Audi A3 brake fault fixed! Part 2 - Audi A3 ABS pump replacement and bleeding with VCDS

  • The ABS pump has been repaired and it's time to fit it back in the car.
    This video starts with fitting the ABS pump back into the car. After that the battery is connected up on a temporary basis so the car can be started. Starting the car revealed that the brake warning light had gone off - good news! The engine light stayed on because the code causing that needed deleting with VCDS.
    Having verified the repair it was time to fit everything back properly and bleed the brakes. I tried doing a standard bleed (i.e. without VCDS) out of interest as much as anything. However this proved a little optimistic so I went on to do the Audi A3 ABS pump bleeding procedure using VCDS.
    All the warning lights went off after this repair and the brakes felt great.
    A very satisfying repair of this Audi A3 brake fault for a fraction of the cost of a new ABS pump.

    In case you wondered what those letter mean on the ABS Block, here you go -
    • HR - Hinten Rechts (Rear Right -RR)
    • HL - Hinten Links (Rear Left - RL)
    • VR - Vorne Richts (Front Right - FR)
    • VL - Vorne Links (Front Left - FL)
    • (DK/HL) HZL - Hauptzylinder Links (Master cylinder left)
    • (SK/HR) HZR - Hauptzylinder Rechts (Master cylinder right)
    In order to prevent mixing up the brake lines when the ABS module is removed, Bosch recommends colored cable ties to identify the brake lines, rather than identifying them with paint or markers, since the brake fluid may obliterate the paint or marker ink.
    • Connection RR - Green
    • Connection RL = Red
    • Connection FR = White
    • Connection FL = Blue
    A yellow cable tie on one of the two master brake lines could be used to avoid mixing them up too.

    • @AndrewFixes
      @AndrewFixes  Před 2 lety +1

      Hi Joe, thanks for the feedback. I decided it was better to get the original pump reconditioned for several reasons: firstly the used pump could develop the same fault as the original one, and this could happen quite soon after fitting it. Secondly, a used pump would need coding to the car. I suspect the warranty on the reconditioned pump would be better than on a used pump too. Hope you manage to get it sorted out.

    I had the same fault on my 2009 A3, just cleared the ABS fault codes and they stayed off after restarting the engine and a quick drive round the block testing engaging the ABS 3 times all ok. My wife said the brakes warning lamp came on after she braked hard avoiding an idiot in a beemer. I'm hoping it was just the pump valves sticking having not had the ABS engaged for a few years...missus does not race around.

    3. How many stages VCDS asking you to do ABS pump bleeding?
    Thanks

    • @AndrewFixes
      @AndrewFixes  Před 2 lety +3

      Hi, as I understand it the VCDS bleeding is mainly to get the air out of the pump, so yes just doing it on both front wheels covers both circuits of the braking system. I did a standard pressure bleed of the rear brakes (i.e. not using VCDS to activate the pump) after bleeding the pump. Removing the pump involves disconnecting the lines to all 4 wheels so I thought it made sense to bleed any air out of the rear lines too. I don't remember for certain but I think there were 10 cycles of bleeding with VCDS. Thanks

    • @AndrewFixes
      @AndrewFixes  Před 2 lety

      I decided to bleed the rear wheels as well. There shouldn't be much air in the rear lines but as the repair involves disconnecting the lines to all 4 wheels, there is likely to be some. The VCDS bleeding process is mainly for getting air out of the ABS pump.

  • @danielbob7769
    @danielbob7769 Před 8 měsíci

    It was really necessary to do abs bleeding for 10 times? I'm looking in the workshop manual for Mk5 and it says this:
    On vehicles with EDL, EDL/ASR or EDL/ASR/ESP, the brake
    system must be pre-bled when a chamber in the brake fluid reservoir
    is completely empty (for example brake system leaking).
    Pre-Bleeding
    - Connect -VAS 5234- or -V.A.G 1869- . ( this is their pressure tool and the reservoir adapter)
    Bleeding sequence:
    1 - Bleed left front and right front brake caliper together simultaneously.
    2 - Bleed left rear and right rear brake caliper together simultaneously.
    - With bleeder bottle hoses attached, leave bleeder valves open
    long enough that brake fluid exits without bubbles.
    Then the hydraulic unit must be bled again with the “Basic setting” function using the -VAS 5051- .
    Initiate basic setting (to bleed brake system):
    -VAS 5051- , ( Vcds in our case)
    - Then, brake system must be bled normally.
    So, from what I understand, based on these informations, you do a basic bleeding but with 2 calipers at the same time, after that you bleed abs pump via vcds and final step is a normal bleeding, every caliper individually.
    Am I right? From what I read in the manual, this sequence is applied to abs pump change too, not just a leaking break system or anything else

    • @AndrewFixes
      @AndrewFixes  Před 8 měsíci

      Hi, I don't know if the 10 times were completely necessary. This isn't a job I do often enough to have tried out lots of different options.
      Thank you for adding the bleed information you found. I think you've understood it correctly, but I'm not sure it would be a whole lot quicker than what I did in the video.
      What I can say is that after the multiple bleeding cycles, the brakes felt better than they ever had before.
