    Thank you thank you thank you for ENGINEERING (mixing) this hallmark event. The energy was always there in light of Carnegie Hall's inferior audio equipment. Tim and Lee deserve a grammy for this yeoman effort. An we get to hear Terry, Danny, and Pete again! What a formidable rhythm section.

    Thank you Lee for this project. I have the original vinyl album still in great shape with all the posters wish I was older to see this run.

    So very wonderful to have more live recordings of Terry and his genius. We get to hear more of him talking to the audience as well....nothing better!

    I wore the grooves out of these 4 vinyls in the mid-seventies...and am now really looking forward to listening to the entire week's performances.
    However, I just may be a *bit* disappointed that the warts on any of the tunes may have been removed / repaired, regardless of what kind of train wrecks they may have been at the time. IMHO, that stuff's part of the band's history - and growth - that we'll never get to experience..

    Wish they would release live material from ‘74 when they were at their absolute peak. I love Chicago VII. Very underrated album that balanced their progressive and pop sides.

    • @jerrymammoser9857
      @jerrymammoser9857 Před 2 lety +3

      ...I think they peaked in 1972-73. The 7th album had too much fluff and not enough true originality. Mongonucleosis, Song of the Evergreens, Italian from NY, Hanky Panky. Terrible. The First side was, basically the only good stuff. Gone was the inventiveness in tunes such as “A Hit by Varese”, “State of the Union”, “Goodbye”, all of which were prime examples of jazz-rock or rock-jazz or whatever term to describe the amalgam of the two of them in sublime balance. These were the songs that evidenced their PUSH, their striving to bring their own new experiments to the fore, all the while making them “listenable”. Chicago VI was also good. “What’s This World Coming To?”, “Rediscovery”, “Feeling Stronger Everyday” were excellent vehicles for bringing out Danny Seraphine’s playing, his tight, in-the-pocket time. I, too, would love to hear their live stuff from 1974. I agree. But as for their peak, at both studio work and live playing, I gotta go with 1972-1973. Also, I saw them live from ‘71-‘75 when they came to Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse. Met them too.

    I for one am thrilled to have this new 16 cd set. Yeah it's a little pricey as cd sets go but still cheaper than a couple of tickets to a show nowdays. Besides....you get to hear more of the genius that was Terry Kath who is awesome throughout. Just for that alone it worth the money imho.

    I love it....as a musician all you hear on a recording is what you played wrong....others might not even notice it, but to you, its sounds like a hand grenade! Don't blame them one bit for trying to smooth that over....I would too!

    What a beautiful view outside of that work room!
    After and the Foster albums have their moments, but you can't beat the Core Four...CTA II, III and Carnegie.

    • @NothingLikeVinyl

      To me, the core four are CTA, II, Carnegie and V. III displays great musicianship, but the songwriting is spotty to me.

      @RichardMNixon-zh6uz Před 2 lety +2

      That is true. 3 is the weaker of the first four or five. However, when the bar is that high, it's almost impossible to pull off every time.

    1. Please release video as well, don't care if it's grainy. 2. Please release 4k blu ray video of Tanglewood, if any concert ever deserved that treatment, it's that. 3. Consider same with the New Year's special with Beach Boys.

    It’s a nice chunk of change but honestly if you had asked me years ago, when this release seemed like a dream, what I’d pay for all 8 shows I’d have said $150 or $200. This is Chicago at their absolute peak. In other words, what would you pay for 8 1972 Pink Floyd shows or 8 1973 Zep shows?

    Good news, bad news.
    Good - remaster to hopefully fix all the sonic inadequacies. Bad news - "Someday" from the first night, fixed it for this. Respecftully could not disagree more. When a historical artifact is released, it as done so as a snapshot in time. You don't "FIX IT." A fanbase prepared to spend nearly $200 to listen / analyze 8 2+ hour shows of identical (or nearly identical) setlists, is paying precisely FOR the idiosyncrasies between versions. Not some santized, digitally retro-altered, "corrected" scrubbed version. If these are indeed homogenized versions of those performances, this becomes a hard pass.
    HiDef video releases of those tours circa 1972-1977, on the other hand, ALL IN! :

      Lee himself expressed his frustration with the recording at Carnegie Hall. He refers to Chicago Live in Japan 1972 as the complete opposite having better-recording equipment and acoustics. I hope that the 50 years of waiting will finally do the album justice, especially for Lee's sake haha

    Part of the fun of live music is the flubs, and what the band does with them. I hope they didn't clean it up too much. I like live releases as documents of the shows, not micromanaged and overdubbed. That's what studio albums are for.

      Hey John - I received the box about a week ago and have completely listened to all 16 discs. I hate to say this, but after all of the flubs (mostly in the horn section on the '71 release), all of these discs have been completely cleaned up. I can't remember hearing one mistake from any band member come through. Maybe someone else has noticed some, but because I'm also a horn player, I listened intently to them and heard no flubs that really stand out like the '71 box did. I, too, was disappointed about that because I also wanted to hear it as it was recorded each night. Of course, hearing Terry's tons of solos on these discs are worth the price of the box. Totally unbelievable in what that man could do on guitar. He never played the same thing twice. I would recomend this box just for Terry's performances throughout. And also, some of the banter between songs by both Terry & Robert can be hilarious at times.

      @@zapped56 Thanks for your reply, I might go for this. My first show was Chicago in '73, and all my live shows with Chicago were during the reign of Terry Kath. I still listen to the first 3 albums, plus Carnegie Hall; I thought things really petered out after VII. The 43 years of the Peter Cetera Love Ballad Orchestra, followed by the Chicago Horn Section with Their Backup Cover Band have been of no use to me, so I sometimes forget how Kath could light it up.

      @@johnshanley4407 You betcha!! My very first concert at the age of 15 was at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles - August 1972. They were touring for Chicago V and actually played every song on that LP except for Alma Mater. I, too also think VII was at the height of their creative juices although the remainder of the albums with Terry inluded some interesting compositions. After he died, I lost interest and went a different direction, musically. By all means, go ahead and but this set with full confidene that you'll be hearing some amazing performaces. I took notes throughout and have them all jotted down on which discs & tracks in this new box were actually used on the '71 box. Besides Scott Muni's band intro, the first song for the '71 box doesn't even start until the 5th show through the 8th Nothing was used from the first 4 shows. Enjoy!!!

      The original vinyl release was edited with songs taken from different sets that week. On this new release the Scott Muni intro is first and the band does Someday. We get all 8 performances over the 6 days (Mon-Sat with Fri and Sat having 2 shortened shows each). Most of the shows are over 2 hours except on the 2 days they did 2 shows. Those are about 90 mins. It's all there. The sound is way better than the original.

    • @NothingLikeVinyl
      @NothingLikeVinyl Před 2 lety +1

      They simply chose to put "In The Country" as the album opener. Nothing that cannot be done with studio editing. Same thing happens on Kiss' "Alive II": the concert starts on the album with "Detroit Rock City", but the real concert opener for the "Love Gun" tour (from which the recordings were culled) was "I Stole Your Love". Actually, "Detroit Rock City" was part of the encore.

    I love the original band more than I can say, but Loughnane and Jessup did a horrible job on VI Decades Live and the CTA 50th. $179 is too much to get Someday and the Canon Suite plus a rehash of the same tunes that were on the expanded version from 2005.
