- Here's Taran Killam and Jake Gyllenhaal's performance of "Now (It's Just the Gas)" during the July 2nd matinee performance of Encores! Off-Center's 2015 concert production of Howard Ashman and Alan Menken's "Little Shop of Horrors."
This concert production was directed by Dick Scanlan, choreographed by Patricia Wilcox, and featured musical direction by Chris Fenwick.
Due to the recent nature of this production, and this recording, only a selection of songs and clips will be uploaded. Any messages or comments inquiring about how to obtain a copy of this recording will be ignored.
Some say that Seymour took that mask and went on to become a villain capable of creating an Avenger's level threat

The closer Orin is to death the more the mask fogs up from his breath, showing that he is running out of breath , Intenional or not it's a pretty neat detail.

fun fact: Orin didnt " laugh himself to _death._ " It takes 10 minutes of inhaling nothing but nitrous oxide to kill someone. However, anywhere from 30 seconds - 4 minutes will knock someone out. Meaning, depending on how long it took Seymour to take Orin outside, Seymour actually DID kill him

Yes, but he was breathing pure nitrous oxide (or almost pure), which we can’t survive on. So he likely died first of a lack of oxygen rather than an overdose.

THIS is the best way to do this scene! A perfect mixture of humor, suspense, and horror!

Steve Martin is better in my opinion. Although this ending to the song is so much funnier
Nathan Massam never liked how they made it “convenient” Steve’s Orin dies in a matter of seconds..... they made so many changes for you to like Seymour which is why the proper ending didn’t work (though the happy ending is a joke too ) they also made Seymour a sniveling wuss after Audrey gets fed he’s about to jump off a building (I get grief can make you do stupid things )
Douglass Sills' rendition is great
Christian Borle plays orin off Broadway right now and I think he’s probably one of the greatest

Markula4O4O yep that’s how it ends in the original show too. I wish they added this to the movie version. Mean Green Mother From Out Of Space is so good though. I wish that was in the show lol

i saw this for my 15 birthday and somehow my ipod starting playing music through my earbuds LOUDLY during the later part of this number. i didn’t realize it was me and i thought someone’s phone was ringing and was really annoyed at them. when i realized it was me ive never wanted to die more 😭 little shop is my favorite thing in the world and this was my first time seeing it live. i was so upset, it echoed through the theatre at the pause when he dies

As a fan of snl, Taran is one of my favorite cast members, and loving this musical and song, I clicked on the video not reading the title with an amazing surprise to see him play Orin.
Is it me or would Taran make for an amazing Joker/Pennywise? He has the laugh and the sinister quality to him.

Gyllenhaal can sing well...but Killam can REALLY sing, like at a broadway level.
Taran was in Hamilton on Broadway -- he's got such amazing pipes, and what a gifted, funny-as-hell actor, too. :)

A fishbowl. The thing they developed for the movie was awesome. It was a sick looking torture device. Couldn’t have come up with something a little better.

This wasn't a full production, just a staged reading... so they don't use many props at all, and for the dialogue sections of the show (and even a few songs), the actors were using scripts. But I'm with you: If Orin can have the gas mask in this scene, and they're also using a dentist chair, Seymour kinda needs a prop gun otherwise it just looks like he's giving him the ol' party point. :-D

Honestly I love taran’s performance but…that mask is really kinda ridiculous. Mostly because it’s not even a mask at all. It’s a buzz lightyear helmet lol
