- Happy Whole Grains AND Mes De La Herencia HISPANA. In English, Hispanic Heritage Month aka LatinX Heritage Month. The latter term is more inclusive. Can’t get into this too much, but if you’re wondering why, NPR has a great explainer article on this. Link below.

To celebrate both, we’ll learn how to cook amaranth or amaranto 2-ways.
According to the Whole Grains Council, its prevalence was found mostly in the Aztec empire. It was domesticated about 6,000 years ago! It’s a very special ingredient. The plant has bright, deep pink flowers that contain the seeds. It’s very hardy and can grow to 9 feet tall! Its leaves are also edible.

What would you do with amaranth?
Cook and eat with fruit 😃
@@lula9969 That sounds yummy Lula, what kind of fruit?
Thank you for the great info!
A request, please think about turning off the background music while you are talking. I am partially deaf and it's very hard to hear your words over the music. Thank you for understanding.
Great video & i love the music. Please dont remove it. I do see other's comments so i guess when you find the right volume level it'll mesh better....but the song just creates a happy & fun vibe & i want to dance lol Have a great day! 🥰🙏🏽💃
Thanks so much Dee for watching and not being put off by the music! I very much appreciate your supportive comments. Yes, I agree that I need to figure out the right volume. There's a lot that goes into making the videos engaging and fun. For a little bit there I was discouraged, your comment brightened my day. Sending you lots of lots of love, health and happiness. Thank you again, it meant a lot to me that you wrote.
I cook it the 2nd way. It's great as a breakfast bowl or dessert bowl with vanilla or honey yogurt and almond butter or peanut butter and fruit or granola on top.❤
That sounds soooo good!
That looks like a very convenient option to make whole grain bread. Instead of grinding it you can just cook it down till you get a dough like consistency.
Thank you
Thank you for watching and commenting!
Mostly all Indian stores carry it. Called Rajgira.
I am curious if boiling the water first would be indicate ❤
Interesting to give cooking tips on something you have no experience cooking.
Thanks for watching and commenting! Yes I'm upfront with that and share who I learn from to encourage folks to try something new. I try to practice what I preach and not let perfection get in the way of good.
Good video. Would you really use 1 cup per portion? I don't know if it's just me i'm 32 year old male 5 12 in height and 1/2 a cup seems like quite a big portion but maybe i'm not eating enough. Just weighed out 100g seemed like quite alot.
Thanks for watching and trying it out 🙂Are you talking about half a cup cooked OR half a cup of uncooked then cooked? These little grains do expand after cooking. Amaranth is quite filling.
1 un cooked cup? but I just realized your cup sizes are different to ours. I'm in the UK 1 uncooked cup is 125g here, but that is still to much for me. I'm not good with cup measures so i'm just going to stick to 50g portion soak over night then cook 1 1/2 x the weight of water.@@kalahealthandwellness
How do you clean amaranth without losing most of them through a sifter?
good question, maybe cheese cloth?...
Can add any milk (coconut or almond)
Great tip. Thanks again for commenting 🙂
Thanks for the recipes, but your music is too loud.
No seasoning or salt added to it?
Thanks for watching! You could definitely season as you like. Amaranth can be prepared sweet or savory. I wanted to taste it plain to get to know the grain.
The volume of the music is too loud, it's difficult to hear you.
Thanks for watching and the feedback. I will keep that in mind. I'll double-check my volume settings to make sure it's just right for future videos.
Is amaranth a millet
Namaste Vijaya! Thanks for watching and asking! They looks very similar, but amaranth is smaller and whiter. They are both whole grains.
@@kalahealthandwellness is mayonnaise a millet?
@@NJ-wb1cz thanks for chiming in, but the answer is more obvious than amaranth.
@@kalahealthandwellness oh well. At least horse radish is still a millet
@@NJ-wb1cz 😂
Don’t ruin our heritage by saying Latinx 😒
Take a deeper pan so that the seeds don’t jump out
Great idea :-) Thanks for watching!
Music background is annoying & loud
Please do not put music when explaining something, it is distracting
Parham, thanks for watching and your honest feedback. I am going to try to figure out what works best for most folks that also make me happy. Sometimes I don't have the volume at the right level and it can be distracting. Still tweaking as a Iearn more about producing these videos.
I can't take the Noise!!!
Thanks for tuning in, and out 😉. Apologies for the volume of the background sound. I hope to find the optimal level in my future videos. I appreciate your feedback. Happy New Year!
You lost me with the obnoxious music.
Thanks for trying to watch and your feedback.
Lost me at “latinx”
Thanks for watching a bit. Sometimes when we aim to be inclusive it still ends up excluding some folks.
@@kalahealthandwellness it is cringy and most of us latinOs reject it. It’s just a way for liberal white people to pretend to be “inclusive”.
Wow! That’s exactly what I said, thankfully most of us don’t need mindless, contrived definitions to love people.
@@bigfoot-id8bv Well said. Thanks for having a convo about it.
@@kalahealthandwellness I'd love to have a convo about it, but you hid my reply ;)
