get your water from? The aquarium store or do you put salt in your tank?
It’s really easy to start with like a 20 - 40 gallon.
I buy my saltwater from the LFS.
Is it necessary to add prime, stability, or stress guard when using the ready to pour saltwater?
You don’t have to when you buy your saltwater premade. Coming straight from the ocean. I don’t have to do anything to my water. Honestly I didn’t even do that when I made my water myself.
are those normal white aquarium led or is it specifically for marine
do u have a protein skimmer
At the time of this video, I only had normal white. And there’s no protein skimmer on this tank at the moment.
Do you suck up the sand? I have Coral on the bottom and sometimes i get lots of coral sucked up.
Yes I vacuum the sand, I don’t have corals on the sand to get sucked up.
So I wanted to set up a tank I don’t want to do the whole sump set up for a 20 gallon I would assume I would just get a set up like yours. What is that called or what is all involved with it? As far as what I would need to purchase.
I posted a video on how to set it up but it’s extremely easy. Buy a 20g aquarium kit, buy another 70g Aquaclear filter separately, buy a heater, live rock, live sand and buy your saltwater. Then set it up.
Just got my 1st tank for salt water any tips?
Congrats bro! As for tips, quarantine all new fish once the tank is established. Over filter your aquarium. Don’t be afraid to try something for yourself and just enjoy the hobby.
How did you warm your salt water? Did you put the heater in the premixed gallon?
Nope. If necessary I’ll put my jugs in the bathtub, fill it with hot water and raise the temperature in the jugs that way. But that’s not always needed. Room temperature water will suffice as long as your room temp is over 76 degrees.
What type of snails do you have
Those were nassarius snails.
What did you do to heat your water up in those jugs ?
I just put the whole jug in the bath tub filled with hot water. That works best and fastest for me. I don’t care about the temp being exactly the same, as long as it’s close enough.
How often is recommended to clean the tank?
Biweekly
how would u make sure ur water is the same temperature as the one that’s already in there
Room temperature is good enough if your room isn’t cold. Or throw it in the bathtub of hot water. Or put the water in a trash can and add a heater to it.
I’m trying to start up a 36 gallon tank just trying to see where to start I have the tank and the filter
Get a heater and light and thermometer.
After you have that. Go buy live sand, live rock, and premade saltwater. Put it all in your tank. Wait a couple days until it clears up and add a couple fish. It could be clownfish, damsels, etc. but I would only do two first. Wait a month and you’re good to go.
What fishes you have in the 20gallon and do you plan to upgrade at a later time? I was told I can only have 2 clown fishes and a cleaning crew.
Hello, thank you for your comment. They’ve already been upgraded to a 37 gallon. And that’s very inaccurate as long as your properly maintaining your tank, you can have more than a couple clowns in there. When I started out, I had a full nicely stocked reef tank in this same 20 gallon.
Thank you I saw the rest of your videos! Thank you for all the information very much appreciated
Hey I’m thinking of starting a tank but I just wanted to ask if you need a light? And also, what’s the minimum size tank you can use for saltwater please? ☺️
Hello, yes using a light is certainly advisable. I wouldn’t start with a tank under 20 gallons.
Thank you for getting back to me! Great videos ☺️
I have the same tank and what is ur hang on filter..?
Sponge and biological media.
I cleaned my tank and added some new fish when I was done I noticed that there was some bubbles on one of my fishes is that bad and how do I get rid of that if so
Idk what the bubbles are but I would definitely quarantine that fish or treat the whole tank accordingly.
Hey do you keep your clown fish without a lid ?
They’re not jumpers but I had a lid. Currently I don’t have a lid on my 125 gallon saltwater aquarium that has clownfish in it.
Hey my brother, I have a Question. I bought ocean water, and live rock. My question to you can I instantly add fish the next day after it cycles. I'm a fresh water guy this is my first saltwater setup I'm just curious because the store is trying to rip me a new one.
What’s up bro, good question and the answer is yes. You can add fish the next day. Live rock, live sand and pre-made saltwater (ocean water ) is all you need. Just add in something small first. A couple clownfish or damsels.. Anything like that.
@@TheFishCorner You the man, tha is for the info. I'm honestly getting into the hobbie because of so many years of working with fresh water and having 2 75 at home with cichlids I really wanted something else, and these reef tanks are sucking me in man. I started a 29gl and I put 2 clowns and inverts eith live rocks thats all I have so far and they been doing great. I'd love to see more saltwater content. Def got a sub here. I appreciate your time.
Sir please answer my this question...
Can I keep a royal grama and a yellow clown goby with a pair of ocelaris clown fish in a 24 gallon marine tank? There will be no coral in the tank only rocks..
You can for a while but why not upgrade to maybe a 40g it will provide the extra room needed for the clownfish. They’ll reach about 3in so they’ll want a little more room eventually.
@@TheFishCorner shortage of money sir💔...Iam a student That's why asking for it🥲.. can you give me a better idea about what can I keep with a pair of ocelaris clownfish?
wanted to know the measure of your aquarium?
How often do you clean your Saltwater fish tank
I try to every two weeks.
@@TheFishCorner thanks I am going to try it out with the saltwater fish I been waiting to do this for years now and when I saw your videos I said I can do it
Is it ok to only have 10lbs of live rock in a 20 gallon tank or should i add more
It really up to you. It’s dependent upon stocking and corals.
Any chance you might know why my hydrometer doesn't go up when i put it in my saltwater bucket to see how the salinity is it doesnt rise at all but when i put it in my aquarium it goes up to 1.026
Could be that you need more salt. But I would recommend a refractometer instead… the hydrometer is inconsistent and fails quite rapidly.
@@TheFishCorner thats good to know man i was stressing bad over this ima go buy one tommorow morning at petco i appreciate it alot bro thank you for replying.
I can relate, I remember I bought 2 hydrometers before buying my refractometer. I’ve only needed one and it’s lasted 4yrs thus far. And It’s all good bro, thank you for valuing my opinion enough to ask for it! 🤜🏾🤛🏾
No need to skimmer ? Just hung filter and buy ready salt water it is enough ?sorry about my language am Arabic
No worries brother. Your question is understood and valid. You can get away with this low tech system. The skimmer can be added at the discretion of the hobbyist. There’s a great deal of things you can add but I just wanted to make it as easy and low tech as possible, so people would get over their uncertainties and get started.
Great video I seen your comment under a video and decided to sub to your channel hope we become friends on here cause I love to help people and support there channel much love to you and your family 👍

I want to get a 30 gallon saltwater tank but my mom keeps making excuses not to take me to the pet store so I can buy a tank with the money I got from babysitting
Sorry to hear that, I really hope she takes you soon and you get your tank. That’s going to be an awesome saltwater tank to start with! 30 gallons will give you some very nice options!
