The instant dog melee kills actually depend on if the dog is lunging at you or not. When it lunges and you attack, you catch it and do the slow animation. When you hit it while its just roaming, the kill is instant.

I have been meditating on this game in a cave since I lost all my money on ape enn eff tees. I broke into a library last night to make this video. It's a little all over the place but I think it comes together by the end. The next one won't take six months :)
    Errors (SPOILER WARNING):
There are multiple nukes; the one that kills Beard is not the same one that kills everyone else. I neglected the location/date cards that show up before most cutscenes, and assumed that there was just one bomb/bombing that killed everybody, if you look at the cards Beard dies in 1986. I projected my thoughts about nuclear war onto the game, and assumed that if one nuke fell that indicated the whole world was ending. In FACT, the whole cast does die during the credits scene, sans Beard.
The dog kill animation plays out only if the dogs are lunging at you. It's actually a good design choice, since the animation plays out only if you alert the dogs. If you can manage a stealth kill you're rewarded with a faster kill.
Other things people have pointed out:
Some people have noted that the very last section is especially hard on the eyes, if you are sensitive to such things feel free to scroll down or tab out.

This information in turn leads to the Fans killing Henchman, obtaining his mobile phone and being 'invited' by Son, who is grief-stricken by Henchman's disappearance and apparant refusal to answer him on the phone.

I will say that there's one big mistake for the story here. It wasn't the same nuke that you see kill Glasses, it was the first. After the war in Hawaii Russia nuked San Francisco in a retaliatory strike. It's why he's dead in Jacket's later hallucinations, and likely why he joined 50 Blessings. The second one was in response to the slaughter of the Russian leaders, and it wasn't just one. It's likely they wiped out the US.
It likely wont change your views on the game, but it's different at least.

@@JimmyMcG33 You're all good! I can see why you'd miss it, it's easy to miss especially if everything isn't vibing with you. My first playthrough was a lot like how you described yours and I missed most of the less obvious plotpoints, leaving it confusing and frustrating.
But I dunno. There's something to be said about choosing to frustrate the player to communicate something to them. Like Drakengard, Rule of Rose, or even Cruelty Squad, the active antagonization of the player's sense of what a game SHOULD be feels like a purposeful choice. One meant to solidify that meta aspect into the most important thing they want the player to think about, even as they dump almost all of the specifics of what happened in the background of the first game in your lap.
Sorry to ramble, I loved this video and I think your analysis is extremely great even if I don't agree with the conclusions. You have some FANTASTIC essayist chops and I'm looking forward to what you release next.

@@JimmyMcG33 One significant detail is the date upon which the nuclear blast hits Beard's shop. April 3rd 1986. In Hotline Miami 1, April 3rd 1989 is the date that Jacket receives his first phone call from 50 Blessings, and therefore the date that Jacket begins his campaign of violence. In the prologue, Richard asks Jacket whether the date April 3rd holds any significance to him. Hotline Miami deepens that significance. April 3rd is not simply the day Jacket becomes a serial killer. It's now also the day he loses his only friend. It's the day that San Francisco is destroyed, which lays the groundwork for the coalition between Russia and the USA, inciting 50 Blessings to act.

I was relistening to this video over some gameplay since it can be hard to find a good backdrop at times, and I found a couple more things to say than just "oh nice vid".
The music you made and played at the end was very good for it's purpose, whether you made it as it's own piece of crescendo or specifically for that part of the video, it was very fitting.
What I wanted to talk about (initially when I started writing this comment) was about Richter and his plotline. If I remember correctly, one of the writers lost their mom at some point roughly during HM2's development time (or some period shortly before). From what I understand, his story was more of a bit of self-reflection and grievance over losing her than just an expression of internalized violence amorally, although I do believe it's pretty good from that angle. I just think that's a bit of context that may help you understand that section of the game a bit more. Ultimately it can be more than just one or the other.
The irony of Hotline Miami 1 and 2 being so ahead of it's time is crazy in retrospect. 1 being monumental in the moment, inspiring a lot internet culture even to this day a decade later. 2 having a lot to say and being completely misunderstood in 2015 and receiving far better feedback over 5 years later (which is quite a bit later for a game made by a small team). It makes me wish that the duo had stuck it out and tried their hands at other projects after freeing themselves from the "shackles" of their cocaine cowboy beginnings. While the nuke has many purposes narratively, it was also a direct way for them to say "look, we've done Hotline Miami. Stop asking for more" in a rather literal way - I believe they said at some point it was one of the many motivations for ending the game like that.
After all the backlash, they kinda fell out of the public eye. Dennis eventually went silent, but Jonatan has kept somewhat active on Twitter, and has alluded to working off and on with a passion project since 2021. I think making the level editor in the midst of everyone complaining to them really broke their drive to make games, which is a damn shame to see from a duo that obviously had a lot they could deliver, and the sheer connections that would allow them to pull off just about anything they were interested in. On one hand I want to say "time will tell if they ever decide to release something, together or otherwise, again" but on the other I'm not so sure it will happen all this time later as it is.

I feel like a lot of the gameplay criticism of Hotline 2 comes down to how quickly you adapted to the emphasis on gunplay. On my first playthrough, I picked it up pretty fast and only struggled significantly with one level (Dead Ahead). There are some very annoying and downright bad things about Hotline 2 but I never felt like the gunplay emphasis was much of an issue. Some parts you noted as being bad I can't remember ever having problems with (Tony's first level, for example). I'm sure it's just a person to person thing but I was fine for most of the game

I see Richard in HM2 as the devs talking to the players under guise of one character talking to the others. Everyone knows what happens when a piece of media known for violence gets sequels, it gets more and more intense until it hits the ceiling of suspension of disbelief. Tbh, that’s why I think they jumped straight to nukes in HM2, since there’s nowhere else for the hyperviolence to go afterward.

34:04 I really like the point made here about the systems of the game not matching its themes, as someone who's loved and defended this game since its release most people articulate the problem as the game just being harder worse designed than the first, which to an extent I've always conceded, but the way you propose the idea of a different or nonexistent scoring system to match certain character's gameplay really fits in line with how I've viewed the game. The way the pacifist stages punish you for going berserk definitely could've been extrapolated to more of the levels.

I finished the video for the first time after watching your video on the first game and this one over the course of a week, and I have to say they're fantastic! I don't agree with everything said about Wrong Number, but you explained your points extremely well and I can totally see why you feel the way you do about this game. I'm still very conflicted on wrong number myself, because while the first game was a more homogeneous fantastic experience, to me the highs of WN surpass the first game, but it also has a few very low moments (looking at you Dead Ahead and Stronghold), so I still have no idea whether I prefer the first game or not almost a year after playing them back to back for the first time. Hotline Miami 1 and 2 are going to be endlessly discussed for ages because there's so much to talk about. while I've made a video on HLM 1 myself, I didn't want to tackle Wrong Number right after because it's such a massive game, so it's very intimidating to talk about. but anyway, your videos were very interesting to watch, and I can't wait to see more from you. you gained a new subscriber.

Comment 2: Wrong Number. I watched this entire video without stopping and my SINGLE issue with it is that some of the sped-up footage (particularly toward the very end of the video) hurts to look at. Hotline Miami already isn't particularly accessible for the photosensitive and some of those sequences were leagues more visually overwhelming than anything in the games. Besides that, I adored every second of this video and I'm so happy someone put so much of what I felt about this game into words. "I wish it were more fun". This channel is a gem.

Wow, only 22 minutes into the video and it's helped me realize something. I always loved Evan's levels more than the others and wasn't sure why, I thought it might just be the novelty of playing a pacifist among a lineup of killers but really it was that /and/ playing as him being more like HM1 due to the focus on melee and faster ground kills. I never even picked up on how much HM2's gameplay changes irked me until you pointed them out, but yeah, it's a lot of little things that soured it for me.

  • @helpgirlimhavingalifecrisis

After I finished watching this, I have to admit I loved what I saw here. I was hesitant going into this because I know many people who often critique the gameplay don’t really take into account whatever masterful storytelling is on display (and I do love this game’s story-it’s one of my favorite stories when divorced from its gameplay). Even fewer take into account how said gameplay and story melt into one another and feed into a feedback loop, which I felt was accurately satisfied by this video both praising the risks Dennaton took with the game and also acknowledging when (very often) said risks didn’t work. Risks after all are risks for a reason, and HLM2 is a perfect example of a game to me that doesn’t make its risks work, albeit I define risk as basically anything deviating from HLM1. That game to me is perfect in basically every way that isn’t minor nitpicks or limitations with the game engine. I have to wonder if Dennaton knew how risky it was to create a game like this, because based on how much deliberate intent was poured into this game, I feel like on some level they knew this game would be controversial to their fanbase.
Either way, find it fascinating how thoroughly this video explores how the game both is and isn’t a perfect sequel and I am looking forward to your analysis and video essays in the future. Keep up the good work.

I also wondered why in the Hawaii part of the game, the US army is sending commandos to take enemy bases by themselves with no support at all. The best explanation that I came with is that the war is getting dire for the US, so they have to take desperate mesures: just send the elites and at worst they'll cause a ruckus and gain some time.

I really liked the last video about Hotline Miami and this one was really good too. If I could offer one piece of constructive criticism though, I did find myself struggling a bit to read the on screen dialogue text, as you tended to move through it a bit quickly. Though, most of the time it was super easy to just pause and take as much time as I needed, unless you were also speaking at the same time. Other than that, this was fantastic.

Hotline Miami 2 was a game I was happy to play and even happier to finish - but i was happiest that I didn't complete it the year it came out, because I'm fairly certain that in a period of extreme trauma i would have misinterpreted its ending in a way that would have led to what I can only charitably refer to as a bad outcome for me.

HM1 is my fav indie and I played in the release day on my ps vita
I am platinum the second game on my ps5 for the 2 time and as I am older and more critic. I am not enjoying this game as much as I was in the past, sadly...
HM2 has great story and music.
But its a game after all.
The most important thing is the gameplay. And as a game.. its not really bad but I dont think I will ever play again really.
Even as HM2 was one of the games I ever played in my life thanks to the level editor.
I am really done with 2 in general.
But not with the one. The one is the one literally lol.
I dont really think I preefer something in the 2 over the 1 also.

But I didn't liked the very fast scenes at the ending and the long pauses with only gameplay.

The other big problem with HM2 gameplay aside from the level design is the enemy AI. Their reaction time is basically halved from the first game and they move much faster, still encouraging baiting from a corner or by shooting a gun at the wall. The right screen from Hot&Heavy in HM1 has a similar level design to HM2 but that screen is much less frustrating because the enemies take longer to spot you, meaning that you have more time to shoot them or melee them.
Also I wished you talked about Hard mode and how it is even more stupid and frustrating than the base game, with weapons getting half the ammo every time you pick them up, so throwing guns to down enemies is even less appealing. Harder enemies show more on Hard but they do nothing but restrict you even more.
As for the story while I liked your analysis, in the end even if you understand everything the themes still don't come through because of two things. The characters are all boring, they are all joyless killers that are only remembered for their one meme sentence ("gotta get a grip" "I fucking hate these people" etc.), and they fail to communicate their themes unless you look at the larger picture. But even if you do, there are simply too many themes there. The game wants to be a metacommentary on the state of vidya fans and sequels, but also a war story and an autobiography, a prequel and a sequel, a deconstruction of violence in media, and it's too much. Ultimately the game works more (imo) as the story of a bunch of people who could have made the difference if they only looked a bit more far than their current situation (some of them could have pieced together that shit was about to go down and do something about it). The theme is focus, which is funny since it's what the game lacks in both story and gameplay.

@@other_horizon1085 Here's the Hotline2babby cope. There is nothing to "get". The game's plot is just a bunch of shit thrown at a wall and hoping that something will stick. The characters are boring, the themes are all jumbled up and not cohesive, the ideas are explored only on a pretty surface level and the pacing is all over the place. This would be fine if the gameplay was even halfway decent, but even there there is nothing salvageable.

More characters, more story, more guns, more giant levels with windows, so much more Hotline that you almost want to puke!), I think your criticisms are very valid and your observation that its critical re-evaluation is occurring in step with people not actually having to play it is very perceptive.

You made an excellent analysis and critique. You thoroughly discussed the gameplay decisions that I clearly struggled with when the game came out either knowingly or subconsciously, and weaved those criticisms into a discussion of how the gameplay and narrative elements don't work holistically as they may have done with the original.
I wish I could say that much of my confusion with what the developers were trying to convey is because of this dissonance but I think I may largely just be a part of that particular group the Wiki editor was bemoaning. I'll just have to enjoy a literary analysis vicariously through CZcams. I believe the closing words were an incredibly tight synopsis of the previous 115 minutes that could only come from a very compassionate study and experience with the two games that helped me view them differently in retrospect. This closing segment also had the best song in the video.
