- I don't know if hydrogen cars are really the future of travel, but I sure hope we see more cars like the Mirai soon. Think of the all-new Mirai as an EV with a different kind of battery, because that's essentially what it is. Electric motors drive the Mirai but the power that feeds them comes from Toyota's latest fuel cell stack instead of a massive battery pack.

Great review. I don't pay attention to negative people. You were informative. I understand that people are all different and I respect that.
It's about time to put out a hydrogen fueled car. They should have done this 30 years ago but the oil companies or other evil power forces wiill not let it happen.
There are lots of good reasons and advantages to drive a hydrogen powered vehicles. Besides no more pollution that is emmited like the 97% of vehicles out there.... research it people.
The disadvantage right now is the high price which most people can't afford.
If the mirai is on the $30k range, I'm sure that there will be a lot of hydrogen filling station all over US.
Remember. .. if there is a demand, then supply will come.... so the main objective is to make the Mirai more affordable.
Toyotas are great cars! If other people bought other cars besides toyota, then that's their prerogative. But for me? I appreciate car manufacturers who are always trying to improve their products.
Tnx for ur review. .. RA
Very well said. Those with a lack of vision in seeing the future unfold are usually the ones who listened but with the full attention span of a gnat or even try to finish the whole video.
Does Alex have to repeat the Geo Metro naysayers when the Prius first came out- and where is the Geo Metro now?
When the next generation of Hybrids and EVs started becoming more prolific a decade ago, you heard the naysayers boasting how their Hemi engines got more fuel range and that it was more expensive to even begin building the infrastructure but by the time the cheapest Tesla was even presented last year the monolithic recharging stations were popping up through the country like mushrooms.
Advocates of CRT TVs hated the first appearances of Plasmas and LCD flat screens and how ugly they hung from the wall and that there was no need to have them yet where can you see CRTs anywhere now? Extinct within ten years.
As far back as the 60's, people who are afraid to change, were making fun of Japanese transistor radios and electronics. Avid fervent followers who preferred flashy but crappy performance cars like the Vega made fun of Honda motors, comparing it to their lawn mowers. Yet by the 80's the "big five" dominated the industries of design, transportation, electronics, finances, nano tech and fashion.
I will give an A for those who need attention through negativity. They will disappear in 15 minutes, while the rest of the world goes forward.
I financed mine in April and drive it 36 freeway miles round trip to work. Get a test drive, especially if you are a Californian near fueling stations, at this time there are 20 statewide. California is aggressively building the infrastructure with the help of First Element Fuels, Aire Liquide, Toyota and Honda. Hydrogen sourcing is starting out with natural gas and moving more toward solar, wind, biomass, and electrolysis. I am so happy to be an early adopter.
TheInspectorMark How is it a year later now? I'm looking forward to seeing this in my area - super interesting.
i was this close to getting one 🤏 because of the $15,000 fuel card that comes with a car that costs $12k cpo.
and then the salesman tell me it’s costs $70 to refuel and realistic range is 225-250 miles. NOPE. A chevy bolt charge costs about $10-12 worth of electricity to go that range.
As a delivery driver.. I would burn through 15k worth of fuel in about 20 months.. nope 4 seater car, seats don’t fold down, mere 180 HP too many compromises..
It's funny how much tesla fans hate fuel cell technology, much like Apple adepts hate alternative in any forms
Because it literally makes no sense in terms of efficiency and/or economics. You’re adding extra steps and costs by taking electricity that could be put straight into a battery and, instead, using it to produce another consumable product. Would you rather put $1 into your bank or convert that $1 into $.50 and put that in your bank account instead? It’s the same concept. The ONLY upside to fuel cells is the refueling time and even that is becoming a non-issue with charging times coming down.
And it’s not Tesla fans that hate fuel cells, it’s literally 95% of EV owners. The chief engineer that BUILT this Mirai said that battery EVs make more sense than FCVs. So yea...there’s a good reason to hate them.
@@babakgilbert You are missing the biggest point here.
Even today majority of Electricity is produced by burning fossil fuels.
The by product is harmful gasses. Not to mention disposing used batteries.
The by product of this technology is water.
I believe that the future of automobiles is going to be both EV and FCVs.
ATM the FCV technology is very expensive but so was EV long time ago. In mass production FCV will get cheaper as time goes by.

This guy speaks fantastically. His brain is definitely firing on all cylinders. Great review.
No his brain is running on all 450 proton exchange membranes of the stack.
If the tank holds 5kg and it's around $15/kg, thats $75 to go just over 300 miles. If it was a Prius it would use about 6 gallons, or $20. Great technology but hydrogen would need to come down quite a bit and it's not necessarily all that clean.
Please do cover how the hydrogen fuel cell engine works!
This car actually looks amazing. Even the new prius is starting to grow on me it's like they took a retro-futuristic design and made it more modern.
Thank you, Alex!! You have a created an extremely interesting review of an amazing technology! Awesome! Reposting it!
Great video a always. Like the new graphics, very informative and will make it easier to compare vehicles going forward.
Great review. Thanks.
Very cool you got to review this! I wanted one, but I only have 1 hydrogen station near me (40 miles away) can't have a single point of failure. Love the front styling not the rear though.
great video Alex
I actually got to see one of these during a trip to LA last year. It’s a very unique looking car. It’s not good looking, but it’s unique, something I could own as a special car.
I NEED MORE INFO ON FUEL CELL Stack!
LOL
COOL VIDEOS MAN!
After a short drive of the FCX at LAIAS 2009, I was sold on hydrogen as the way forward. And as beautiful as the Model S is, I'm not keen on BEVs. I'm not willing to wait 30 mins for a charge halfway between SF and LA. In an ideal world, we'd have an Apollo-era program to build out hydrogen fueling stations nationwide.
Great videos!
Great vídeo, lots of info.
So he said it was $16.58 per kg of hydrogen at the pump....and that it holds a total of only 5kg, right? So that would be $83 to fill it up. And he also said that if you treat it gently, you can get 312 miles out of it. That doesn't sound very economic.
Consider my 2010 Pontiac Vibe has a 13 gallon tank....gets about 24 miles per gallon on average....which surprisingly enough comes out to a total 312 miles per tank. At about $3 per gallon of gas, a full tank only costs $39.
And a new Prius will get close to 3 times the mpg as my Vibe (60+ MPG).....which means it can go 312 miles for almost a third of the cost....$13 or so.
Seems like the fuel cell isn't that much of a bargain when it comes to cost per mile....oh, and the car costs close to 60k too?
Great review as always Alex, when are you doing a tesla s or x?
Love it looks fantastic.
Very good review..
Hi Alex, I always enjoyed your review of EV or Hybrid, but I wonder why you never reviewed the Telsa Model 3. Hope ou will consider doing one. Thank you for always doing a great job.
Just got this car with 26k miles for 13k out the door, and a 15k gas card. We live near several stations, and currently the newest, biggest station in CA so it made sense for us. Pretty decent car so far, rides nicely with a good interior as Alex mentioned. It does feel very futuristic and makes me wonder if H2 market could ever make a dent in the battery market.
How are you liking it 2 months later? Any trouble fueling up? I’m thinking about purchasing one as well for a similar price and same 15k gas card
At 13:14, those noises you refer to under acceleration is the compressor running (it is effectively an electrically driven supercharger) it is necessary to supply sufficient oxygen to the stack under heavy load (btw, I am a Mirai owner who drives it 103 miles per day).
This car paid for itself. I work in the gig economy part time and compared to my gasoline car, this saved me a lot more money!
Alex, Your review on the Mirai is excellent and comprehensive; however, it is time to update it asToyota has dropped the lease price to $349 from $499. Also, the California rebate of $5,000 is available again. Thanks for the best reviews on cars you have been doing.
BTW, I just picked up a Mirai as well as a fourth generation Prius Eco. They both are excellent, even when compared to Lexus.
mark l.
Great review. These hydrogen cars are definitely the future of personal transportation. They don't take hours to recharge, and they aren't powered by burning coal to send power through the mains. I would love to buy one of these, but I live in Tennessee, and would have to pretty much get a massive fuel tank installed in the backyard. Hopefully hydrogen cars will get popular enough to have filling stations in more places than a few cities in California.
Also, any plans to look at Honda's second generation hydrogen car?
Congrats for your Soul EV. Welcome to the club. Regarding the time to fill up, your right, it shorter than a CHADEMO on my Soul. Buy I don't have to stand a side and wait. I can got buy some stuff, go to restroom and I'm not afraid to let my 9 year old boy operate the station. Thank for that very informative video. It did not change my mind. EV for personal or small car and maybe hydrogen for large delivery trucks.
Good Job!
Great review. Yes, please produce a video on how this engine works. Natural gas powered cars never really took off. Perhaps hydrogen fueling stations will. Congratulations on your Kia Soul EV purchase. I know this has been done to death, but how about a video on your perspective on daily/long term EV ownership? And another congrats to your "new" job in San Jose. You previously worked in the Burlingame/Millbrae area, right?
Thanks for the review! If I had to look at the interior of that car everyday, I think I'd choose to walk.
$70 bucks to fill the tank. You’ll definitely be walking
I'm very excited with the advent of these hydrogen powered vehicles. Clean burning. No emissions. No reliance on oil companies. Sounds fantastic! Let's hope it really catches on and becomes mainstream.

Great review as always. I'd like to know how a fuel cell stack works!
do you blink
Toyota is already considering dumping Hydrogen for the consumer market. Hydrogen can't compete on fuel cost and especially vehicle cost. Even when compared to a Pure EV BEFORE any State & Federal incentives.
me too

I wonder if you could also comment on the sound system when doing these reviews? It might seem minor but I know many car enthusiasts who are interested when making a purchase.
The mirai has a 1.6 kwh traction battery as well, its a hydrogen electric *hybrid*. You could swap out the hydrogen gear with a gas generator and gas tank, and it would still function. So don't mislead your audience saying this is not a hybrid. If it were not a hybrid, it would be just a fuel cell stack directly electrically driving the motor, without a large capacity battery, and without regenerative braking.
Wow, that grill.
Very intrigued by the technology though it will likely be posthumous for me by the time Hydrogen gets to NY in any meaningful way.
I vote for a video on the stacks (no hand drawing please, Alex).
Good idea to demo the fillup!
Once there is more stations available this would be a great car choice
VTA (Valley Transportation Authority) has at least 50 or so Mirais. It's located at highway 237 and Zanker Rd. in N. San Jose. Just a couple miles from my house and Alex's office.
i like the car design
You have the hood open referencing the stack. But the stack is under the seats.
I like the design oddly
with successive generations, this will be much superior tech to existing batteries
I was wondering how safe are they in a crash or a hydrogen leak?
Hydrogen filled Airships were known to go up like fireballs and they did not have gas under 10,000 psi of pressure.
Also, what about the risk from the storage tanks at the filling stations.
Alex, please do a review on the all new E class, I just ordered one, will deliver on November.........desperately need your opinion.
The :fool cell stack" is located under the front seats and not under the hood. What is under the hood is all the gear for the Power Control Unit.
As implied at 2:15 - later corrected at end of video
What kind of cat have you got? Please include her in one of your future reviews! Thumbed up.
i know this question is not related to this video Alex, but if you could choose one of those three (mustang, camaro, charger ) as a daily driver , which one would you choose and why ? this will help me so much with my next purchase, keep up the great work and thanks
Don't know how your pull it of, but your reviews are so "relevant" it puts others to shame. Very cool vehicle and I agree with your comparison to the 1 Gen Prius - it will only get better.
i want one ! please send more info on fuel cell design.
Hi Alex. Please do a review for nissan quest 2017 or above model
Great review Alex. Can you get your hands on a 17 Accord Hybrid? I would like to see if it's worth getting over a used 14-15.
Get a used 2015 in the touring trim and save $6,000 - $8,000. Not a big fan of the exterior design refresh anyway.
The windows you open for the "Drive" portion of your video can be weird, if not somewhat fun to visually play with. For instance; if I take in the visuals from the upper right (forward) window and at the same time take in the lower left (forward) window, I immediately find myself feeling like you're steering into the oncoming lane! And finally, taking into view the 'steering' window watching you steer into the corners and the like makes it like a video game! Kind of suicidal in a way, but fun because I know you're not hurting anyone - including yourself. whew...
Nice office!
I’ve just bought a Mirai .!
the deal is 371 mo+ 1000$+ trade(1,500$)
Plus the plan is 15,000$ of hydrogen fuel ⛽️ plus sticker carpool+ 5000 rebate + care care
This is interesting and I do like the car but not sure if it will really catch on
I do applaud Toyota for making this. To me this is a realistic future solution even if there is a push for ev's only. Really amazing technology in this car. Good job Toyota!
Alex, do you like the instrument cluster up on the dashboard or on the drivers side? Because for me, I like it on the drivers side and not on the dashboard because it would be pretty hard to see for the driver. But if it was on the drivers side, then it would be clearer and easy to read for the driver.
Congrats on the Soul EV! EV owners FTW!
Nice review, informative and best of all imagery is excellent. One remark, metric system is superior to the Imperial system and even the Imperials don't use it anymore. Its strange as you are into tech and in US Congress and scientists have switched since the 70's.
So this is about $80 too fill up (carries 5 kg, he only need 2 at the time.) A regular midsize sedan would be around $35 to fill up. Economies of scale, and competition, would help in the future
Very Expensive to fill compared to EV's or Gas.
If your financing or leasing then you wouldn't have to worry. Toyota gives you a card for free fueling for 3 years or 15k worth of fuel whichever comes first. You won't be paying fuel for 3 years,
+Ness Rosenbrad Hydrogen concept is great until you factor in the cost.
I think that this car is nice....Toyota is paving the way for the future....
I love it
can you talk about maintenance between ev and hydrogen vehicle ?
Alex, please let us know how fuel cells work, in greater detail. Some of your viewers are nerds (like me) and I appreciate these things :-)
Thank you.
Can you review 2017 vw gli
Good review. Just didn't like that it only has 4 car seats. I was also shocked when it was ~$16 for 1kg. They need to convert that to gallons wise. xD
Dear automakers, please make your alternative energy vehicles look like their gasoline/diesel counterparts. No need to make them look like robots. Thank you. Sincerely, everyone.
The hydrogen station is near his office and my house. That's in N. 1st Street & Brokaw in San Jose.
Do make a video on Fuel Cells. I wanna know what I don't know yet.
For fuel efficiency, what is the cost (dollars per mile)? Is it cheaper than a regular car with similar size?
I had to give this video a like... the front is great but the back no way.
what is in the blank space below the hvac controls. Just what seems like a lot of nothingness covered in the glossy black.
Also, Alex, could you please mention if the glove compartments are lockable and have a light or not. You never mention that and I think that's a nice, but very often overlooked feature.
I would be interested in know what it costs and what it's like to maintain one of these? And I don't just mean on gas, but I understand it can only be taken to a few shops to be looked at so I'm curious as to what that's like
Dear thia mirai use gas hydrogen to charging battry ?
I would buy one but honestly my 2011 Volvo s60T6 AWD polestar gives me 325 miles at full tank. Right now with gas close to $5 dollars in San Diego California i fill it up with almost $75 dollars from empty to full tank. A Mirai hydrogen takes 5kilograms at a cost of $16 dollars per kilogram. Now am here scratching my head and realizing that am better off at keeping my gasoline car that fills up faster and gives me the joy of having over 300hp and have the benefits of eco mode or sports mode and keep me close to 300 miles with full tank. I was expecting more mileage from the Mirai but I guess not.
can you show us the water release
Does anyone know the requirements for serving the clarity? no oil change? check for leaks? How much to rotate tires? brakes? thanks
Throw some Polymer L-ions as its flooring and make it a plug in hybrid between electric and fuel cell.
Unfortunately I’ve never had higher than 275 miles range on my Mirai and 80% of the time 250 mile range. For my commute that means filling up 2x a week instead of 1x. That’s the average of 4 Socal stations
4:00 - Did you fall over at the end of that shot?
maintenance cost?
it better than on the newspaper
My country has no hydrogen station. How danger the hydrogen is? Safety measure?
When did Linus from Lost start a CZcams channel?
i live right down the street from this station
I like your videos man, but, where are your reviews on Tesla? I don't see a single one.
So how do you charge this?
I wish this has a hatchback version.
how it does compare to the New prius prime in your think? since toyota claim 600miles on the prime.
💖 Toyota
On Toyota's website they say it comes with 3 years of free fueling for finance and lease.
Really? That's amazing
Not really if you plan on owning the car for 10 years. The car is twice as expensive as a new Chevy Volt, and costs 1.5 times more to top off. How much money do you really need to spend getting from point A to point B? I thought we were trying to save money and the environment. Hydrogen production does not help the environment, and the car is as expensive as many luxury cars...
Randy Sullivan Seck This car shouldn't be bought. Just lease it for 3 years then take it back then lease the newer version again.
Ness Rosenbrad Leasing... isnt exactly how you build wealth...
Randy Sullivan Seck Rich people lease believe it or not.
how much to fill up with hydrogen
I'd like to understand fuel cell stacking.
Not keen on the front end style and roof line angle from the side view is unusual, but not in a good way !
This is so much better looking than the Prius and I have to say that it's good looking
For all those who hate the design. I like it its daring and different.
where's the trunk comfort index? lol
I like the way it looks and hope that other manufacturers will follow suit. We are a long way from having plenty of hydrogen stations but you could have said that not long ago with electric. Hydrogen makes more sense from an environmental perspective than electric currently does. After all the majority of electricity comes from either natural gas or coal.
For everyone whining about the cost of the car and of the fuel, everything costs more when any new technology comes out. You have to start somewhere. Cost of both FC vehicles and fuel will fall with increased scale of production. Remember the first flat screen TV introduced by Philips? $15,000 for a 36 inch screen. What do you pay for a screen that size now (and a much improved one at that)?.
