If you're confused, I'm here to help! I've been researching this and I'll put sources at the bottom. 5 out of 7 of the original reels of film from this movie were lost, so this is the remaining 2. That's a huge reason why it's confusing. Basically, the husband's family is very traditional, but the bride's isn't. However, in order to get married, the bride has to conform to the traditions for the wedding. This is shown in the first several scenes, when she wears the new shoes and falls down in them. She also makes fun of her husband's headdress by tugging on the strings that hang down. They're happily married, but then the husband has to leave for an unknown reason. Fast forward a few reels and the bride has had a baby. The sister-in-law thinks that it's unacceptable for them to raise a westernized baby, so she sets out to make life absolutely miserable for the bride. The in-laws also agree, and in her hopelessness, the bride considers killing herself with the knife that she cries with for a few minutes, then sets down and walks away. She decides against it and leaves for a while. Later, the husband is seen coming back, and he is very upset at how his family has treated his wife. The wife returns home and takes back her baby, and when she realizes that her plot to make their lives miserable failed, she kills herself with the knife that the wife almost committed suicide with earlier in the movie. The husband and wife pay homage to the family god after finding the sister's dead body, and the god figurine goes back into sunlight, which I think is the lifting of the curse of misfortune cast on them for forgetting their gods. At the very end, the whole family is shown a few years later, looking happy and healthy now that the curse is gone. I hope this helps! If you still have questions, check out the websites below.
