    Do you think a saltwater trolling motor would be worth the extra money? Found some Newport nv series saltwater 36 lb for a few $$ more. Thanks David

    • @Jacemang_Outdoors
      @Jacemang_Outdoors  Před 5 měsíci

      If it gives peace of mind and you have the funds to spend on it may be worth it for you. Another aspect to consider is power to weight ratio. Running a bigger motor adds more weight which doesnt translate to real world speed. Creates increased drag and forces kayak to sit deeper on waterline. For me personally I dont see a need to forego the extra cost. The internals all work the same, its an electric motor with a housing and someones name brand on the side. At some point they all fail, rotator spinning in the stator rubbing on brush blocks slowly causes wear. Hope this answer helps but everyone has specific budgets and needs, ultimately youll have to decide.

      Just in the process of adapting that same trolling motor (MINN KOTA Endura C2 30lb) to my kayak. In dismantling the MINN KOTA, I noted that 14 AWG is the thickest wire in it. In fact, the middle speeds rely on the 16 AWG yellow while the slowest speeds rely on the 18 AWG white wire (thinnest of all). Long story short, I'm using 12 AWG for my external extension wires. @@Jacemang_Outdoors

    • @Jacemang_Outdoors

      The motor is locked into position. The kayak will run true(straight) when it is being propelled by the motor. I use the rudder to steer or make small micro adjustments when needed. The straps only purpose is to keep the tilt lever engaged so the motor can kick up freely if it impacts an object while in motion.

    not to be rude but to actually waterproof you should buy the proper flex connectors with a female adapter when attaching flex to a junction box.. your connection will not last long as is. Also use conductive grease on electrical connections to prevent corrosion from the saltwater. best of luck.

      I dont think your rude at all. I appreciate the advice. Its worked well with no issues for 2 n half years in harsh saltwater conditions so its sealed enough for my needs. Was meant to be a budget build, brush motors have a relatively low life-use in general. Will be moving to a Newport motor soon as Im now an ambassador for the company.

    So not locking the "tilt" function of the motor doesn't affect its operation? Every other video ive seen has it locked.

    • @Jacemang_Outdoors
      @Jacemang_Outdoors  Před 5 měsíci +2

      The forward thrust of the motor against the water maintains constant pressure forward. If you hit the ground or an object, motor kicks up freely. I keep the tilt unlocked for those reasons.

    • @seewhyem
      @seewhyem Před 4 měsíci +1

      if you're going forward it will work just fine without the lock. Going into reverse is when you'll have a problem without the lock. The motor will kick out of the water and will limit your ability to reverse quickly.

    • @Jacemang_Outdoors
      @Jacemang_Outdoors  Před 4 měsíci +1

      @@seewhyem Thats pretty accurate. Pros and cons, Id rather have the motor kickup some in reverse than suffer a catastrophic failure hitting something going fwd. The weight of the motor will keep it down in lower speeds, if I need to reverse quickly which is extremely rare, I can assist with pedal drive.

    • @seewhyem
      @seewhyem Před 4 měsíci +1

      @@Jacemang_Outdoorsyup, agreed. If you don't use reverse then removing it would make it easier. I personally use reverse all the time so I kept my lock function. I used a pulley from home depot and a paracord to engage and disengage the lock lever.

Ive seen several mounts built using star board or other inexpensive dense plastics. Wiring is dirt cheap. The Minn Kota trolling motor can be purchased from Walmart, Academy, etc. for around $100. A fraction of the cost of competing pre-assembled options, just takes a little time.

      Ive had boats, they definitely have their place. That question requires a lengthy answer but Ill give you some highlights. Kayak community is engaging and I enjoy the comradery. There is a large kayak tournament scene and I also enjoy the competitive elements. As far as utility, kayaks have less moving parts, less maintenance/malfunctions/corrosion. Theyre more sea-worthy relative to size. I have more launch options including the surf to fish offshore, better access to shallow water. An intangible element I personally enjoy is a closer connection with the environment and the ability to get directly on top of fish without spooking them or the need to disembark a vessel and wade fish. Hope this helps.

      Its not really an opinion, its a requirement. 20 years experience in aerial search and rescue operations, Ive pulled countless people out of the drink that were able to be identified and located by their hull IDs after falling overboard. Although it might be a hassle, registering a motorized vessel is a law and has merit that extends even to those that dont understand why.
