- Peter Ustinov as Nero from 1951 film "Quo Vadis".
The musical composition's name is "Seikilos epitaph".
Here are the lyrics he sings (thanks VeritasEtSeveritas):
Oh, lambent flame
Oh, force divine
Oh, omnivorous power:
Hail!
None is there swifter to bring destruction,
Yet carefree as a child
Thou with wild breezes playing
The old Troy shall be no more because of thee,
Thou harvester that strips the soil
For men to sow new crops
Oh, lambent flames
Oh, force divine
Oh, omnivorous power
Hail! - Hudba
Peter Ustinov as Nero totally stole the show
Peter Ustinov stole the show in many of his roles. He tended to do that.
"Im totally unprepared"
Also Nero: *Reaches for his harp conveniently placed right next to him*
That is my favorite part. Everything was lying in wait...... Lol! My Throat!
Not only that. Earlier in the movie, it shows that he rehearsed extensively.
Hey, that's totally what I would do.
Reminds me of Ron burgundy with his jazz flute 🤣
Ах, господа, я сегодня, право, не в голосе... 🙂🙂🙂
ustinov is the only reason for me to watch this movie
“Tigellinus! My robe of grief,”
He pioneered karaoke!!.
One of the best moments in all of the Sword and Sandals genre!
So true!
Absolutely love this movie! Amazing acting by Ustivnov and Genn.
I love how Petronius and Seneca look at each other at 0:11
They must have said, "oh no! Here we go again!"😂😂😂
What would Phil Spector and Brian Epstein have said?.
This song has been taken from real ancient piece of music. It is called Seikilos Epitaph and was written about 200BC.
Do you say Nero was a plagiarizer?,
They say, Nero fiddled while Rome was burning but it appears he actually played the harp!
It’s not bad.
Supposedly the oldest tune ever written. That we have discovered at least.

Now, I can't get this out of my head.
He sings like a wounded hound. yes he'd fit perfectly in today's musical scene.
Perfect Remark 100% correct about his music or like a wounded snake
😅
"Cane Nero" means both "Sing, o Nero" (Latin) and "Black Dog" (Italian)
Sadly, Ustinov took voice lessons so he could sound that good.
😂😂😂 yesssssssss
I remember seeing this film when i was 9 or 10, i loved it!
I still do!
Peter Ustinov is brilliant as Nero!
This is CLASS! "My throat" LOL!
"you must be content with that"
"My throat." Get the Divinity some wine!
This needs more UMU
What a genius !!
A God!
Padoru padoru
Peter Ustinov should ve won an oscar for this Nero. This was role of his life. What an masterpiece actor.
One of the all-time greats!
UMU
It just clicked that saber from Last Encore is supposed to be this guy. What the FUCK, Fate.
@NKXAnimer From Saber in anime and game called "Fate/Extra last encore"
Suprema interpretazione di Peter Ustinov !!! Un grande.... grandissimo film..meritava maggiori riconoscimenti !!
The death of Petronius in this movie is like the best death one could have! hahaha his note was omnivorous!
Peter Ustinov was great! I also loved Victor Mature. These biblical epics are wonderful and they sure don't make em like this anymore =(
Cracks me up every time! if you don't laugh at this, you have no soul...
Masterpiece...
One of the best renderings of a roman emperor ever. You have to be a really talented actor to make a villain like Nero lovable...
in the movie is a villain, in real life was loved by the people and hated by the senate.
obviously the popular class was illiterate and could not materially write history.
The best rendering of Nero?? Ustinov was great, but the real Nero was very much loved by the Romans, it was a period of long peace under his government. In addition to that, he returned to Rome immediately when he was told about the fire and offered his help to people, opening the gates of the Palatinum. He was not good, but he wasn’t even a complete monster. Don’t trust movies!
@@bria78 until he made a huge statue of himself and burned part of the city and blamed the Christians afterwards. I don't think Roman Christians appreciated being torn apart by Nero dressed as a wild beast or being covered with tar and lit on fire his gardens. The Apostle Paul was a Roman citizen also, and it is likely Nero beheaded him so I don't think Paul admired him very much either....(he did love him as a Christian to a degree at least striving to be like Jesus Christ who loved even his enemies Perfectly (Matthew 5:44). Paul had a measure of love for his murderer, eventhough the man killed his mother after he had committed incest with her, and also kicked his own preggo wife Pompea to death in the stomach). Don't say he was loved by the Roman's (you weren't around then either, but Seutonius was closer to him than both of us so he is more believable than this film I agree Hollywood lies and embellishes) as the Senate hated the fact that he would demand to sleep with their wives at State dinners or was that "Little Boots" Caligula? I always get confused with Tiberius and his "little fishes," who enjoyed to nibble on his toes in his Hugh Hefner style grotto pedo pool on the Isle of Capri. Powerful elites never change in my poor judgements.
As portrayed by Suetonius, the Roman historian, Nero was totally crazy. If it was a good reign or not, one will never be sure.
History records that when Nero performed on stage for sometimes several days the audience on pain of death was not allowed to leave for any circumstances as that would have been a great insult to the Emperor's genius. Supposedly people feigned death to be carried out and women gave birth in the aisles. However, it is generally agreed that he had real talent, and several of his songs were popular for many decades after his death.
Alot the hatred for him is inaccurate due to the upper class an historians that had contempt for him when in reality the lower class mourned his loss, the next two rulers using him as help for their "campaigns" backs that narrative he wasn't such a self indulged an hated person as the ancient historians want you to believe
I read somewhere that he could actually sing well.
They said sudden earthquake was there as well. 😂 maybe clapping of the earth itself
Umu! That's my Emperor!
The greatest thing about this performance is that Peter Ustinov actually could sing and here he was singing like a douchebag with no ear at all. And that is not easy to do. You do have to concentrate.
"WOW".... Nero, what a ego maniac you were!
I think Ustinov is great and thanks for posting
What an artist is falling down with me! :-)
I loved this actor!!!! So classic a performace!
Justin Bieber should take lessons.
top kek
This is so freaking UMU. pkease add PADORU PADORU and this would be perfect
A fate fan I see
Is it only me or am i finding nothing wrong with Nero's voice?
I love NERON ❤️❤️❤️😂😂😂👏👏👏👏👏
Beats rap.
Živo remek djelo, Peter Ustinov fantastičan u ulozi Nerona!
This must be why Prince John doesn't get a song in Robin Hood.
I belly laughed SO HARD at this statement! LOLOL I hadn't thought about it, but you may be right!
Oh false divine. Lol ! Nero's song is forever burned into my memory. After all, he is The Incendiary ! Lol !
He wasn't any incendiary, this is imaginative propaganda. Nero did not burn Rome down, of course.
This is an uncertainty. What is sure, however, it designed all Christians as culprits for this fire!
Yes, indeed. The people wanted a victim, and the Christians were a suitable one. Everybody hated them.
From what I've read on the subject, it seems that Nero did nothing wrong. The idea that he was the one who burned down Rome comes only a few years later, and it's not 100% supported by evidence.
Those who are ignorant or illiterate will always follow what they pretend to know. The reality is that fire in Ancient Rome was a common accident since many houses were made of wood. Mention should be made that Christians were intensively preaching that the end of Rome would have happened by a "rain of fire". They were also quite extremist causing enough problems to arise suspicion. If they were the guilty ones, in that case they deserved to be punished as criminals - they are generally well known for their sense of destruction of everything which is different from their "faith". With Nero, Rome knew glory and wisdom - he was a theatre and art lover and his voice is said to had been divine.
He's a genius and I want a lyre/harp like that to wake up the neighbors at 3 am
It's called a kithara. There might be rebuilds of that Ancient instruments around.
I LOVED this scene..even if I thought nero was such an asshole! :) wow.. I haven't seen this in about 20yrs and lord knows I've sung this damned song a couple hundred times in my life :)
love that old tyme music
Nero was actually an excellent emperor super popular amongst the poor and middle classes (the sources we have insulting him were from rich aristocrats). He was also an excellent diplomat
He did kill his mother, his wife, his wife’s brother, his tutor (Agrippina, Octavia, Britannicus and Seneca, respectively) plus boatloads of other people. Doesn’t sound that great to me.
@@gryphon50c56 Least bloodthirsty Roman citizen
Can't get much more hilariously and brilliantly camp than this in 1951! It's too bad he didn't do more animated stuff. He was brilliant in Robin Hood. Mother! *Sucks thumb*
I am totally unprepared...yeah right ! LOL !

He does look rather omnivorous.
My 2 favorite Emperors. Peter Ustinov and Ian McDiarmid!
The sound is awesome
You are not musically inclined or perhaps death get a hearing aid
Beautiful composition a triumph your highness.
The future emperor Vespasian almost lost his life once when he fell asleep at one of Nero's performances.
just imagine than Vespasian sing : "Ooooh the stinking loo... Oooh the force of crap... Buuuthooh a moneeeey isn't smelly.... Haaail!"
Pilum1000 lmao
This is actually a catchy song.
Peter Ustinov bares a striking resemblance to the actual Nero. If you look at Roman coins of that period you 'll notice that they look very much the same, like twins.
Thanks! That was new information to me. I have been wondering. :-)
A melhor interpretação de Nero. Grande ator. Amo esse cara demais!
Im just here out of curiosity while searching for Nero singing padoru.
Genius!!!
This is a really good song actually. It's got a good melody.
Nero is my favorite vocalist. haha. A bastard, but a good singer...haha
Nero was in Antium when the fire started According to Tacitus, upon hearing news of the fire, Nero rushed back to Rome to organize a relief effort, which he paid for from his own funds. After the fire, Nero opened his palaces to provide shelter for the homeless, and arranged for food supplies to be delivered in order to prevent starvation among the survivors.
Thank you very much. :-)
I find this hilarious for some reason
there would be many good actors to portray Nero. But Peter Ustinov brings out the real character of Nero.
More cowbell please!....
and also a great human being and humanist too.
Neron is very inspiring he the best !
Calls Grammy!
Why si little thumbs up??
This is great vocalist of our generation
Una de las más grandes actuaciones de todos los tiempos a cargo del inefable Peter Ustinov.
this part kills me
I hope they make as one such as this....
What a great gesture 01:20
Perhaps, but he finally got one for Spartacus, best supporting actor, beating out even Sir Lawrence Olivier in the same film. Well deserved for a great actor.
And another one for “Topkapi” four years later

I don't speak english good enough to really hear just what he sings. If someone would be so kind to write down the words, I would be greatful. :-)
Paraphrasing another comment: artistically Nero was 20 centuries ahead.
😘😘😘
Thank you very much for posting! And thanks VeritasEtSeveritas for the information.
Do you have any information on the piece Nero sing while Rome burns? Was it composed by Rozsa or is it ancient like this one? Thank you very much!
Hail Nero ..✊👊💪👍
Might this part from Mr. Ustinov be an influence to other "crazy" roles, such as the Joker ones, by Heath Ledger or Joaquin Phoenix??
There will never be a Nero in cinema as this one from the great Peter Ustinov
Aw, mei ropui
Aw chakna Pathian
QUO VADIS. 💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚
@Allocator2008 no it is omnivorous (not omnipotent), it's a joke within the film because earlier when nero is composing this very song petronius corrects nero and says omnipotent not omnivorous, and nero comes back and asks is "nomnipotent is better"
