Must have come up on my feed as I have been looking at RC content after discovering my destroyed original Hornet while clearing my Mum's loft! I had an Optima chain drive but then I passed my driving test and got a real car so it was good watching this and having a catch up! 😊

Started racing RC cars in the mid to late 80's with my first new car being a Taniya Thundershot. After modding it and starting to loose to better cars, I moved onto the Kyosho Optima series of cars. (most guys were using Kyosho Optima and Schumacher CAT by then)
I long for the day when me and my old buddies went to a sunny little parking lot and ripped our old school buggies..the simple life Hopefully we will do it again 30 years after ... only this time with 30mins run time and temps below solder melting points....

Originally the PB Mini Mustang & the Schumacher CAT were supposed to be 1 car, a joint development between PB & Schumacher but there was a difference of opinion about development of the car so Keith Plested & Cecil Schumacher went thier separate ways & the rest as they say is history.

Great collection, Cecil Schumacher actually invented the ball differential for RC cars, and they dont run the 2-speed because it was made for nitro cars that had a mechanical brakes as the two-speed mades the car free wheels off the throttle as first gear was on a one-way bearing and the second gear rides on a ball bearing with a two shoes clutch, I tried to race my PB Mini Mustang and it was hard with no brakes, but all of these are legends,
Ball diffs were around from the days of 1/8 pan cars. Associated and Serpent used them on their cars and these were well before the Schumacher had ever been released. My RC 500, RC 300 and RC200 along with My Serpent 1/8 track car as well as the Quattro and the very first Cobra and the RC10.
These new RC vids you're doing are awesome. In fact, I've spend a considerable amount of time on Ebay following your Hornet video looking for vintage Tamiya stuff! As soon as I'd finished watching your Hornet vid, I was on the phone to my Mum asking to get my old Manta Ray and associated ton of spares down from the loft thinking I could restore it, to which she replied, "oh, that old thing, it went in the bin years ago". Nooooooooooo!
Remember the PB's well, would absolutely fly for about 4-5 laps especially when they had the 2 speed gearbox, then break down or something would snap....Great video, thank you.
My first serious racing rc car was the optima which was modified in various ways. Then I got the cat which was so much better. As far as I remember the pb suffered from brittle plastic parts in the cold english winter weather
Reminds me of buggy club, I was struggling to keep my worn out second hand super sabre running while a lot of the other kids had kyosho lazers and schumacher cat and cat2, I eventually got a lazer but the cool kids were onto lazer 2 and some other ones I can't remember. I remember with the lazer if you hit anything hard with it the little wishbone pivot retainer cap thing would snap and they were about £5 each, eventually my dad milled me one out of aluminium which solved the problem
Feel for you.. I was also budget limited but a little earlier in the game than you were. Had a wild one for my initial racing where others had Optimas and RC10's!! Thanks for watching and happy holidays

That looks like the Turbo version of the Optima since it has the Option House gold shocks, which were sooo much better than the red stock ones. I think I used the OH shocks on the my next 3 cars until Associated produced something as good. :)
Well I was a high school kid...so I wouldn’t be surprised if I did something wrong...but I’d get about a month out of the plastic counter gear....eventually I upgraded to a MIP center counter gear. Got very good at disassembling it and reassembling it.
If i remember rightly the frog would suffer drive shaft wear and gear slippage on higher power motors this was due to incorrect meshing of one of the two similar second and third gears this could be remedied by putting washer between gear and gearbox case
There are some helpful hints out there on the web where those who habe built the new Masami CAT advise not following the instruction manual to the letter. There is an easier way to assemble the kit. Also, some have said parts were missing from their kit.

When The Cat began to win every races Kyosho improved the Optima with a belt conversion kit for the Optima Turbo. They won the european championship with the french driver José Rosas (I think it was in 1986). Then came the Optima Mid and another european title in 1988 with another french driver Denis Blandin.

I had a few toys r us RC cars when I was in elementary school, the Fast Traxx (my first car) the Dagger (2nd car) and my cousin had the Rebound lol. These were not hobby grade cars in the least but now I'm finally going to get a proper first RC car that I can learn from and upgrade as my knowledge and skills progress. PS sorry about the long comment (didn't mean to write you a novel lol) I'm just REALLY excited! One last thing do you think the Kyosho Rage 2.0 is a good first RC car or would you recommend something different? I figured I should ask you being that you are an expert and I hope you have a wonderful day. ✌️😎👍🏎️💨

The optima weighed a ton, the shumachers were really fragile cars with piano wire hinge pins and a belt drive that was way over engineered and the early yokomos king of worked but the suspension was a joke and a gearbox that was about 6 inches long. Probably why the RC10 came along and made Rc racing possible for everyone. But I will always love looking at the old pictures of the 4wd cars. They just look cool.
My son raced this car when it was new. We used a Kyosho 360ST motor and 7 cell battery pack. It was the fastest car on the track at the time. A year or two later my 9 year old daughter raced the car and won the A mains many times.

Had an optima mid with an A&L trailing arm chassis. Loved it except for the need to replace the counter gear constantly due to stripping.

The Optima is not one of the first 4wd competition buggies at all. There are many and numerous from several manufacturers.
How many other 4wd buggies were there in 1985? I can only think of the Yokomo Dogfighter?
@@Number27 The Hirobo Zerda, Mugen Bulldog and Kyosho progress were all released before the optima, probably in 1984. There are others I'm sure.
He is still correct to say the Optima was ONE of the first.
