    Hello David, I have made several splined tenon stool leg projects. I never thought to test the spline in the mortise. So simple, so smart! When you were trimming the legs my brain thought that a 23 inch+ stool was pretty tall until I put 2 and 2 together and figured "aha, metric". Anyway, nice educational video, helpful. Thanks

    Super, now I know what to do with all the rounded slabs left over, after boards are cut from the log.
    Idea, - Tapered pin legs. And tapered the top of the hole, so the wedged out leg, can never go back out backwards. ( like a sledge hammer hole is tapered )
    Also your presentation was great. Nice smooth rhythm to your talk.

    Nice video. Here are some points to consider
    1. I think it's a good idea for better stability and appearance to have the legs splay out toward the ends, also. This could be accomplished just by angling the work on the drill press ramp.
    2. Whether it's better to work a drawknife bevel-up or bevel down depends on the angle of the handles relative to the plane of the blade. With most of my drawknives I have better control bevel-up except when working inside radii, as when forming the sloping shoulder of a tenon.
    3. An easy way to level a stool is to do it upside down on a flat surface after the protruding tenons are trimmed off. On just finds the shortest leg marks that length on the other legs. The length can be transferred with a mark on a stick; no ruler needed.

      +Rustic David just realised I should've probably called it a rounding plane, not sure of the official name though. I haven't got a photo of mine but this one is very similar www.google.co.uk/search?q=tenon+cutter+vintage&client=ms-android-sonymobile&prmd=sivn&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwj8trmD9drOAhVGfxoKHVTmC4sQ_AUICCgC&biw=360&bih=512#tbm=isch&q=rounding+plane+adjustable&imgrc=AIZlB1p7S9N1KM%3A

    thank you. I was making a similar chair and saw this video. I'm curious about the tenon cutter, so I'm thinking of making one by imitating the shape of the blade. It probably won't be a success right away, but I thought it was a great idea.

    • @RusticDavid
      @RusticDavid  Před 4 měsíci +1

      Hi you can copy the blade shape this creates the hollow shoulder not too difficult a task but be sure to anneal the blade after tempering so it doesn’t snap (speaking from experience) good luck

      @@RusticDavid thank you. This is where I processed and bent the tipped saw. I'm using the translation function to read the replies, so I'm not sure if I'm understanding the meaning properly, but does this mean that a softer blade would be better suited as a tool for applying force?

    Hi David, greetings from Aotearoa New Zealand, really excellent video, I'm sure yuo will do well on youtube with content like that! I'm a retired carpenter and joiner and I find myself more and more interested in rustic traditional work, I've actually made a lot of stools, love making stools, very practical and useful, I,m going to try your mortice and tenon method, is that a forstner bit you used to drill your holes? Keep making great videos!

    • @RusticDavid
      @RusticDavid  Před 2 lety +1

      Hi ,Thank you for your input, yes it was a forstner bit but any wood drill will do,I love rustic work it frees you from the accuracy of milled wood joinery and allows you to go with the natural curves of the wood, have fun! Best wishes David
