  • In this 90th installment, Jimmy finally gets his hands on the elusive Monoprice Indio Classic OS 20 Guitar from Monoprice. These Monoprice offsets have been out of stock for quite some time, so when the OS 20 showed up, I had to grab one. Let’s take a look at it, see what you get for very little $$ and how it sounds!

    The body wood used in this model is basswood. I mistakenly stated they were poplar in the video. I apologize for the error!
    The guitar weighs in on my scale at 7lbs, 4ounces

      Great review, Jimmy, nice playing too! My biggest concern is the weight. I love light guitars and while basswood is generally so, the fact is there's light basswood and not so light. Moreover, that thing is thick, so there's a good amount of wood there. Could you post the weight for us? Thanks!

      Thanks so much for watching and commenting! I prefer a lighter weight guitar myself, however the beauty of the offset is how nice it feels at least while sitting and playing. The contours of the Jag style body “just fits” if you know what I mean. On the road currently, but will pop it on a scale when I get back to the studio later tonight. I don’t recall it being overly heavy. Thanks again for stopping in….appreciate it! 👍🎸

    Always love seeing budget guitars that swing above their weight once a set up is done. At that (Mono)price, a trip to a guitar tech for a set up is worth it. Better yet if you can do it yourself. Remember, if you're not happy trying a fix, the tech can work it out. Just don't break the neck!

      Nice!! Glad you were able to grab one! Appreciate your stopping in, and yes, I will take your suggestion and get this all setup next week. I will let it acclimate for a few days, and see if the “sprout” will close up a bit. It’s not bad really, but up around the 10th fret up I can feel them. Nothing like my white Classic Cali, which was like barbed wire, but easily fixed! Think I will set this up similar to my black HSS…stay tuned for the video, and thanks again for watching and commenting! Congrats, and good luck on yours once you receive it! 👍🎸

    Jimmy you brought back some great memories. My friends & I used to watch Letterman in the 90's just for Rupert. My favorite was when he would have him go out in public with an earpiece & tell him what to say to strangers. Those segments were hilarious. Awesome that you got to visit him. That guitar looks & sounds great IMO. Your studio is getting pretty crowded again with all these new guitars. You may have to expand your space. All jokes aside, awesome video as always. After reading the comments, I got a kick out of people talking about not needing more guitars and yet buying more. I truly feel their pain. My latest acquisition is a Charvel Model 1 in almost pristine condition with original case with lots of case candy for $125. How could I pass that up? It put me at 302 guitars (picked up a sweet RMS 400 D amp at the same place). After watching this review I am considering picking one up along with one of the Squier Jazzmasters. @@JimmyStewart1 When it comes to vintage guitars (especially vintage Gretsch's) I am like a bird that sees a shiny object...lol Been collecting for around 30 years now. Between guitars and amps I think I might need a bigger house one of these days. As you have proven time and again, we are in a golden age of low budget guitars. The stuff I had to work with as a kid (60's) compared to what is out there today is like comparing a stone wheel to a Bugati,as far as low budget stuff goes.There were some gems obviously, but nothing like the choices these days. Which of the 3 would you suggest (OS20 , 30, 40)? I am looking for something with a wide range of sounds if that helps.

      I can relate to the bigger house…😎
      As far as the Monoprice offsets…the OS20 is setup like a Super Stat basically in an offset body…has some nice “quack” to it, along with some meat in the bridge. The OS30 and OS40 are similar, both have P90’s but the 40 has an alder body and more Jazzmaster style bridge/trem. I like my 40 and 20. It’s not got the rhythm circuit like the Squier Jazzmaster, but it’s pretty close in tone and a lot less expensive.

    Have to say I'm quite impressed out of the box. The extra $50.00 or so above the Cali Classic is noticable (came strung with D'Addario EXPs, for starters - and a double-action truss rod). Still, even though I'd read the specs, in my head I saw it as just an offset version of their super Strat. But it actually has a markedly different feel. Was not expecting that gloss neck! Finding it a *very* comfortable player so far. For all the little quirks and flaws I've gotten used to (pressure dings on the body, chip at the nut, questionable bridge setup, etc.), I still find these Monoprice guitars pretty delightful - and an absolute steal, imperfections and all. The care they clearly take in shipping makes a difference; in fact, they're the only budget instruments I'm comfortable not buying from Amazon. Fabulous review as always!

    I am writing to thank-you. I used to be in bands in my teens and twenties, but life got in the way. Because of your channel I bought a Monoprice Retro and a Route 66 V2, They are excellent guitars and I cannot imagine any inexpensive guitar manufacturer being as good as Monoprice. BTW - if you show their customer service your dings, they will take a few bucks off your purchase price and send it to you.
    I do have a question. What is an offset guitar? Why is it offset?

      @JimmyStewart1  Před 2 lety

      That’s so nice…I am writing back to thank you! Thanks for watching and commenting and taking the time to give me your input! It’s really appreciated! Monoprice has been doing a great job in putting out some very playable instruments at very affordable pricing. I did contact Monoprice (see my setup video on this guitar) and they did take care of me. Now…offset guitars are basically just guitar body shapes that are not symmetrical. Where one side of the body is not the same size as the other side. In theory, a Stratocaster style guitar is a “offset”…but the term usually refers to body types like the Jazzmaster, the Jaguar, the Mustang ect….hope that helps explain a bit.
      Thanks again for stopping in to the channel, and hope to see you here more often Sheldon! 👍🎸

    • @JimmyStewart1
      @JimmyStewart1  Před 2 lety +3

      Good eye Dixon! I noticed it after I did the review, and yes it was loose. I tightened it up after, and it seems to have corrected it. The set screw on that tuner was in at a slight angle. The sprout on this one is not horrible, so I think after I let it acclimate, when I set it up it should not be much of a issue smoothing them out. I was looking at the 66, but have yet to pull the trigger on one. I have a few LP’s already, and have a hard time justifying getting another 🤣

      @JimmyStewart1  Před 2 lety

      Good eye!! After tuning (which I edited) I was going to straighten it out, but didn’t want to stop the demo or the flow, so simply left it as it was and continued on. It was just a loose tuner screw, so I simply detuned after checking it out and straightened it out after I was done filming. When I go to set it up and restring, I will fix it and reset the screw. I was having a bit of fun, and the video was about a hour and a half long….So, a couple of small dings in the finish, a bit of fret sprout starting around the 10th fret, a loose tuner and dry finger board. Thanks for being attentive….the interesting part is the guitar still stayed in tune pretty well, even laying into the whammy bar a number of times!

    Surprised you didn't notice (and seemingly no commenters did) the top tuner rotated down out of place not to be in line with the others... pretty bad assembly error. Clearly not present on the photo behind the headstock on their site and no one would want the top 2 tuners jammed together to not be able to have clearance to turn, so a clear error to be fixed with a 2nd screw hole after proper rotation. A simple fix, doesn't affect playability, but clearly a significant QC error.

I would look at the 5-way before replacing. Could be just a loose connection, bad solder joint, a bit of cleaning May fix it right up! Hit it with a bit of Detox, and work it back/forth. Frets are easy….give it a little time to acclimate, then condition/clean up the board and smooth out the fret ends…I have a number of setup videos here on the channel. There are a number of different pickups you could use for replacement, so really depends on the sound you are after and the $$ amount you want to spend 😎

    What kind of routing does this have under the pickguard? Is it routed just for the pickups it has or is it pool routed? Hi Sean…appreciate your stopping in and your questions. To be honest, I DO NOT know for sure, the answer to your routing question. I have never pulled the pickguard to check. I know that that Cali Classic (Strat) has a swimming pool route, but not sure on the offsets. The new FFJA Jazzmaster I just received and reviewed DOES have the rhythm circuit area routed out under the pg. Hey thanks for watching and commenting Chris! Yeah, it’s a bit of a blend really, sort of a Super Strat in a Jazz/Jag body. It’s actually a pretty cool offset…lots of fun to play.

    I decided to deck the tremolo on the OS20. Bummer they didn't drill two of the five the spring holes out. Will have to break out the drill.. I connected the other two springs into the larger holes, Now it has its own reverb tank.. haha.. But it does stay in tune really well..

    That pickguard looks sub-par and the fret board looks like it could use some conditioning. But for the price...........

    • @JimmyStewart1
      @JimmyStewart1  Před 2 lety

      Thanks so much for watching and commenting Mark….the pickguard still has the plastic on it, as I just removed it from the box for this review/demo. All the fretboards on every single guitar I have bought on line has required a good cleaning and conditioning, regardless of price. Nothing a good cleaning and setup won’t fix on this!

      Thanks so much Mark! I went with the OS20 due mainly to availability, color, configuration, price. I have plenty of P90 equipped guitars, but only one with the HSS configuration and none really like this one. I like quirky hybrids….😎

    I keep looking at the Monoprice Boardwalk (hollowbody) in "Transparent Amber" (orange).
    but it's hard to justify buying a (cough) 4th (cough) guitar when I can't play the (cough) three (cough) I already own.

      Thanks for watching and commenting Dane! The entire line of Monoprice Offset’s sell out fairly quickly, so you usually have to grab one when you see them in stock. I also have the OS40 and there is a review/demo here on the channel for it. Have a look when you get a chance. They were all “out of stock” for about a year until the last recent drop of them. Honestly, it’s not that critical to me. Most of your tone is really coming from the pups at the end of the day…both woods make for a good body. For me it’s mostly balance and weight…offsets can tend to weigh more, but I think more balanced in their feel due to the contours. Both my OS20 and OS 40 feel and play great! Not really any heavier than a standard Strat or Tele.

    I bought years back the wish. Ibanez lookalike. After much work like resanding the neck and neckheel. Potting the pickups, i ordered a mim strat bridge for it. Those thin metal bridges are too goodwillwalmart cheapo

    • @JimmyStewart1
      @JimmyStewart1  Před 2 lety

      Yep….they certainly have to use the least expensive hardware to keep the costs down, however I have been finding that the Monoprice stuff is usually quite decent considering the price point, and you could mod this to your hearts content and still be way ahead of the game in total cost!
