  • Brett Favre was drafted into a situation where half of the front office loved him, and the other half did not. That led to a miserable Rookie season.

There's a story that when the then unknown Favre first walked onto the Packer practice field, one of the older veterans asked who the new linebacker was. Someone answered that he was not a linebacker but was instead their new quarterback! The old vet thought that he was pulling his leg. Favre's image of toughness and determination stood out early in his career at Green Bay and helped revitalize the storied Packer franchise.

Just a tiny bit of perspective could be added here. Glanville's version of this story is just a little bit different. Glanville says that they wanted to teach Favre to be an NFL quarterback, but they could never get him sober. He's not the only one who says that Favre had a problem with alcohol, and never gave himself a chance until he confronted that problem and got sober. So, there is a possibility that Favre's version is self serving.

Billy Joe Tolliver tells a story about getting Favre drunk every night of training camp. Tolliver was the backup QB but knew Favre had a cannon for an arm, so he decided to trick Favre into screwing up in training camp. Not sure if the story is true, false, or half-true. Wherever I heard it, Tolliver told it as a humorous anecdote.

He said he was tackling Brett and got up to celebrate and saw Ahman Green in the end zone with the ball. He said, "I had him we were going down".
