  • This 2009 Audi A3 greeted us with a LOT of warning lights one morning. This is the first of 2 parts on diagnosing and fixing the fault.
    It's a 2009 Audi A3 1.9 TDi sportback, 8PA model code with approx. 173,000 miles.
The faults on the car were:
Red brake fault light with the message "Brake Fault! Drive carefully to the nearest workshop"
    Engine light on.
    ESP warning light on.
    ABS warning light on.
    Steering warning light on.
    Odometer not working.
    Speedometer not working.
    Fuel gauge stuck on full.
    Steering heavier than usual.
Not many problems then! A code scan with VCDS revealed a similar number of codes, which I go through in the video.
After the code scan, the video goes through:
    -Checking fuses.
-Checking power and earth connections to the ABS pump.
-Removing the ABS pump for repair.
    Sections
    0:00 Introduction to the problem
    1:23 Fault codes
    3:35 Checking fuses
    5:55 Remove battery
7:28 Remove airbox and battery tray
    11:30 Inspection of wiring harnesses
12:35 Testing power and ground connections
    14:43 Removing ABS pump
25:23 ABS pump out on the bench
Thanks for watching. Please consider subscribing to the channel if you haven't already.
Remember to join me for part 2, which will hopefully feature a fully fixed Audi.

I have the exact same problem on a 2010 1.2 tfsi. Only difference is that my fuel gauge stays working. The brake fault seems to appear after the engine is warmed up and been driven for a while. So it's not a permanent fault and it usually goes away after the car has sat for a night and cooled down, although yesterday it gave me the fault and i turned the car off for 5 minutes. When i started it again all the lights were off and it was normal again.
Thanks for the informative video Andrew, this will certainly help me with mine!

Had this for 12 months now, garage changed abs module, but it came back 6 months later. Now had 3 new sensors, break pads/disks fitted around, really have had enough of this car now.
Have even deleted codes whilst car is parked on a slope and then ragged the car and no codes appear(until ignition is switched off and you drive away again.)

Thank you so much for this video. I had this issue for 2+ years now. It would happen on wet terrain while hard braking or lately in random situations like driving uphill into a corner at 60+ mph. Worst thing is, I read online that after the fault code flashes the abs is off! Imagine having to brake to prevent an accident... I have been to an audi dealership in the past, they tried the "erase all codes" method and that didn't work. I will now talk to my local mechanic and see if he can take a look at the fuses and wiring harness. I think I'll even let someone check the whole pump out. There was little information about this topic online. This really helped a lot.

I have this message with the Start Stop. When the car turns off and then you push the clutch to start, when starting it show the message “Brake Fault. Drive to the nearest….”.
And then it dissapears. While driving i have nothing. With VCDS it shows no faults.
Sometimes when i have to brake the pedal goes very down.

Hi I have a 2018 audi a3 handbrake switch is flashing red had it plugged in at audi they say there is a fault on the wiring from handbrake switch to the abs pump do you know if all the wires from the electronic handbrake go to the abs pump plug? As I can find most of the same colours I tested for continuity and 3 of the wires are dead I just need to make sure that they are the same wires before I connect some temporary wires to see if it is infact a brake in the loom thanks

Hello Andrew I have a problem with my Audi A5 2009 when I turn on after some meters when I’m moving it shows me brake system fault contact workshop abc esp epc lights came on and the speedo drops to zero and stuck to zero. When I’m turn off and turn on the car after a while all the lights came on again. Any idea what’s going on

Hey, this is a great video. Mine is throwing a P0299 underboost code, but I've had the turbo vacuum/boost etc all checked.
I then relaised the brake pedal was going hard. My mechanic has replaced all the vacuum pies and it's still playing up. Would the most likely fault be the actual vacuum pump itself? The pedal is only hard when no pressure has built up e.g right after starting up or right after braking.
    Cheers,
    Ben

Just noticed you didn't check drivers side panel fuse SC2 terminal 15 supply to abs j104.?

      @AndrewFixes  Před 3 lety +1

D'oh! Can't believe I missed that one. Thought I'd checked everything so carefully but completely missed that fuse.
Thanks for letting me (and everyone else who watches the video) know.

Hi. Same issues on mine and i am thinking of sending it off for repair.
spoke to an auto electrician who said that in most cases it's just the plug that is damaged on the ecu, he soldered across something on the plug to fix it.
He said it can be repaired quite easily without taking off the full pump to send off.
Have you heard of this or know what he is referring to? thanks

    • @AndrewFixes
      @AndrewFixes  Před rokem

Interesting - I don't know what he is referring to but it sounds like he's encountered this problem a few times before. I guess you could access the electronics on the pump without removing the whole unit, but I think access would be quite tight. The repair on this one didn't take long when I sent it in, so I wouldn't be surprised if it was just a dry/degraded solder joint or two.

The simple easy one issue that can cause too many warning lights turn on ( ABS - ESP - Power steering etc ) sometimes is just Incorrect 4 tires pressure that’s being ignored especially on newest AUDI cars ! The first CHECK before going to somewhere else part’s But some ordinary ppl were going to dealer or mechanic and yeah you will be pushed to spend money for something that you can fix yourself with just basically easy without removing anything’s
I’m a noob but it’s just my first ordinary step aid

I have an Audi A3 1.9tdi 2008. this error comes on occasionally when the car skids or when I brake suddenly. after turning off the car, the error disappears and everything is normal. Does anyone know what I should change?

    • @AndrewFixes
      @AndrewFixes  Před 3 lety

Interesting, I'm not sure if the ABS unit can fail in different ways such that the odometer and speedometer would continue to work, or whether this is pointing to a different problem. It would be worth connecting up a scan tool to see if it can communicate with the ABS unit.

Get a Vcds scan done to find out why the abs lights are on in the first place.
