  • Ready to see the trick to hanging two gates perfectly level with one another and with the fence? Here’s how I do it. With gate jacks and my gin pole I can hang two very heavy custom 4-inch pipe gates to the pipe fence by myself on-site. Gates jacks are handy rather you have help or not and the best way to hang perfectly level gates. Hope you find this helpful and enjoy the video.
    Quick details: Two 4-inch custom pipe gates for a 12” overhead entry with connecting 6-inch post & five 4-inch rail pipe fence

    I really like the way you went back and added the extra "tab" on the hinge braces. That shows an attention to detain and extra insurance against any deformation on the hinge areas. Small addition; probably great addition to the strength of the hinges for those heavy gates.

    I was fortunate enough to have a couple fellas that had been fitting pipe together for 40+ years to reach me how to lay out and properly fit pipe. I didn’t realize how lucky I was at that young of an age to be blessed with such knowledge. I wish I had payed more attention than I did. I know I tried as hard as I could to soak up all of the knowledge that they tried to convey to such a young “hot headed” welder that thought I knew everything. I guess they must’ve seen something in me that they didn’t see in a couple other guys we wotked with. They were top notch and have both passed and are probably hanging iron for the big man above. NJ and RS will forever be looking over my shoulder like they always did. I remember it being comical to see in the reflection of my hood at how they’d be sneaking up behind me while I was laying in a root but as soon as I’d go to raise my hood they’d act like they weren’t watching. Lol watching your videos brings me back to those early days. Keep on keepin on brother. Your doing good things. I hope these folks appreciate the effort it takes to teach such a thing. There’s slot more going on behind the scenes than you care to admit I’m Sure.

  • @slingingearsburningrubber5759

    It’s nice to see someone that takes pride in the work. Is there any reason you don’t weld completely around the top of the hing stops? Would welding around the top not help with sealing it off from the elements so it wouldn’t wash down the steel and wash the grease out of the hinge? The pressure between the hinge and stop will makes a good enough seal. You might of welded around it and I haven’t seen it yet. Just curious.

    I could not see if you did but suspect you welded some stop strips beneath your slip pipe hinge around the vertical hat posts to keep them from dropping. I have a suggestion for future builds but it’s kind of hard to describe. I’ll give it a try. On the upper/top side of your hinge pipe weld a like sized piece like on the bottom of the gate’s pipe hinge piece above the hinge pipe on your gate’s hinges then weld a slightly larger pipe shroud around allowing it to protrude just enough beneath the upper rim of the gates pipe hinge to form a rain shroud/shield to keep rain and freezing water out of the hinge and find a good place to insert an alimite/zirc fitting on each hinge pipe to allow the hinged area to be greased occasionally.

  • @angieandfidelromero9343

    Great work! I learn a lot from watching your videos. One question… how do you account for any sagging after you remove the gate jacks? Do you get any sag after you remove them? If you do is it through experience that you account for it before you weld the hinges or is there some way to adjust?

    • @davidhick4303
      @davidhick4303 Před 2 lety

      i dont think there was even a smidge of sag on that gate. that design is solid. If you watch the part where he lets the jack stands off, make note of the corner of the gate in reference to the tree branches in the background. There is no movement. That's the beauty of a well designed and built gate fabbed with steel. My bet is that this gate will be solid 50 years from now, the posts wont move either, because AROSS ROCKS!

      They run what they call pigs through the line with air. They run a number of different pigs through the line. They have different pigs, cleaning pigs, which are like big sponges that fit the certain size of pipe. They have a brush pig which is like essentially a big wire brush or several wire brushes to fit the particular size of pipeline. And then they also have what they call smart pigs to find defects or anomalies.
