This interview is fascinating because it shows how complicated this subject is. People applauded when, Ali, a black man, effectively defended racial segregation, yet a white person saying the same thing would instantly lose their career, then or now. What he is actually saying is that people value their own culture, not their own race. Judging by the comments below it seems that many people agree with his point of view, although he subsequently amended it. I agree with Parkinson, who says that we are more malleable than other animals, but I think Ali puts his case well. I wish we were free to debate this openly but there are too many prescriptions on what we can and can't say at present.

This is indeed separatism. Ali's metaphor of "blue birds want to be with blue birds, red birds want to be with red birds' has some explanatory value, until one remembers that humans are the same species, no matter what the color. So, as compelling as his argument is, it is based on a false equivalency.

Ali was a brilliant man in many ways. Like earlier in this same interview he annihilates conventional attitudes to boxing in a few short sentences. But this segregationist doctrine given to him by The Nation of Islam was completely at odds with his civil rights work (and, in my opinion, his whole personality). A very understandable reaction to having grown up in a white supremacist society that hated his people. Like Malcolm X, he later renounced statements like this.

@@ThaCyNiQ And he's completely right. When H.Sapiens reached Europe, he found the remnants of H.Neanderthalensis, and interbred with them, gaining in cranial mass, losing the prognathic nose and jaw, as well as shortening and straightening the femur bone.
South of the Sahara Desert, H.Sapiens met and interbred with other archaic hominids, such as H.Erectus and H.Habilis. As a result, the nose widened and flattened, the jaw and nose became _more_ prognathic (no, seriously. Take a good look at a profile view of an African woman's face some time. That mouth and nose almost looks like a flat-out _muzzle_ or _snout_ at times), and so on.
Both groups have progressed on different paths, acquiring differing features and living in completely different biomes long enough to qualify as separate species. That taxonomists don't recognize this shows dishonesty.

If you think we should be like birds you deny our humanness, we are the children of God, and we will create. To deny evolution is to deny progress, which is simply the road to extinction. Evolution is happening, and continues, till Gods will be done. When Ali changed his name he still stayed living in the past, it would be better he renamed as, Lionel (The Champ) Bellguardis, or maybe Titum Collosifor from the world Humania. That's full of logical fallacies. Different species of birds stay appart because they re of different species and therefore can't have offsprings, by definition. Dogs do mate even if they look different because they are of the same specie. And even if he was right, he is assuming that we should do like animals, is this always true? Should we always take animals as examples?
He says god made us this way, this still remains to be proven. Anyway, even if we didn't like something about ourselves we would just make up a story saying that that thing is so because of a fault in humans and not thanks to God, like our different languages that are supposedly the result of Babel. We make up the stories we want depending on the conclusion we want to reach.
He does what he wants but he shouldn't tell others to think like him.
And yes, he was a product of his time and culture, but so were Napoleon and Hitler and we still hold them responsible for their opinions, and I think we are right to do so.

    • @budgetcoinhunter

And the lion and tiger can breed and produce the massive tigon, or the liger. Does that then make them the same species? What about dogs, wolves and coyotes? I'm sure there are coywolfdogs out there. Which canid do you leave your child with, a Labrador or a Grey Wolf?
Hell, our own history has us H. Sapiens interbreeding with H. Neanderthalensis in Europe. Do Neanderthals suddenly jump species and become H. Sapiens then?
