  • How I made a DIY trolling mount for my kayak. Also, how I put state boat registration numbers on my kayak permanently.
    I added a DIY trolling motor mount to my Lifetime Teton 116 Angler Pro kayak /Yukon 116 kayak. This motor mount can be modified to fit almost any Kayak with built-in rod holders.

    My first time Kayaking and this Kayak held strong. czcams.com/users/postUgkx4k5UrhC3v_Y4hIEaXLGvHcN5a5aBmZNB The water got pretty rough as a speed boat zipped by me, and the Kayak withstood it (I expected to be capsized). The Ores are very easy to put together, the pump worked beautifully. the seats are a bit hard to sit in after a while (I recommend sitting on the floor). after reading the reviews I was very scared it'd get a hole in it, the material is very strong and durable. The Air valve may need a small Phillips head screwdriver to adjust, other than that, it's well worth the money!(update)I've gone Kayaking in 3 Lakes and 2 rivers totaling about 40 miles. the kayak had two holes and they patched easily and no other problems can't wait for kayaking season this year!

    Great instructional video. BTW looks like you are enjoying retirement life as well. I've been retired since 2011, like you, enjoy fishing from kayak in both ocean and lake. Anyway, what was the length of the bolt you used to construct your motor mount? I'll be getting a Newport Vessel 36lb trolling motor. Thanks again for putting this on CZcams.

    • @HotLeadretired
      @HotLeadretired  Před rokem +1

      Thanks for watching. I used 5 inch bolts. I only used the length because I used spacers between the pvc pipe and the board to make the board set level. Some kayaks there is no need for spacers, so shorter bolts will work.

    • @HotLeadretired
      @HotLeadretired  Před 2 dny

      You will have to rig something like pvc pipe connected to both motors. So when you steer one the other moves in sync. Probably have to get a bigger battery. You might be on to something. It would probably turn tighter.

      It was the best setup I’d found, period! I knew that I had most everything I needed to construct it in my garage. I was about to cut the video short and head out there when I heard you mention that you had to register your kayak in your state. I live in Illinois where everything short of driftwood has to be registered so I went online and checked. No surprise here, yes, if I installed a trolling motor I would have to register my kayak, number it and pay yearly fees. CRAP! I may need to think this over a little while. lol
      Thanks again and I repeat, you found an excellent solution to the mounting bracket problem.
      Thank you,

Then when I mounted the motor to the 2x4 I cut off the excess leaving a few inches past the clamp mount on the motor. Thanks for watching.

      I just bought a 4 foot long 2x4. I installed the 2x4 to the PVC pipe and attached my motor and made a line about 2 inches longer. I also marked where to cut my PVC pipe even with the edge of the 2x4. So, I didn’t even measure anything.

    Is that actual rod holders you used on the board? Do you remember the size of the pipe?

    • @HotLeadretired
      @HotLeadretired  Před rokem

      Yes, it’s actual rod holders I bought at Walmart 3 bucks apiece. I just drilled a hole through them and mounted with wood screws. If you’re talking about the pipe I used for bushings to level up the rod holders I’m not sure. I think 3/4” but they only need big enough to go over the wood screws. Btw the rod holders work great. Tip. Mount them close to the outside edge of your kayak it will make it easy to reach around and grab and replace while on the water. Thanks for watching.

    • @raybrdjr
      @raybrdjr Před rokem +1

      @@HotLeadretired , yes, I was talking about the pipes that go in the rod holders on the kayak. I almost bought them things a few minutes ago but they don’t look like they’ll fit in the rod holders on my kayak. Thanks for responding😊

    • @HotLeadretired
      @HotLeadretired  Před rokem +1

      Oh, they are 1 inch pvc pipe. They fit a little lose. 1.25” fit to tightly. Later on I added rubber bands to the end of the pipe. I just wrapped a few (4-5 ) rubber bands around the end of the pipe that goes in the rod holder. It tightens them up and really works great. I improved upon my mods as the need arises.

    • @HotLeadretired
      @HotLeadretired  Před 11 měsíci

      czcams.com/video/ROR_eTuQO9I/video.html. The biggest problem mounting it with the optional kayak mount is the motor rotation when you turn it on. The one point of contact is not strong enough with the plastic brackets in my opinion. Watch this video. This was the reason I made my own, it’s much sturdier.

      Retirement is great. I love it. I still have Obamacare, since 2014, and it has actually dropped in price. $105.00 a month. Mainly because my son dropped off because of his age and he has employer insurance. So it’s just me now. So, I’m 58 years old now. I’ve been retired 8 years as of March 1, 2022. I have 7 years till I can get social security and Medicare. I think Obamacare will still be around.

      Well, after you get used to it, it isn’t that hard. If you mean going in circles while drifting just lift the motor out of the water. Adding a rudder help me out a lot. It just took me some time to get used to turning it. After that it runs great.

    • @HotLeadretired
      @HotLeadretired  Před 9 měsíci

      Is yours mounted at the center of your kayak? If it is it needs to be more toward the rear, sitting behind you. If it’s mounted behind you just make small steering adjustments on low speed. It will go straight you just have to make little adjustments until you find the spot it goes straight.
