  • Litochoro is a small town in Pieria Greece, located at the base of Mount Olympus, on the western shore of the Thermaic gulf. 95 km SW of Thessaloniki and 420 km NW from Athens, the town is a famous destination for being the starting point to climb Mount Olympus, as most of the hiking trails begin at the edge of the town.
Visitors of Litochoro will find several hotels offering view to the mountain, cozy cafes and taverns with traditional Greek cuisine, as well as narrow cobblestone streets and preserved old houses creating a picturesque scenery. The towns central square, together with its fountain and the church of Saint Nicholas, is Litochoros most iconic point. The population of the town is 6,7 k inhabitants according to the 2021 census.
Following the road from the square towards the mountain, will bring you to the entrance of Enipeas Gorge, one of the most prominent landforms of Mt Olympus. Thousands of visitors come each year to admire the astounding beauty of the gorge, which took its name after the river that flows through its bottom, forming small pools and waterfalls along its length. In this video you can get a taste of Enipeas gorge, but in order to fully witness its beauty, you will have to hike the E4 European Long-Distance Path, stretching for 9 km (5,6 miles) ending in the location of Prionia, at 1100 m (0.68 miles) altitude.
Mount Olympus has been a National Park, the first in Greece, since 1938. Its highest peak Mytikas, meaning "nose", rises to 2,917 meters (9,572.60 ft) and is the highest mountain peak in Greece. There are several organized shelters across the mountain, operating on different elevation points, serving as a resting and resupplying stations along the hiking trails. Most of them operate throughout the months of May and October, and other remain open all year around.
Towards the end of the video there are scenes taken from the Stavros location and its shelter situated at 950 meters (0,59 miles) altitude, showing views of Litochoro and the Thermaic gulf. The nearby town of Katerini can be seen on the left. On a clear day you can see up to Thessaloniki and Halkidiki.
