I normally use a large brush for the big washes at the beginning then when I get more detailed I switch to a mid sized brush and then to a long haired rigger fine detail - different manufacturers have various brush numbering systems according to their own brand, but roughly an 18 for big washes a 6 or 10 for mid washes and then a long haired rigger.

Please share what rigger did you use to make the tree branches
I think that rigger is a WINSOR & NEWTON : COTMAN BRUSH : SERIES 333 : RIGGER : NO 0 - I usually use the cheapest brushes I can find for detailing
