BMW E90 M3 vs. Lexus IS-F | Driver Battles

  • We're back at Chuckwalla Valley Raceway for another episode of Driver Battles, this time featuring Scott Dukeshire and his 2011 BMW E90 M3 going head to head against Willem Drees and his 2009 Lexus IS-F. This isn’t Scott’s first time on Driver Battles. In 2018, he raced his Porsche 996 turbo to victory against an R32 Skyline GT-R. However, his competitor currently holds the naturally-aspirated front-wheel drive record at Chuckwalla in another vehicle. Both know how to get the most out of their cars, but who has the edge?
Starting with Scott, his M3 has seen a few small but impactful modifications. To help the 4.0L V8 engine breathe better is a Macht Schnell intake, along with a Megan Racing muffler. For stopping and cornering, he added Swift lowering springs and Project MU Club racer pads. Of course, it has new wheels and tires, as well, with Volk Racing ZE40 wheels and Nitto NT01 tires.
Willem’s IS-F is overall similarly upgraded to Scott’s M3, but with a few differences thrown in. Instead of an intake and exhaust, the IS-F has been given a Koyorad 48mm radiator to keep its V8 engine cool. His car has also seen upgrades to the suspension and brakes, with KW V3 coilovers, RR Racing lower control arm bushings and Project MW HC+ brake pads. On top of having Advan TC4 wheels, Willem is also running NT01s, so this should be a fair fight. The main difference between the two cars comes down to aero, with Willem having an Alpheyga GT4 carbon lip.
While the horsepower numbers between the cars are similar, with Scott’s M3 having 414 and Willem’s IS-F putting out 416, Willem has a decided advantage in torque, with the IS-F’s 317 lb-ft comparing to the M3’s 295. This one very well might come down to driver skill and cornering ability.

The M3 is actually like a race car , the way it bangs gears and the way the car handles, it’s a screamer and feels amazing. Love them both but I think the M3 has the edge over all . xuntopx - Diffs do make a difference but it is also very track dependent. That track is open and flat with quite flowing corners, little or no elevation change so no real advantage to be lost not having an LSD. The IS is like the C63 AMG, relies on cubic inches. There will always be people who say how there car beat some competitor in a similar or competitive car. In my experience the moment you go to the track and run your car once is the last time it remains stock.

I drove the ISF in the video here. Few things.
    - Yes, this ISF did NOT have LSD. That's for sure why it was so loose- for sure would have gone faster with one- but faster than the M? prob not.
    - Yes, I also drove the BMW and did a low 2:03 it was the faster car in the heat for sure.
    - I actually ran 2:05 first session but timing loop was off, F still woulda lost but it would have been closer.
    - I've also driven my stock ISF here and did a 2:02, so chuckwalla track conditions make times vary wildly.

Great video! I'm surprised nobody mentioned anything about the difference in model years though. If that had been a 2011 ISF against the 2011 M3, the ISF would probably have gone at least 3 second faster due to the Torsen LSD added to the ISF in 2010 and the major suspension changes for 2011. Those two changes made a 7 second (!!!) difference in the 2008 vs 2011 ISF's lap time around VIR. That's why you could see the 2009 ISF in the video had trouble putting power down out of the corners with its open rear diff and less than optimal 2008-2010 ISF suspension. Regardless, this was a fun video to watch and I thoroughly enjoyed it...love both of those cars.

Should have used a 2010+ isf they handle better with the limited slip differential.

I hope they bring the IS-F back. Guess won't be coming anytime soon with redesign of IS on the way even. Especially since they canceled development on the LC-F. If anything I prefer to see the IS-F being developed again.

It’s an 09.. 08/09 always loose, and are always, for some reason, the ones to go up against m’s on review. They don’t even have a diff. 10+ is the opposite. Sub 2.

Dude. Motor trend tested the last year ISF 2014 model and it’s set down the same exact last time as the M3 competition so please this lexus lost because it was the first model year before any updates.

E9x chassis (and I mean chassis not suspension) is one of a kind. It is one of the best balanced, earth planted chassis ever made, even on a stock suspension. So with a decent coil-over setup it can be impossible to compete it even with a faster car from the same segment.

They dont live Long i northern Europe, they simply rust to fast under, especially in the back area, where the driveline and suspension are mounted... So chassi may be balanced, but when the backwheels end up in the bumper, then it's going to the scrap yard, in 2022 was a 2009, a 2011 and one 2013 are demolished caused corrosion under in the back area. And that was Just in my local area, i Norway, Scandinavia. I choose Bmw, and they are totaly balanced, usually 50%/50%....✅👍😃

If u want to be quick as the m3 or faster in an Isf u gotta get the newer ones with the updated limited slip differential.
