  • Cradle of knowledge and techniques in glass par excellence, the island of Murano opens up to an unprecedented reflection on the vitreous medium that has cemented its position in world history. With the exhibition (Simon Berger:) Shattering Beauty, organised in collaboration with Berengo Studio 1989, the Museo del Vetro presents an artist whose unique practice breaks with the tradition of blowing or modelling glass. Simon Berger‘s creative process happens through destruction, as blows of his hammer force cracks on the surface of the vitreous canvas into alluring paintings. Referred to by the artist as “morphogenesis“, this pioneering approach to glass harnesses the medium‘s fragility which inadvertently becomes its greatest strength. The artist‘s “brushstrokes“ emerge as an expressive gesture on a brittle surface where light and transparency form into captivating images.
Running from January 28 to May 7, 2023, Shattering Beauty endeavours a reflection on the possibilities of working in glass, a medium ever more artists explore in their creative research. The exhibition, curated by Adriano Berengo and Sandrine Welte, accordingly aims at carving lines of inquiry for a contemporary dialogue with a long-standing tradition that continues to re-invent itself in every new expressive forms.
The installation created for the show at the Museo del Vetro will unfold across the exhibition space, intended as an invitation to get lost amidst glass cubes that sprawl about the rooms. Featuring sculptural works of different sizes, Simon Berger: Shattering Beauty shall unravel how cracks and breaks become lines of inquiry into modes of seeing and perceiving as the glass surfaces turn into a reflection of and on the very beholder. Part of the immersive work will be a selection of the artist‘s glass “canvases” as a nod to new portraiture. Several of the glass canvases will be made specially for the exhibition at the museum. At least one of these will be created in front of a live audience at the opening event, providing a true insight into Berger’s artistic practice. In this way, the subtle dialogue the artist wishes to create between his own practice as “performance”, and that of the Muranese glass-blowing tradition, will be established as Berger brings his own method of working with glass to Murano for the very first time.
