#strategy #wargames #top5 - Hry
Game-Labs, dev studio behind UA: D is based in Kiev, Ukraine.
I`m also frustrated with lack of bigger improvements of the game since long time, but taking into consideration their situation (literally part of their team went to the front) it`s more understandable and in fact - I`m even impressed, they actively support this and other of their games.
Pretty sure the lead designer on dreadnoughts is in Greece, but not sure if he’s living in Kiev or if their Programer is in Kiev or whatever.
@@thehistoricalgamer i remember some time ago there was discussion on Steam, concerning slow development of the game (and that "full release" is rather like big Beta) and G-L mentioned that important part of their team (at least working on this title) is in fact in Ukraine.
Thanks for the video, always look forward to your videos
love your videos thanks for all your effort in 2023 here's to you for 2024
Thanks!
Excellent video and recs yet again
Nice review(s).. thank you. Happy New Year and be well.
Oh mate, glad you are feeling better and may the greetings and good wishes of the season be upon you!
I've been following your recent campaign in 'merica but also catching up with your war in the Pacific with XTRO, (no spoilers please) but loving the logic and game-play, can't say I'm a fan of all the early Japanese success but thinking you will reason and strategically find a way to push back. looking forward to it (I'm on episode 99), I love that you do this simply because you enjoy it, that comes across..
Cheers matey, to 2024, may it be an exceptional year for all of us!
Happy 2024. I hope it be a good one for you and for everyone else. A lot of these look quite fun.
You need to discover War Design Studio. There new Thirty Year War was fantastic. I think most War Gamers prefer the Troop over Total Tank Generals.
Ultimate admiral Dreadnoughts was my favorite and my steam end of the year statistics agreed. The campaign has received significant upgrades during the year and is very good by now. Only problem is the AI that can't actually lead large fleets very well. Some people complain over the lack of aircraft, but I enjoyed this, because that way the game is a boxing match of the giants, which is very interesting to observe. Just gunfire and occasional torpedoes. The game also illustrates really well how 10 years can turn a ship from the worst enemy you can meet to something that nobody fears.
Having a strategy with multiplayer, especially coop, is a major reason for me to buy a game.
Great video!
EDIT :
I bought Grand Tactician : The Civil War and the DLC because I watched your videos about it and I really liked the role play aspect. I hope more games try this! :)
Sorry to hear that I hope are feeling better
I loved your portion on Great War. You really sold me on it! You're an eloquent reviewer, THG
Its a FUN GAME, but it CAN get a little tedious. Then again i guess thats the point, WW1 was pretty Tedius given taking a few yards of ground was considered a WIN.
From last time i played though, the AI is VERY passive, only making attacks when it has a HUGE advantage (you can beat them but still.) For most part I was the only one attacking. But maybe i was attacking too often so the AI was constantly using its supplies to Defend? I honestly don't know if the AI has its own Economy or not but it might.
@@jaywerner8415 thanks for the response! Looking forward to playing it, maybe after I finish Cyberpunk.
I'm used to bad AI in strategy games lol
Good to see a half decent ww1 strategy game. Such a fascinating conflict that is hard to gamify
I just bought it because it was a on a good sale - 60% off. But I am concerned that on the main Steam page the reviews talk a lot about the devs abandoning the game. That's a shame, as it looks to have a lot of potential and some DLC could have maybe fleshed that out. However, I went ahead and bought it because I'm happy to support efforts to develop wargames focused on something other than the 'traditional', obligatory WW2 games or the ancient/Napoleonic warfare. Also games that at least try to break away from standard NATO counters and terrible UI that plague so many wargames.
Grand Tactician base game itself is really fun, was waiting on Whiskey so this helps me want to get that. I do highly recommend mods to add more generals and upgrade the army sprites gfx.
UAD is starting to get some mod support which is improving it greatly plus the devs are still supporting it. I have high hopes for it.
mods? where?
Happy New Years, historical brother. I think we need a cool new Antietam game soon!
Yes I agree. I think scourge of war is working on a remaster, maybe they’ll upgrade Antietam!
To note, the team behind Grand tactician, 'Grand Engineer Corps'... I have great respect for these guys' attitude. They have been working on the game continuously since release, patching, improving, extending, and all that - with a good level of communication with fans. Early on I got in touch about some issues with the game; I got a polite, detailed, and to-the-point response in just a couple of hours, and fixes were included in the patch that followed. And I am seeing them continue to improve it at a good pace.
All this to say once more 'all hail to small studios (and indie developers)' who do not just take us for granted, like most major devs out there (I'm looking at you Creative Assembly, among others!).
P.S. The dream is that their next game, using the same formula, would be on the Napoleonic wars. Or (and yes, wishful thinking, I know) on the Thirty Years' War.
Call to Arms - Gates of Hell: Ostfront has really developed and should be considered esp with the new Liberation (USA) dlc. Have you played it Historical Gamer?
Yes! I'd love to see this on the channel
@@HistoryTeacherSteve I'm also a history teacher! 😁
@@Arrwmkr oh nice! What's your favorite time period or topic or person from history?
@@HistoryTeacherSteve I teach twenieth century which is a lot of fun and very interesting although depressing when you see the world making similar mistakes again! (Gaza and Ukraine). I also teach French and Russian revolutions, these are both crazy times! I also love medieval history and teach Australian indigenious history under colonisation which is quite shocking. I live in Australia so that is why. What about you?
@@HistoryTeacherStevewhat about you?
Thanks!
Thank you from the UA Dreadnoughts team
Ultimate Admiral Dreadnoughts went bad when they switched from mono compiler to il2cpp. That killed modding. Previously I had modded in semi-acoustic guided torpedoes. That became impossible after the switch to il2cpp. Fortunately I still have an early build, although I wish I could get the full campaign using mono.
LOVE Rules the Wave 3; as for the other most played thing from this year, that would be Second Front, an EXCELLENT computer adaptation of Advanced Squad Leader. They've the the Bully and Beef expansion is going to be free when it's done!
I played Second Front and was not a fan with how distance and elevation didn’t seem to matter much when it came to units taking damage and breaking but it was also before any patches so maybe they improved that? My MGs on hills were breaking after a single fire from infantry halfway across the map and on the floor while the MG had high ground.
@@thehistoricalgamer Just being on high ground is a very tiny plus; really need to have some sort of cover. But, it comes down to the quality and morale of your units vs their quality and leaders if any. It can be a brutal learning curve, but once you 'get it', it's very addicting!
I had so much trouble commanding troops in Grand Tactician. It's a shame because the world map is just awesome.
Hey HG, it looks like a number of old SSI titles are on Steam now. I've got "Great Naval Battles" on my wish list, it's priced at a little over $5.00 and includes all the games under that series.
I remember seeing a company was working on them, I wasn’t sure if they had the license or if they were pirating an abandonware copy lol but I’m definitely interested.
The order of battle in rule the waves 3 is a massive improvement over rule the waves 2. the random ship selections for battles ruined RTW 2 for me. I lost a couple of wars because the battle generator insisted on repeatedly putting a couple of my cruisers up against the whole enemy fleet despite me outnumbering them three to one. just for that improvement alone its worth getting RTW3 over the previous instalment.
I was on the fence buying the Great War because of mix reviews but this video got me to pull the trigger on buying it.
Battles can get repetitive so the critiques are fair but I still think it’s awesome!
Ya but that's how the war was. And its still the most gruesome war@@thehistoricalgamer
Grand Tactician remains to me the most promising wargame in years. I was a bit disappointed at the many bugs and clunky AI on the new DLC. But I hope they keep improving. The game engine doesn't seem like the greatest in terms of performance but it's one of the few games that you play and you feel like there's authentic and realistic strategic depth to it.
I think that Total war generals did do one thing better than other panzer general-like games: the combined arms feature. The fact that you could stack several units in one hex to make a combined attack. Yeah, Panzer corps 2 was good too but i found this game did it better.
"On Christmas Day, i came down with Covid" Your not alone mate, i came down with Covid too, 2 weeks before Christmas. Went away on the 24th though so that was nice.
정말 재미있는 전략 게임들을 추천하셨군요!
저는 개인적으로 Total Tank Generals를 정말 재미있게 즐겼습니다.
캠패인과 미션이 짧았다는 당신의 의견에 적극 동감합니다.
Unity of Command 2 는 아직 까지 나에겐 너무 어렵습니다.
한국에서 항상 이 채널을 즐겨 보고 있습니다.
I wasn't expecting this message lol :D 프랑스에서 안녕하세요!
@@cedo3333 Merci. C'est bon de vous rencontrer XD
You should try Hex of Steel
Okay you convinced me to buy W&L
I love UAD myself. That and Gates of Hell are my two favorite war games these days
Good picks!
I'm a big fan of UA:D, even though its limitations are frustrating. I really don't understand why there wouldn't be a multiplayer option, especially since the AI is so bad. And why can't players save their ships in an easy manner and offer downloadable templates for other players? And why not a good, abstracted aircraft and carriers function to make the 1940s portion relevant? But it's still a fine game, which continues to get patched every other week or so.
I was really disappointed in the Whiskey & Lemons DLC. It has so much potential, but suffers from the same bad AI as the base game. It's really compounded by the fact that the player's regiment can sit and do absolutely nothing for a year, which certainly affects the fun part of playing it. Seems to be updated in a super-slow fashion too.
Good to see Unity of Command 2 mentioned here. It's my favorite version of this game genre, and the DLCs have been outstanding.
Another poster here mentioned the Hex of Steel game. It's really worth checking out. It's constantly being updated by the indie designer and it's a shame that more people aren't giving it a look.
Panzer General 2 I loved over one because Artillery counter fire worked better then PG 1.
I also dream of a multiplayer campaign
The biggest issue with Western Front I see is the AI. You can just stay on the defensive until you rush research for tanks. Once you get tanks, the enemy AI never seems to have an answer. Still a great game.
I wish someone would modernize the Steel Panthers series from the 90s. They dont have to reinvent the wheel just new graphics, interface and sounds.
I think that was 2by3’s next project after War in the East 2, but I haven’t heard anything on it since.
Glad you are feeling better, I had Covid in November and it was far worse than the first time. Also I'd like to see American Revolution from a naval perspective. Happy New year
How is the Great War compared to Commander : The Great War?
I love Ultimate Admiral. I like to just do the battles
I was a great fan of Rule the waves but when you taste the 3 D graphics you can't come back. Admiral Dread.... has some flaws sure thing, but it is so satisfying to see your ship working as intended and the graphical part is really nice for a not AAA game ! That's a shame i never played the Rule the waves 2 and 3 (was planning to buy the 2 but the co-owner died....). About Great war, I didn't test it as it was very interesting and nice but... so repetitive. I'm pretty sure in 3-4 hours i'm gonna be already bored.
Happy New Year
Happy new year to you as well!
I enjoy “The Great War: Western front”, but the battles are repetitive with all maps, even if different feel the same. Also, if using a VPN the game plays disconnected from the server (it's an online game as usual). The second, and most important drawback, is that if using one of the excellent mods, you don't get Achievements. So no VPN and no mods to get the full experience, and no other game I recall has this.
I enjoyed the game for the first few hours, but the game play loop got too boring and repetitive with fighting on the same battlefield over and over again.
@@singledad1313 Same experience. rarely ever play it now.
Uad is fantastic. Bugs and stupid stuff and all. I love it
2023 was really underwhelming for war games
He didn't mention Ultimate General: AR. He didn't mention Second Front.
American Revolution has a high likelihood of being on next years list. I went by Steam Launch dates, AR is still too early in EA to qualify for this list. In fact you’ll notice I didn’t include any early access games on my list.
Hex of steel...
Wargame: Red Dragon
Change my mind.
It came out in 2014…
@@thehistoricalgamer Technical detail without merit xD
On-topic. i totally agree on yours election. I think we got a nice selection to choose from this year, despite certain issues.
I found the Great War to be too rock paper scissors. I love the era, but would so much rather have grand tactician style gameplay
Rogue Trader a strategy game?? A RPG with tactical combat yes, strategy no. One big problem that our corner of the gaming industry is complete chaos in genre/game type naming and it confuses new players and probably loses a lot of them.
Grand Tactician is not impressive when your getting flanked the sub unit leader guy *thats in the front* has to wait for the over all unit commander *who is in the rear and does not know whats going on* permission to rotate his unit to counter the flanking attack by the time the ok has been given it is to late the sub unit leader guy's unit has ether been over runned or destroyed at that point
Ultimate General Civil War may not have as much bell's and whistles but at least your able to move forward
When do you sleep? Lol
total Tank General was horribly unbalanced, I like the concept but it was impossible to play I have no seen any upgrades or patches
I didn’t have any issues playing it from a balance pov, but I only played the campaigns.
I will try one of those @@thehistoricalgamer
