  • In the United States, we’ve stopped listening to one another-truly, deeply listening to the words coming from those we don’t agree with, or those who are different from us, says Episcopal priest Stephanie Spellers. In order to reach true understanding and move forward as a people, Spellers says we have to relearn the most fundamental sense: listening with love, hope, and vulnerability.
    Stephanie Spellers is an Episcopal priest and author who is known for fueling "radical welcome" in churches across the US.
    This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

    This is incredibly accurate and although I am not religious I found this unbelievably inspiring. I have found that people ignore the truth, they stop listening and it was refreshing to listen to such an intelligent and intellectual human being talk about something I think of often.

    Thank you, Stephanie. The only way through deep division is to listen with a hospitable heart and an open mind. These are virtues and values that make for peace and radical compassion. The goal is not agreement it is enough understanding to co-exist and co-operate without conversion. You are a special priest and woman, my "little mentee."

    Wow, this speech is so relevant to what's going on in our country right now -- particularly regarding the unfolding and results of the recent election.

      Also, she's not trying to proselytize anyone into joining her religion; she's using Jesus, I think, as a vehicle for expressing her idea; and her idea, which is about listening to better understand society and yourself and others, is valuable.

    a thoughtful, heart felt talk. the comments though, sheesh. and why does mentioning Jesus send people into a freak out? she's right, people just can't listen these days.

      She is right, but her argument is anecdotal at best. Its riddled with personal opinions and nonsense in my opinion. No science behind. Her statements are good source for hypothesis, but without scientific arguments are just that - hypothesis. Plus, her point is underminded by TED format - she only talks and doesen't listen to audience))

    It is so sad that the ignorant in the comments can't what she was actually saying because she mentioned religion and talked about POC. I guess they should have listened to what she was actually saying. Smh

    Ted ex has really gone bad. I'd prefer it if it was a research and not personal opinions.

    • @daniels.os.
      @daniels.os. Před 7 lety +2

      Research is also personal, biased. Nothing can be unbiased because nothing can hold the entire. It is human social capabilities. Get back to the ground, get back to the real world. Stop hiding your intolerance behind what it really is: ignorance.

      @GeoCode6 Před 7 lety +1

      Well, then what's the difference between research and small talk genius? And I am pretty sure the word biased was mentioned by you. What I mean, ofc, is that, when a personal opinion did have a scientific process behind it, then information had more value. Back in the day. Btw thanks for the psychological profile, based on a youtube comment. Really helped me improve and "get back to the real world".

    We stopped listening when we stopped praying and reading. Thank you for sharing your experience. Beware of factionalism. We are all God's children. Our " place", as we LISTEN within our hearts and speak who and what we believe with our mouths, is developing ourselves as "Joint Heirs" with Almighty God. I wasn't offended when I was invited by my friend Angela Rudowski , Stratford High on Crowfield Plantation in Goose CCreek , SC, to the Camelia Cotillion in Charleston,SC. I was honored. I did not attend because I was a brainiac and forgot to reply. So, I missed that opportunity and pissed her off. I will always remember her. She has an excellent voice. this is what listening to this episode of TEDx has done for me . So , once again, thank you. "We are much more Alike, than we are unalike." Now you people know. I DO REMEMBER : )
