    I for one am doing a restructuring of my collection. I have a bunch of chaff and bulk rares that won't see the light of day in decks and wanted to get into collecting a "master set" of cards, starting from Neon Dynasty and going forward. The plan is to trade most, if not all of the chaff cards, for credit for picking up the singles that I still need to complete my NEO binder.

      That’d be a great topic, and just niche enough to stand out from other MTG content creators imo.
      Your video on “how to store your collection” is what inspired me to start the master set collecting idea by using a quadrow binder and sorting by collector number. I tweaked it a bit by going for all non-showcase versions of cards, tokens, the art cards, and the made-for-commander cards. (Which I was surprised are labeled separately.) A quadrow fits them all with a page to spare!

    I have a valuable MTG collection, 8 of power 9, library, many duals, foreign black border duals etc... abyss, moats, so much. Played since dark/revised. I haven't played in 20 years and would love to sell the collection, but I'm afraid of getting ripped off

    • @beyondthedeckbox
      @beyondthedeckbox  Před rokem +3

      The most important thing you can do to avoid getting ripped off is to find out how much each of the cards are worth. Use TCGPlayer and look at recent sales. That is your number. You also will need to take into account condition. If you played with these cards, assume your going to get the LP/MP/HP pricing. (lightly, moderately, or heavily played). Since your collection has so many high dollar cards, I would suggest separating out the ones that are worth more than a couple bucks from the rest and focus on those. There are some Facebook groups you can join that deal in high dollar MTG cards. And just remember if you go through a store, you'll be offered around 50% of their worth in cash, but if you sell through a Facebook group or a marketplace like TCGPlayer, then you'll get closer to the full value minus fees.
      But as I said, knowing what you have, and the condition it's in is the most important thing you can do to avoid getting ripped off. I hope that helps!

    So I had an emergency come up and sadly having to sell my Digimon collection. I used TCGPlayer to price it out, came out slightly over a grand, and I was wanting to sell for around seven-hundred. However I've had a seller or two say my collection is nowhere near this amount? How can I verify my prices are correct? Or could I possibly be getting lowballed or schemed?

    • @beyondthedeckbox
      @beyondthedeckbox  Před rokem +3

      If you are hearing this from multiple sellers I doubt they are scheming you. How much less are they saying it’s worth?
      A lot of things could be at play here. What are the condition of the cards? If you are looking at near mint (NM) prices but your cards are lightly played (LP) that could affect it. Also, these sellers may be referring to what they are willing to pay you for the collection. If you’re not selling these to collectors or players yourself and you are selling to a store or reseller, they are going to give you around 50% of the worth of the collection. ($500 dollars in your situation.) Because they want to turn around and sell it for the full worth. They want to make money on the deal and this is how they do it. What you get out of it is you get money now and you don’t have to fuss with listing and selling each card. That saves you a lot of time.
      Now it might be something else too, like the cards you priced might be different printing than the ones you have, etc. not saying that is the case, but it’s something to check.
      Hope that helps!

    I accepted a tip for a home theater install in about 14k cards. Homeboy didnt want to deal with it anymore. Thank you for this info. I know i have 4-5 full 2016-2017 original decks on my hands. I used to play Pokemon competitively and Yu-Gi-Oh semi. MTG is new to me and i have no clue what I'm looking at. Ive been sorting, idk if holos are worth a damn but i have a fat stack and most of what i have is sleeved in a trashbag, (not bent or damaged) but im just not familiar with the market. Ive been sorting through for 2 and a half weeks. Do you have any recommendations on seperating those higher price cards from those basics i have no knowledge of?😅 Do I need to just break down and sell the lot or am i now an MTG guy trying to part and parcel?

    • @beyondthedeckbox
      @beyondthedeckbox  Před rokem +1

      If you want a quick way to sort them, pull out any that have the holofoil stamp at the bottom. The set symbol will be gold or red (rare or mythic). Assuming you don't have any cards older than 2015, then the ones without the holostamp are bulk. (This will be true for any foil cards as well. 99.9% of the cards from that era that are worth anything are rare or mythic with the holostamp. Older cards, like 90s card, play by different rules.) That should get you to a good place to know how many card you actually might have that are worth something. The bulk cards can just be sold in a bulk buy. Depending on how many rares and mythics you have will help you decide whether you want to go through the effort to look them up and sell them, take them to the store, or throw them into the bulk buy. I hope that helps! Thanks for watching!

    dam, seems like i have to do some sorting again. ._.
    I want to pick up magic again after about 17-18 years of "abstinence".
    But i really dont want to be a collector again. So i decided to sell my collection with all decks etc. and buy 1 deck i can play with.
    It seems like eth is the most popular format so a eth deck seems to be the way.
    After watching about 20 hours of videos, about edh powerlevels and stuff, i decided to sort my card collection to not have it sell like bulk.
    I sorted into 5 categories (allways average prive taken from cardmarket):
    below 1€;
    1 to 5€
    5-10€
    10-30€
    and above 30€
    After watching this video it seems like i have to sort the 1-5€ cards into 1-2€ and 2-5€.
    Is that really needed?
    Do stores count 2€ cards as bulk?

    • @beyondthedeckbox
      @beyondthedeckbox  Před rokem +1

      It depends on how you are planning on selling the 2-5 range cards. If you are selling them locally, then I think your method is fine. You'll probably get good prices. And even if you are doing a buylist via an online store, then you should be absolutely fine. I would just try and do as many of them as you can in one go, so you can keep the postage and packaging costs down.
      But if you are selling them individually online through a site like CardMarket, then it changes things because fees and packaging. Selling a card at 1.50 suddenly becomes only 0.60 profit after packaging, postage, transaction fees, etc. Especially when it's buylist price is probably closer to 0.80 or even higher if you do store credit. Hope that helps!

      @@beyondthedeckbox Thanks for the reply.
      Seems like no store (local ~50km range) is buying cards at the moment.
      I guess all are pretty stocked when people sold stuff during pandemic time.
      But i found a private collector which buys collections to sell them for profit.
      I am gonna meet him tomorrow.
      Hope he is not some kind of "i give you 30% of the worth"-guy.
      Some good stuff in there like 2 NM-EX gilded drake; foil NM sliver overlord and a NM sliver queen.
      So i should some money out of it..... i hope ...

      @@beyondthedeckbox The trade is finished so i thought i might give you an update so you can judge me. :)
      I feel like the store conveyed me to a very competent guy.
      We sat down and pricechecked every card above 1€ average price and sorted them into minimum price piles from 1 to 9.
      If a card min price was 0,5€ then one 0,5€ card was added to bulk and one to the 1€ pile.
      Every card 10€ and above was checked for authenticity per green dot method and then judged by condition. (a middleground price was noted for each of them)(and luckely no counterfits in them :) )
      All numbers were added and he payed me 70% of that.
      It surpriced me how much i got out of it. I thought i will get about 800€ if i am lucky, but it became ~1200€. :D
      The best thing about beeing a pessimist is to get positively surpriced regularely. :)

    - Trust nobody
    - People will steal
    - Plenty of folks caught cheating in shops i've played in.
    - You will be taken for a ride when players discover you don't know what you have.
    - Any card stores near me that I bring boxes to want me to just donate well over 1000+ cards. (yeah, they don't even offer me money. They say the cards are worth pennies, which is likely true for the vast majority, and I should just donate them... even though pennies add up. )
    I'm selling my cards because this community has just been awful, from the players to the businesses. I've played in 3 shops near me, and 2 at various colleges my friends went to, they've all been similar...
    They say hang out with folks you aspire to be like... Well I don't aspire to steal, I don't aspire to take advantage of others, and I don't aspire to cheat. Maybe there's money to be had in it in a purely business perspective, but the community isn't for me.
    Obviously experiences may vary. Plenty of folks in comments saying they had fun. But this video is proof that this community has huge problems.

      With cards from the very early days, you may have to go through them card by card since the set symbol is the same color across rarities and in many early sets there isn’t a set symbol. I suggest downloading the Dragon Shield app or the TCG Player App on your phone and you can use the camera on your phone to scan the cards and you will get a good idea of price. Important thing to remember though, it isn’t alway perfect and it might misidentify the set the card is from. But, it will give you an idea of the worth of the card. If the price is high, you can earmark that card to research individually. If the price is just a couple cents, then you set it aside in the bulk bin for now. I hope that helps!

      @@beyondthedeckbox Thank you! Its a start at least. I suspect my largest hurdle is going to be finding buyers that will give a fair price, the stores around me have a bit of a reputation of extreme low balling, And im not very into online sales. And things like my sealed Urza tournament pack have seemingly very very WIDE price ranges, looks like they are for sale for between $500 and $2000...
      I will definitely have to check those apps out though, probably faster than trying to look them up by name then matching the set by eye.
