- Bill wasn't very happy about the trick they played on Oliver Reed, and almost didn't agree to go on the show. You can see he's uncomfortable in this video. The Word was a Youth TV show aimed at 16-18 year olds.
This video is owned by Channel 4 Television, please visit the unofficial The Word site

"You've lost me somewhere along the way"
What a tool.
Exactly...what Bill said make perfect sense.
I like how Bill laughs at him right after he says that. That’s what Bills comedy was about, laughing at people like this interviewer.
Heh, I was just thinking, ok, I'll comment, because this guy is a serious tool.
Terry Christian : never exactly the sharpest tool in the box.
No. A tool is useful. He's not even useful.
How NOT to interview bill hicks
What a horrible waste of Bill's time. And ours.
"i have the right to choose" Bill Hicks. "You lost me somewhere along the way." Average person.
Fuck
Bill,"I should have the right to choose what I do with my life". Interviewer, "Sorry you lost me there".
Bill is too real for this show.
yeah...the crowd and presenters don't know how to react.
You're expecting too much of a comedian
Bill is way too smart for this interviewer.
You're expecting too much of a comedian.
Dear god...this would be like watchind Justin Bieber interview Mozart.
Perfect example!👌
I cringe!
'You've lost me somewhere along the way' Bills bursts out laughing, haha
The presenter was such a fake cunt in this interview.
@@travisyanez7422 Typical leftist
Poor Bill. Doing the promo circuit. I bet he hated every minute of it.
arfer Hated every minute except for the ones spent sitting next to that gorgeous woman.
Slomofogo
What the fuck???
horrible thought
Terry Christian just had a face that you wanted to punch. He literally gave Hicks no help in using his material in the interview. Christian basically said he only got the job because he was from Manchester and that was cool in the 90's because of Oasis.
Because of Oasis😒??? Are you sure???
Yeah, Oasis weren’t big when this was broadcast - but the Stone Roses, the Smiths, the Mondays, the Charlatans. So yeah maybe. I can’t think of any other reason they’d want him!
Happy mondays and stone roses you mean
Terry Christian had a face you wouldn't get tired pissing on 😡
The following night he played Birmingham Town Hall in England. I was there. He was asked about this show. He wasn't impressed by it. He had cancer at the time but didn't yet know it. After he flew back to the States, a month or so later, he went to see a doctor, and that's when he was given the sad news.
Nice avatar :)
ToneGarvey We could be twins.
Nope, he was diagnosed in 1993 after returning from Australia.
***** i was at the town hall too. changed my life.
Saw him at the Dome Thearte in Brighton, same tour. Brilliant.
Poor Hicks. Having to listen to this guy completely miss the point of his jokes. This interview is probably what gave him cancer!
This must have been difficult for Hicks. Talk about oil and water..
A crap audience talking amongst themselves, an interviewer with ants in his pants and celebrities looking uncomfortable. That was The Word haha
+NICK SMITH yup
the interviewer doesnt even deserve to be in bills presence.
This show was one of the most mean spirited programs ever on tv. I hated everything about it.
Id do anything to be on tv 😂
@@tobinakatarx Remember the dude who ate worms in that segment?
Terry Christian is so unconvincing and in-genuine in his questioning.... Poor Bill...
Watching this, feeling the tension that is so thick one can cut it with a knife, I just can't help but feel sorry for Bill Hicks during this interview.
the pitch of the presenters voice is like nails on a chalk board
Im surprised at how disrespectful Terry Christian is towards Bill Hicks!
I'm telling ya. I've seen other interviews he did. He's not being condescending/arrogant or patronizing.....he's just a douche with a faux personality.
Yes he is.
I personally beleive that's how all English/UK tv personalities are. They talk down to the guests for a cheap hollow laugh.
Bill Hicks isn't for everyone
BILL HICKS, a man way ahead of his time. R.I.P
Stewart Lee has let himself go!
lolololol! :-D
Fuck, I thought it was him!
Too bad we Americans could not handle him.
He was great.
Judging by this clip, the Brits weren't much better at it...
There wasn't much to handle, an overrated comic from the nineties.
Bill was such a loss to this earth. He spoke the truth and had such wise words hidden in his comedy.
Rest in peace Bill, we all surely wish there was more like you here now!
A rare soul indeed!
Never mind Terry...You didn't know you were interviewing a legend at the time. I am sure you would do a great interview now.
For anybody who's never been to Manchester, everybody in Manchester is like the presenter of this programme. Everybody.
HAhahahahahahaha............
that's not true
I'm from Manchester and you lost me somewhere along the line there
465marko as someone who has lived there but ain’t from there. That’s not true.
He's the only manc I've ever disliked
It’s like Alan Partridge but with Liam Gallagher’s voice and Stewart Lee’s face
RIP Bill Hicks, much missed. :'( [el'sda2].
being from england and seeing this tool interview a legend,i had doubts from the start
This is 30 years ago 😢
EVERYONE seems uncomfortable except the host . . lol
I don't know what you people are on about. That's exactly how I want Bill Hicks to be interviewed. That pressure revealed a part of his personality wide open and does much to demystify him in terms identifiable to the public. That in turn does much service to his legacy through the honoring of what is essentially his message; by proving himself fallible and vulnerable to the same pressures that govern and affect us all. He also knew his limits and did not let his ego overstep the situation; a good doze of both patience and self realization is at play here.
you sir, are a prophet
"The Word was a Youth TV show aimed at 16-18 year olds." - I always remembered The Word as a pretty adult show.
This guy was better than anyone out there in USA at the time.
Eddie Murphy, George Carlin, Richard Pryor, Robin Williams, and Sam Kinison would like to have a word with you.
The USA never produced a better comedian than Carlin. GOAT.
The Word was great! I really enjoyed watching it back in the day when I came home from a piss up.
"You've lost me somewhere along the way"... WTF?!! Stupidity like that should not be broadcast.
His name is Terry Christian, always tries to act clever with little remarks even when most of the time it's him who comes across as stupid.
interviewer has zero interview skills
I agree
'You've lost me somewhere along the way' not the first time Terry...
love how the host wasnt listening...brilliant
The German bird really didn't realise she was sat next to a messenger from the light side. Terry is coco-loco. Can't imagine this was much fun for Bill.
I can't believe Bill went on The Word! He's well known for brow-beating hecklers, or any others that pissed him off, so I wouldn't have thought he'd want to be a part of such after-pub chaos. Also, I'm surprised he tolerated being interviewed by Terry Christian, who was not known for his wit!
I thought people were over-reacting about the hosts being awful when I watched the Oliver Reed segment since I thought they were just uncomfortable dealing with him, but now after watching this, I can see they really are completely hopeless.
Pre internet promo, hey ho, we were just mesmerised that the bloke from the CDs was actually in the UK!
Love hicks, I would love to have seen him live.
That interviewer was indeed a bad one...what a shame
Perhaps one of the most obnoxious interviewers in British history.
Bill Hicks is perhaps one of the most obnoxious comedians in history.
@@BROCK-hq9dn Well we all have different tastes, I find Stewart Lee very funny, but many don't.
@@suzesiviter6083 Stewart Lee is far more amusing than Bill Hicks.
@@BROCK-hq9dn I would agree, in fact I think he is perhaps the best British Standup in history, yet most will fail to see the genius of his humour, but that's the society we live in, people expect fast fire comics.
@@suzesiviter6083 People still want comics to be hilarious and entertaining in the culture we live in. They don't mind if the comedian tells the jokes slowly or has a fast-fired delivery, as long as the punchline is funny.
The legendary Bill Hicks 🙏R.I.P
Not much of a legend and not much of a legacy left behind.
@@aleclaskaris6271 I started to reply to your previous comment about the genius Bill Hicks, and I thought naahhh waste of effort. But another comment appeared. . . so I’m wondering who you would regard as a comic legend?
Reminds me of the time Ian Brown said to Steve Jones "Do you want knocking out from here? Or do you want me to come over there or do it?" Hey that was channel 4 too!
@TheEvilelvis89 Perfect description mate....spot on!
Bill said we can swap flats for the summer and HOLIDAY got made. amazing guy.
3:50 the moment bill realises hes wasting his time
@iamlawrencebricher Thanks! It makes a lot of sense within the context.
Bill hicks was the least problematic guest they had
Wish bill wouldnt of used bits from his stand up he seemed a genuinely funny and cool dude
I can't believe I remember this show. I was very young when it aired lol. Must have been about 10-11 when it was on lol, maybe even before that.
Bill almost walked away from this show before it even began!
Terry Christian is such a fanny...
Fucking hell how time have changed ! Good old late night channel 4 haaaa !
George Bernard Shaw was an Irish play writer. You were still cool Bill.
I read that Bill wanted to walk out when he found out how the producers were going to set up Oliver Reed. Bill was coaxed into staying. I remember watching the show at the time of broadcast.
I wonder what the producers said to Bill to make him stay? And if I remember correctly Olly Read was made to sing pissed out of his brains like a performing animal in a circus . . . shameful television. I’m sure The Word had a segment called ‘people will do anything to get on t.v.’
@@FUNKINETIK
I think it was his managers who coaxed Bill into staying as he was still establishing himself in Britain and Ireland at the time. I remember reading about it in an early biography - can’t remember what it was called. I do remember Bill turning his head away when Reed started “performing” - and the show did take advantage of an alcoholic for a cheap laugh. Bill had been sober himself for at least a few years by that point and knew the score.
@@edwardmulholland7912 at least he turned his head away. I watched ‘American - The Bill Hicks Story’ for the first time last year, a really well put together film of the great man. His ride on the roller coaster of life was way too short, thankfully his spirit lives on.
I did as well, but have 100 % total recall after watching this.....
As a kid growing up in Manchester watching this show behind my mum's back in the early 90's I never understood why everyone wanted to physically assault Terry Christian, now looking back years later I fully understand.
He atleast found his charisma later in life, but it clearly took him a while.
Reading the description it says the word was aimed at 16-18 year olds. Nope it was a 'post-pub' audience, probably 18-34.
I can't think of any worse to interview Bill
Bill's intellect has always the fool present. His comedy will not be for everyone but his intelligence is for all to absorb.
Loved it..
Interesting seeing the trolls on the box; never would have made much of an association between them + the 1990s 'bubble' aesthetic ! Mind you, both are essentially 60s/70s revival !
2:03 "you've lost me somewhere along the way"
Pity the Video Clip didn't play longer ☹
It'd be great to have seen Billy conversing with Oliver 🤗
☘🇮🇪☘
.
you can, there's another video on youtube showing Ollie.
Hi there, i'm trying to translate this video into spanish but i'm having a bit of trouble to understand the interviewer.
can someone please tell what's he saying at 5:11-5:14?
Hicks is probably the only REAL person in the room..
Great Comedian, R.I.P Bill....
You sir have typed the best comment on this video.
Wow, and here I thought human-like robots were a recent thing, yet here one is 25 years ago interviewing Bill Hicks....
Fucking hell The Word was utterly dire. Still, I'd welcome it back in a heartbeat over the fucking One Show or, as my father likes to call it, Blue Peter for grown-ups.
Can't believe I saw all the revolting 'hopefuls' and missed this interview with Bill.
I would have commented on how much of a flamboyant guy the host is right off the back to ease himself.
@jimmyhyhat "You've lost me somewhere along the way.."
Bill: *stunned silence* *scoff/laugh*
I felt the same way.
Katie was dealing with Oliver Reed which was more difficult than it sounded.
Im still thinkin of Oliver Dickens,.... I loved him cos he could laugh at himself in real time man... we could trade flats .... god bless you man
Make no mistake about it. If Bill would have lived long enough and realised more of the British culture he would have ripped us a new one for sure...G...
yep....I heartily agree there.
How uncomfortable is Hicks right now - but he's soldiering on.
Yup, I know. But you know what? It's kind of reassuring to see Bill's fallibilities on rare occasions. No one is infallible.
And you could tell right from the beggining that this is the last place Bill wants to be. He was so much better doing more personal interviews, where he was calm relaxed and open. Then again alot of great artists/comedians are reserved in these types of interviews.
Terry Christian gets lost along the way here because he cant be bothered to even listen to his guest. Congratulations, well done there, a gold star on the wall chart for Terry.
I didn’t realise how bad the word was until watching some recent clips. Hick’s didn’t look impressed by the way the treated Oliver Reed. Really a bunch of kids dealing with legends. Painful to watch,
@bigcityjunkie Terry Christian is at the peak of his career now, doing his wry witty voice overs for street wars on sky at 1 am
This show was terrible
anyone know where i can see the rest of this . got even more interesting when oliver reed came out
must be nice to have material prepped for every question of the interview.
Love Bill..Christ the colour design of the Word is bonkers. Its the world of Pic N Mix.
Have you seen the stage sets on French TV talk shows? Even the serious panel shows have sets that are almost aggressively tacky and garish. Were it not for You Tube, I would not have known that this has become the trend on European television.
Haniff Din Dude, there's a difference between a blend of psychedelic colors and splashes of tacky shit. This right here is tacky shit.
Are you referring to Robitussin? Cause I've gotten real fucking high on that. Swallowed about 50 cough gels then curled up into fetal position for 4 hours and telepathically talked to the planet.
Haniff Din If I could get my hands on any of that, I would. The acid has all dried up. It's a psychedelic wasteland these days.
I wish I did. I live in America, home of the "War on drugs". So yeah, like I said, it's a wasteland here. That's why so many Americans, like me, resort to tripping on things like Robitussin.
bill hicks is the man and it's probably because he was somewhat before my time but i find it hard to believe that he is accepted as one of the greatest. maybe i just can't appreciate his originality cos so many comedians i grew up with evolved from his humour, that seems the case with alot of things, eg. music, movies, etc. i'm making this up as i go but i just had an epiphany. we need to treat art as we treat a person. don't judge, just try your hardest to understand and appreciate it for what it is, while at the same time question the underlying motives. don't put any one on a pedestal over another. this is what you do with products and because people are far more than products, when they are treated as such they are actually devalued and less appreciated, as is their art. this is a good example, the hype killed bill hicks and i'll never forgive it. fuck the hype!
It looked like Bill was thinking;
"Will I swallow this glass of water or spit at the fuckKnuckles.."
Terry Christian (The poor mans Stewart lee)is a year older than Bill. Don't tell anyone though! But anyway have to say Stewart lee carpet remnant world was spot on about Bill's 2 hour of material.
Terry Christian interviewed people just so that he could listen to the sound of his own voice, I thought everyone knew this?
@greyreview where are you from bigboy?
4:40 Come on, Mark Twain, Hemingway, Steinbeck, Tennessee Williams... don't sell your people short, Bill.
Agreed.. Shel Siverstein, Barnum...?
"you've lost me there"
WHAAAT!?? How simple was Hick's point and the host couldn't even follow that?
@Warpath2198 I kinda hear what you are saying about socialism and the nanny state, but I speak on behalf of everyone when I say that the interviewer in no way represents British people. B.Hicks was very much loved over here in the U.K. and I think that he was one of Americas greatest comedians and a really great human being.
