    Daniel's an interesting guy after my own heart. It kinda went "off road" there for a bit with that whole robot grading epiphany, but then I've never been a big fan of grading services anyhow. Apart from maybe proof sets slabbed stuff in lucite sarcophagi just bores me somehow. But next stop is definitely his channel. So, thanks for the tip!

  • @ltcol2005
    @ltcol2005 Před 2 lety +1

    i agree that the TPG services should explain why something was cleaned etc but it is idealistic to think so because they are taking so much time to grade and return coins now. what do you think it would be like if they had to go into some synopsis on each coin.? you would have to wait double the time now to get coins back. I just don't see them in any teaching mode. very unrealistic they would ever do something like this.

      sounds evil but I think this happens a lot

    @KSASTAMPS Před 2 lety +2

    I really enjoy listening to Daniel, but I completely disagree on grading: if you think machines would improve coin grading, I think that is completely fanciful. Every grading system requires that a continuum be split into discrete units. For example, certain characteristics make for a technical circulated grade of Good , then a VG, F, etc. Same with the MS scale running 60 to 70. This process can be made objective for MOST of the way. So, for example if one dealer calls a coin Good and another Extra Fine, then at least one dealer is wrong there. After 60 years of development, coin grading is reasonably precise. But here is the conundrum: coins have different factors: eye appeal, strike, lustre, etc that are slightly inherently subjective. There's enough play here such that if you took 10 experienced dealers into a room and had them each grade 10 mint state silver dollars, there's no question that there would be a +/- one point variance in the result. This would not be so bad except for the extreme variance in pricing for one point differences on the scale. This coupled with the fact that a certain number of coins are going to be "straddlers" such as a strong MS63 or is it a low-end MS64? Well, if the MS63 values are $100 and the MS64 is $400, then that is a big problem. And further compounded by CAC with the green sticker, or PCGS & NGC with the "plus" grading--which implies that the graders can consistently differentiate a 1/2 point difference on the scale. This is absurd because the stories of the grading company itself reversing opinions by 1 point (and even 2 points in the extreme) are numerous. Let's be honest here: if the grading companies cannot consistently differentiate an MS63 from an MS64, what hope is there that they can be "on the money" with an MS63+ grade? The problem with machine grading thus becomes obvious: think about Football--we don't really argue with the referee about whether he should spot the ball at the 50 yard line or the 40 yard line. We argue whether a player made the last 3 inches to make the first-down marker. If we are really doing subjective hairsplitting on coin grades, then how will a machine improve that result? Simple answer: it can't, because very experienced dealers are seeing the coin coin in slightly different ways, and there is no way to insist that one dealer is necessarily better at this than another. Perhaps I like coins with a strong lustre and white blast, and perhaps you like toning and a strong strike, etc.

    good luck using artificial intelligence for grading coins. the TPG's would be out of business! they did a great service weeding out crooked dealers who graded coins anyway they wanted. CAC went a step further to ensure not all same graded coins are equal. grading coins is a human process not an artificial intelligence one. everyone should be aware when buying coins including dealers. don't blame the TPG's went you send in a coin, and it comes back with a problem. you took a chance and lost. suck it up. stop crying about how I could have bought a cleaned coin. don't let your ego get in the way. you made a mistake. learn from it and move on.
