the drumming on this track is fucking amazing
Let a 54 old drummer jus' shake your hand mate!😀🤝🥁🤘🏻✌🏻
Sting

Vinnie is an under appreciated master
Especially considering he's playing against a different time signature in the vocals!
Perfect example of a drummer completely blowing your mind without “overplaying.”
I've been a drummer since the fifth grade back in 1984 and studied every style of music you could think of. Music is my reason for living. I can't put into words how good Vinnie Colaiuta is.
@@Joker-ig8im He's a beast on Megadeth's 'The System Has Failed'.
@@philliptaylor5229 Thank you. Haven't heard it. Will check it out tonight when I get home and can hear it on my Audiophile System!
They are all so great
Watch 13 year old Yoyoka play this and your mind will be blown again.
This is an absolute pop masterpiece. But it's also one of the greatest recorded drum tracks in pop music history. A doctoral dissertation could be written on Vinnie's performance.
Mr. Colaita is, indeed, one of the very best in the business. Creme de la creme. Makes the technically challenging look like child's play. There are only a few songs, especially in pop music, where the drum parts are so intricate and so central to the structure and fabric of the song as it is here. A masterpiece, indeed.
Sting is blessed to have worked with such awesome drummers. This guy is almost as good as Copeland
@@freebee8221 You mean Copeland is almost as good as Vinnie?
Love Copeland, but, we're talking probably the best alive, versus top 10, maybe top 5.
Now go hear Yoyoka play it...

its actually 5/4..
Holy cow, didn't realize that was him!
@@MaintainMundane It's 11/10 for me..

The cover is almost impossible😔for me
My son, who was a drummer for a college band, had difficulty playing 5/4. He perfected by practicing this song.
Put the snare on the 4 and the rest comes naturally
@@georgerussell2947 Basically becomes a compound of 3/4 and 2/4 - Everything's Alright from Jesus Christ Superstar has a similar feel, but with an extra hit on the 5

VINNIE!!
Ayo what a surprise!
Can we all agree on Master Colaiuta?
Sting at the peak of his powers in this era. Awesome.
Not only a masterclass in drumming from Vinnie Colaiuta, but I think this is one of Sting’s best songs ever (not that I think he’s ever written a bad one).
This recording session was all about superb songs.
I fully agree with you on this one my friend . 🎵🎶👌👌
Absolutely!! And Vinnie was one of my mayor influences on drums back in the 80’s!
Desert Rose has always been up there for me, but I do like this one too.
Best song of the best album.
I'm discovering this song in 2023 and man - what a track. Lyrics, chords, drumming, vocals - it's a a total masterpiece.
Agreed. Even the SOUND of the instruments. Those drums for example are so crisp, articulate, and punchy while sitting effortlessly in the mix. Don’t know of any other mix quite like it.
and the setting !!!!
The whole album, every song is a masterpiece. Because of the caliber of musicians he gathered it's by far his best album. Couldn't recommend it enough!
Thirty years on and it still hits the spot.
I don't think Sting has ever written a bad song.
Drumming masterclass!
This has a nice jazzy riff to it-an underestimated classic

There's so much going on in this song. Everything about it spells perfection.
That's what I thought!
i thought it spelled 7 days :))
chris botti did a great guest appearance on their live performances in this too
Not one note overplayed. Every hit intended. Perfect for the song. And yet, we are floored. Vinnie the master drummer.
Very few musicians on the planet have been on this guys level of genius.
This is the reason why Sting's songs are uncopiable. What a great song for procrastinators.
This 5/4 groove is so fun to play. Vinnie is a legend
isnt it 5/8?
it is
This is 5/4, you count it in crotchets not quavers.

this song still awesome . nobody produce this kind of music anymore.
Joni Mitchell, Steely Dan's Walter Becker and Don Fagin -and Sting -the greatest songwriters of ALL time.I have grown up with Stings musicians as I have grown wiser and more subtly as a person -so has Stings alchemical grace and beauty -a joy .Thank you Gordon!
I'll add an honorable mention to Breakfast in America for their wonderful "The Logical Song." I never tire of hearing it.
I. G. Y. is my favorite by Fagen, and I have a soft spot for Shape of Your Heart by Sting because I love playing cards, though it's really hard to pick one top favorite from him because I love so many of his songs with equal joy, this one being one of them.
One of my all time favorite songs. Ten Summoner’s Tales was so beautifully composed, a timeless masterpiece really.
Yep. It really stands alone in it's completeness (for want of a better word).
Passed me by first time around but it is an outstanding piece of work, perfectly executed as is most things has done. Reading his autobiography.. great sincere read.
Yes and to the average ear it is impossible to distinguish the notes , etc.
Unless you have a true musical genius ear.
... And the sound, guys. The sound!

Me too man, that song is amazing!
Sting writes with such honesty and integrigrity. He is a very acomplished artist in so many ways.

Bravo!❤
A masterpiece with a stratospheric Vinnie off the charts.
Everyone's talking about Sting and the drummer, but I fricking love that smile from the keyboardist at the beginning of the video!
i swear man! and that head tilt he does. makes you feel jealous, in a good way, of the fun they're having. i think he's looking at the drummer at that time
That’s cos he’s admiring Sting and Vinnie’s drumming lol he knows what’s coming
Man he's so goddamned into the pocket on that off rhythm stab/pluck....his meter was so consistent considering how he had to play 'out and around' what the drums were laying down.
Great work sir! Thanks
I would like to say that as a drummer who has been studying, for the past 30 years for the most part, this song in particular carries the benefit of total satisfaction. Vinnie is amazing. I am so thankful for Sting getting Vinnie on board for this album which is a masterpiece.
His taste and groove on this track is phenomenal.
@@mrshankly213 I agree. It is perfect in every way. Taste is the right word, every accent, the syncopation and polyrythms, and the authority in his limb independence flips all my switches and turns all my dials every time I hear it, since like, 1998? This isn't even my genre but I will go well outside of my comfort zone in order to hear something as outstanding as this. Vinnie is a gift!
The quality of the mainstream music back then was in a different universe compared with today, we've all been fed garbage for the last couple of decades.
The swing and dynamics in his playing is spine chilling. Wow.
Ah, Vinnie, you drumming genius!
Sting: can you make it sound a bit more like Copeland?
I don't know what's more mesmerizing...Sting's voice or the instrumentals.
Wonderful track. I wish people were doing music like this now.
looking someone else there lombok land and life.. u will found more then sting polis
Vinnie's drums on this are sublime and so damn awesome.
When you try and explain to someone that you like music that sounds full. This is it! Never gets old.
LYRICS (YEAR 1993):
"Seven days" is all she wrote
A kind of ultimatum note
She gave to me
She gave to me
When I thought the field had cleared
It seems another suit appeared
To challenge me
Oh, woe is me
Though I hate to make a choice
My options are decreasing mostly rapidly
Well, we'll see
I don't think she'd bluff this time
I really have to make her mine
It's plain to see
It's him or me
Monday, I could wait 'til Tuesday
If I make up my mind
Wednesday would be fine
Thursday's on my mind
Friday'd give me time
Saturday could wait
Sunday'd be too late
The fact he's over six feet ten
Might instill fear in other men
But not in me
The mighty flea
Ask if I am mouse or man
The mirror squeaked, away I ran
He'll murder me
In time for his tea
Does it bother me at all
My rival is Neanderthal?
It makes me think, hey
Perhaps I need a drink
IQ is not an issue here
We won't be playing Scrabble
For her hand I fear
I need that beer, hey
Monday, I could wait 'til Tuesday
If I make up my mind
Wednesday would be fine
Thursday's on my mind
Friday'd give me time
Saturday could wait
Sunday'd be too late
Seven days will quickly go
The fact remains, I love her so (I love her so)
Seven days, so many ways
I can't run away
No, I can't run away
Monday, I could wait 'til Tuesday
If I make up my mind
Wednesday would be fine
Thursday's on my mind
Friday'd give me time
Saturday could wait
Sunday'd be too late
Oh, Sunday
Sunday'd too late, too late
Too late, too late, oh
Do I have to tell the story
Of a thousand rainy days since we first met?
Oh!
It's a big enough umbrella
But it's always me that ends up getting wet
Masterpiece
'It seems another suitor appeared'
Everything’s just perfect in this song. And Vinnie Colaiuta’s drumming is absolutely stunning.
"The fact he's over six feet ten / might instill fear in other men / but not in me, the mighty flea (flee?) / ask if I am mouse or man / the mirror squeaked, away I ran / he'll murder me in time for his tea" The singer reveals his physical and social intimidation, acknowledging his own delusion and cowardice - without surrendering his poetic nature. And somehow it's hilarious to me. I laugh every time. Genius songwriting.
(Also, those who owned Ten Summoner's Tales in physical format and read the lyrics will know I didn't make up "(flee?)")
He'll always be the king of pain, never forget, lad... he never hid his torment...

Vinnie’s ability to feel the vibe and flow of the song while adding a keen sense of rhythm and energy that ebbs and flows is truly amazing!!! ✌️😎🎤🔥🥁
One of Sting's best songs. Vinnie is a beast on the drums. He's so inspirational♥️
He plays with right mood intense and calm
This is the most beautiful song ever written about procrastination! As a timid procrastinator, who has been in love with a woman for years, and not been able to marshal the courage to tell her how I feel, this song speaks to me on such a deep level.

Right, you don't want to die knowing you never approached her.
+Carey Cox
What a tragic thought.
+Drake Santiago It took me 47 years but I told her in 2010. She did not feel the same as she is too good of a person to say that back to a (very committed) married guy. (In love only twice but both times for life) Life can be very complicated.
Vinnie... This never gets old.
The little tastes of 6/8 he puts in the groove are amazing
I think it's 5/4
I love how Dr. Sting tells stories with his music. 🎭
Yes. Dr. Sting. Professor Sting, King Sting, Head mixer...
Love this song. Masterclass in chord progressions.

lol! had read your replies see how many got it ;)
Incredible songwriting and musicianship seemingly hidden in a "simple" song. What a treat to the ears this is. Beautiful drum work, the keys and guitar adding tension in the verse, and then the calm of the chorus. I love it. Absolutely master class production and playing. This is what makes me happy to be a musician.
Well said and TRUE!
You said it perfectly, I believe every musician can reach this level of musicianship if they get out of their own way and let the music take control!!!!
This is a masterpiece. Period.
This is by far the best band he's put together. They are so on, and the tour was even better! They are so tight...it's like they're just sitting there... waiting for the notes and they're perfect. Musicians like this make it LOOK easy. It's not! Each one is at the top of his game. Sting is so talented, he attracts them. All I can say is WOW! - honored to have seen this show 🙏🎶✨️✨️✨️
They are tight but I would debate you on that one and take his band from 'Bring On The Night' if you don't mind; Kenny Kirkland (keyboards), Darryl Jones (bass), Branford Marsalis (saxophone), Omar Hakim (drums).
@@anagram8 Ahhh you're right, good call! So much talent there
You know @@JTland-sea-air there's room for both schools of thought. I think Sting needed the first band as part of his growth moving on from the 'Police' and this group spoke to who he was during that part of his journey. I could see him having an entirely different band today that speaks to who he is now. We are different at different times of our journey and some how the same.
The irony of a song called "seven days" being in 5/4. Really cool song.
One of the few perfect songs. I never get tired of listening to Seven Days.
nothing like 5 beats per bar to make your soul want to fly
Habe es heute auf dem Rad zufällig nach langer Zeit in einem Podcast wieder gehört, mein Herz ging auf, sehr selten: Gänsehaut.
Der. Song. Ist. Soooo. Geil!!!
Die drums von Vinnie, genial! Es passt einfach alles!
Musicians at the top of their game -- alongside one of the best song writers.
The lyrics in this song are perfection. The performance of them sublime. The music intricate and beautiful. The man behind it uncannily the only being alive capable of pulling it all together to intertwine into and beyond a masterpiece.
Beautifully said.
Agreed100%
I hope Sting reads this. When these songs came out, it was the lowest of my life, yet my best in a way, Thank you for this album. it really had a big influence on my life at the time. I learned to love animals., be aware of family, and to give to the community at this time. Thank you.
I thought that loving animals comes naturally
That's how to sing with drums. Perfectly nice duet with Sting's beautiful voice.
The level of jealousy towards Sting is...like the man is a genius certified! A magical elf who goes into the forest and comes out with a song. TF are these dislikes? Songwriting machine and picks the best musicians in the world. It's not his fault that his face is spectacular to top... and your wife wants to sit on his face lol. Blame his parents.
Loooool 😅
Vinnie Colaiuta is from another 🌍. Amazing
Drumming masterclass!
Increíblemente. 5/4 o 5/8?
5/4
5/8
Miss li
It would be 5/4 because it's 5 quarter notes per bar. 5/8 would mean there are 5 eighth notes per bar, which isn't true because in this song their are 10 eighth notes per bar.
The perfect song...and more: it's a 5/4!

Simple groove?! Are you serious?!
Yeah, 5/4 not really all that simple.
When you're so good your music video is an actual live performance.
The drum groove with style and everything. Only Colaiuta can do it
Holy Crap... Gives me goosebumps every time I hear VC on this. Great song
When I grow-up, can I play music like these pros???? I first listened to this song, many times, as the cassette repeatedly reversed itself, while traveling across the Ukraine. Gazing out of the windows of the rhythmically moving train, seeing the fields pass bye, lovers sitting by the ponds, small villages with the elderly strolling about their chores, as each tale from Sumner unfolded. Along the tracks, of the train and tunes, each exotic time signature made the journey a memorable experience, one that created a sense of newness, complimenting one another. Now that I am home, back in the States, so many years later, I travel, in mind, every time I rekindle the desire to sit-back, listening to the Sumner Tales.
