    Interesting convo, Daniel. Edwin made a video about this the other day that was also interesting. Basically contemplating the long-term future of ABU & old school cards. We have differing opinions about the net effect of nostalgia wearing off. A lot of the people u expect to sell them in 5-10yrs have a nostalgia & personal connection to these old cards that new collectors won’t/don’t imo. Some other comments I see here so far are also consistent with my perspective tbh.

      yes, in 5 to 10 years, a lot of us will keep them, i guess this idea of we will die with them holds a lot, but I'm predicting a lot of unforeseen circumstances that will force this. But I maybe wrong!

    I'm not sure I ever see sports cards dying. I think some of the 'all time' cards will be a huge thing forever. While Mickey Mantle rookies are even bigger now than they were in the 90s, they were still relatively expensive then. I can see the exact same thing with Michael Jordan, Kobe, Brady and some of the all time greats, 20-30 years from now

    Very hard to predict how it all plays out, however... I started playing mtg during '95 so after revised had released and was the big thing. Learning about A,B,U but having no money to get some of those cards was off the table , so just a dream one day.. Well that day has happened after you get older and have money. I think it could be a repeating occurance. Even todays newer players all learn about power 9 and iconic cards from the 90s. As fans of the game, even newcomers, the most iconic old cards will be a dream to aim for. Iconic cards will exchange hands as always, but I dont think any major selloff just happens for that stuff.

    I kept looking around the background to see what was lurking around in the water.
    It looked like a massive Ray swam by in the last few seconds.
    Dan share a video of what's in the water ha ha.

    Theory: If they reprint the Power 9 as super mythic rares and legalise them in more tournament play, this will lead to a short term decrease in vintage cards value but then rise again as some of the newer players get into vintage cards. Discuss!

    The CZcams channel reserved investment is saying a similar thing. The main generation of collectors will age out of the hobby and there won't be enough people to offset the supply.

  • @CrosswaIk
    @CrosswaIk Před 5 měsíci

    Yeah you're right. The next 20 years of Magic will see the retirement years of everyone who started in the early to mid 90's.
    Most of us are going to need to cash out sooner than later and similar to baby boomers in the workforce, I don't see another group waiting to take up the mantle.

    If Hasbro decided to reprint all the cards or even the old duel lands that's on the no reprint list then I could see the game and many people's collections be not worth alot in the future. I think magic in a way is heading in a direction that's like DnD. It's starting to cater to a younger audience and is starting to get simplified. Hence the Doctor Who sets and LOTR( not my cup of tea but only my opinion). I started playing magic in 1999 around the Urzas saga and it was the best, I still play pre modern to this day. As far as 5 to 10 years it's hard to say, it's all comes down to what Hasbro has in store for the game.

      interesting points. so what makes the trend grow in next 5 to 10 years then? what can hasbro do to change this?

  • @MTGUnpacked
    @MTGUnpacked Před 5 měsíci

    I can see a gradual sell-off as older collectors leave the game permanently, or a more sudden one if we see another Magic 30 situation. The vintage stuff appeals more to collectors or nostalgic players rather than people who just play the latest and greatest. As long as Magic keeps going, there'll always be new players. The more interesting question is how many of those will turn into collectors or old-school format players? The future vintage buyers need to come from somewhere!

    • @vintagemagic
      @vintagemagic  Před 5 měsíci

      Great points! Do you think there will be more old school collectors as time goes on?

      @@vintagemagic I think so! Saying this as a 40-something player/collector who wasn't involved in the early days of Magic but still enjoys the vintage cards and is looking to collect more in future years👍

    • @ryanday633
      @ryanday633 Před 5 měsíci

      @@vintagemagic in my opinion no. I say this because I don't think younger players today see value in the old cards. Formats like standard and modern just cater to so many more people. I'm 35 and I play legacy and vintage formats only and I'd say right now those formats are healthy. I could see gen x and older millenials selling off there collections when the time is right but I don't see a younger audience picking up vintage cards anytime soon. Eventually Legacy, vintage and old school 93/94 will be a thing of the past.

  • @215Daniel
    @215Daniel Před 5 měsíci

    I don't know who's gonna be buying boomer cards (ABU) because I don't know anybody at my LGS that wants them. I live in a top 7 US market and our biggest LGS doesn't even run weekly legacy events anymore. 5-10 sounds about right to exit those cards - while there's still a demand for them by other older gen-X and young boomers.

    • @vintagemagic

      What is the market you're in?

    • @DrJack144
      @DrJack144 Před 5 měsíci

      That doesn’t shock me tbh. There’s a nostalgia element that some people simply don’t have with these old cards. I started playing in 1995, and even for me I have little/no nostalgia for sets like Legends & Antiquities. I’ve observed a bit of an echo chamber effect in vintage/graded MTG Facebook groups (before I became inactive in them) as one example. The current holders/collectors view things one way. People who don’t hold or aren’t interested view it a different way. Will be interesting to see how it all plays out for sure.

    Def disagree with this. People will mature into the hobby, and more and more of the RL items will be lost/destroyed due to attrition: lost, accidents, thrown away by accident, stolen by people who don't know the value, damaged by play, pets, and children, natural disasters, lost in the mail via transactions, and more. There's an infinite number of reasons that stock will dwindle and that the number of mtg players will continue to grow world-wide.

    • @vintagemagic
      @vintagemagic  Před 5 měsíci +1

      I like your points and valid! My major concern is will the collections that come in the market, which is a lot as we age...will it be consumed by other collectors, as the current state of mtg is not as strong as it was?
