Installation & Performance - Installing Electric Trolling Motor on Kayak

- Visuals with brief description of how to install an electric trolling motor to a Jackson Cruise 12 sit on top kayak. (Update below) This is a side mount method that has some consequence to steering and balance performance. Steering is slightly restricted and the kayak tips when making turns, especially when turning quickly.
UPDATE** Aug 2021... I recall steering wasn't the best, but I found it is much worse that I recalled. I hadn't used this for a couple years, and mostly ran in a straight line for destination hunting. I appreciate how you kept it simple and just drilled the board into the kayak, thus making a mount for the trolling motor. Its really simple! People over complicate things alot of times. Like and subbed!
Thanks for comment. One of the reasons I started documenting projects is because many of the help videos out there are so long winded. My goal as been to keep them short, and edit out the excess.
How did you drill, mount and seal the board that mounts to the hull? Thank you
I drilled tiny pilot holes and just screwed in the stainless wood screws. No sealer necessary since it's tight seal with plastic. All other screws used by manufacturer to mount accessories were the same way.
@@RogerBindl I found that I had to go through and dab some E6000 on all the factory screws to prevent water from entering the hull 🤷♂️
@@MyChaoticFishing I was concerned about that at 1st, but my Jackson kayak has been great. They use quite a few screws on attachments but I've never had a drop of water get through - even from the screws in my 2x4 attachment. I used the same type of screws they used.

Thanks. That means a lot to me. I feel the same about dragged out videos. That's partly why I do these whenever I'm working on new projects. Sometimes I go overboard, but I try to keep them short and to the point.

Last year I started thinking I'd prefer a pedal kayak, and finally got a chance to play with one for extended time. Turns out the electric motor was good decision because of the long trips I use it for. But, I'd still like to get a pedal kayak.

Facts. Went out today to test trolling motor. I actually prefer 25% throttle over 100% on 65lb thrust.. I still pick up my paddle to help with positioning but overall very happy. I should have done it sooner. :D
I've seen a good many installs. Nice to see the results in action.
I hadn't seen performance video's before, so the results were interesting to me... It handles well, but can be tipsy when quickly turning side mounted motor, and it does turn slower with motor in mid-section.
I have my 2022 Hoodoo impulse 120, mirage drive. Which I love. It's fast, plenty of storage, and 8 can walk all over my kayak. I'm 5ft 7 155 lbs. But I purchased my 2020 Suzuki 2.5hp outboard, 15" short shaft, and it weighs approximately 28lbs. I thought I was getting the Jonny bass boats 100, that's why I purchased the outboard, because I fish the mangroves, backcountry, and flats in the Florida keys. So I love the 2.5 Suzuki. But I did add the Yak-Attack outriggers. They have hard plastic floats, with aluminum arms, that also fold in. My kayak is extremely stable without them. But if you add outriggers, your trolling motor and kayak, will not lean to one side. The 30 to 45 lb thrust trolling motors, weigh the same as the 2.5 outboard. But I am planning on going with a Newport vessels 2hp or 3hp electric outboard. That'll mount on my stern, because my kayak is motor ready, and pre-drilled. 🌊 🎣

That's what used to happen to me with duck hunting. I'd paddle upstream in the morning, return for lunch, and maybe go back once or twice in the afternoon. My arms would be shot.

I’ve seen this method in many videos and just couldn’t get myself to do it on the side. I don’t quite want to spend the $$ for an autopilot system and mount up front. I came up with a killer way to easily mount on back AND maintain steering and control from the seat 🤘

Need to get you a bullnose rudder. Will drastically improve your steering and clamps easily to shaft of motor. $40.

We use it probably a dozen days each year on our small raft.-original review- We got this motor the other day and tested it out. I don't have anything to compare it to, but it seems good to me. It has all the features advertised - the motor housing is metal. We will see how it performs longer term and I will revise this review if needed. Some initial observations:- Good thrust, moves our boat around really well- It comes with a circuit breaker but no switch - so there's no way to kill the motor other than yanking the connection off the battery. I installed an inline switch.- The mount bracket is plastic and I worry it might break- There are a number of plastic parts that I worry about, but the most important ones are metal or some kind of composite

That's great. Almost what I want to do, but for calm sea. I believe a larger motor is needed. But I am convinced it is doable and fairly simple if I am allowed to say. Have nice trips!
This small motor is a bit slow, but works out well... so long as I go in a straight line.
Roger, I'm considering two kayaks, one is more expensive but I can rear mount my motor. Considering some stability issues would you still recommend a side-mounted setup?
I would say it depends on how stable your kayak is, and how good your balance is. For me the stability wasn't an issue. My kayak is wide, heavy, stable, and I feel very comfortable with stability. Turning the side mounted motor quickly is just something to be away of - especially on high speed. I'd do it again; it works great. The kayak would maneuver better if the motor was back further, but that creates other problems.
I am thinking of doing this with my old Cuda kayak. I watched both of your videos on the steering issues, but I just want something to get me from point A to point B. I will paddle from there on out. I wonder is a rudder would help much?
It does work good for point to point, and that was the primary reason I added the motor. I'd take multiple trips up river during the day but my arms would wear down after an hour or so of paddling. This got me to the destination where I did just that... paddle once I got there.
@@RogerBindl I live in east central Florida and used to do a lot of saltwater fishing in the Mosquito and Indian River Lagoons. I'm getting older and have had arthritis issues with my shoulders so I thought this might help in covering longer distances. I don't mind paddling once I get to where I want to fish.
@@retiredguyadventures6211 It was fairly inexpensive plus easy and quick to do, so I was happy with it. I thought of adding more controls and perhaps rigging it to go on the back, but that was expensive and way more work and time. I don't use it a lot but I do like to paddle.

I used wood screws to screw directly into the kayak. All the other hardware, from the factory, was done that way so it seemed to make sense and has worked fine all these years.

I wondered about that, but I'm still wrestling with the idea of how to tip the motor up and down if it's too far back to reach.

Do I need to have a battery box that vents for my lithium battery? I’m worried it could get hot while using my trolling motor. Could I get away with storing it in a dry bag?
I'm not sure about lithium. I've read you don't want them to be submerged in water. I use the box to secure my battery so it doesn't fall in water if tipped.

I’m going to give this a try. What screws did you attach the 2x4 with? And did you need anchors or reinforcement?
I used fairly large size stainless steel (or brass - I forget) wood screws - #12 maybe, and just long enough to go through kayak wall about 1/2". I didn't use anchors or reinforcement. Everything else is attached to the kayay with similar screws and the material seems sturdy enough as is.

I'm mostly okay with the roll. It takes a few minutes to get used to it. But, the maneuvering is fairly bad. I have a card popup link to the video on maneuvering. It appears at about 15 seconds in. Top right corner. Its good going straight, but he kayak turns really slow.

Side mount works much better on a kayak with a rudder - you steer with the rudder and basically keep the motor pointed straight ahead.
The rudder does sound better. Jumping forward in time though, if I had it to do over, I'd probably buy one of the fin type paddle kayaks instead. Options and prices have gone down significantly since I bought my kayak - about 5+ years ago? But I love to bike, so the side mount electric option with rudder would be a great option for non bikers - pedal bikers. :)
Can you imagine mounting a small solar panel for continuous battery charging...hmmm.
Have you checked out adding outriggers to add stability? Brocraft marine makes a nice set out of aluminum.
I'm thinking more about figuring out a way to place the motor on the back for maneuvering and stability. I think outriggers would make it difficult navigating in the small river spaces I go through.

Nice video bro I have just fitted a Suzuki as a side mount I would prefer it as a rear mount but I don't have access to the controls
After getting back to the kayak after time away, I definitly agree with preference for rear mount. I didn't use the kayak for much more than out and back trips till this year when I tried fishing. The side mount worked good for crossing lakes and traveling the river, but it didn't maneuver very well for fishing.

@@Ahmetyetkinkayaksbikes I thought about an extension (like a sailboat hicking stick) but I'm not so sure about speed control, and I wouldn't be able to tilt motor out of weeds or shallow water. I fish shallows and some weedy areas.

I realize this is stupid question but what screws did you use to secure 2x ? It looks attached very well for just 4 screw
I believe they were brass wood screws with wide thread. The boats is in another location so I can't say for sure, but I'm sure they were wood screws and either brass or some rustproof metal.

Do you have to register it if you put a lil trolling motor on it? I would imagine not, but never know with pirate police.
You have to register in Wisconsin. I'm not sure about other states. But electric trolling motor makes the boat motorized so it needs a license here. It's fairly inexpensive but kind of a pain. I'm also ordering lights after wanting to go out before sunrise and come back after sunset.

My kayak is pretty stable, and heavy, so I haven't use any outriggers. But the 2x4 was certainly an inexpensive and quick way to mount. It's still holding up fine. :)

These Minn Kota motors, at least the cheaper endura, burn up the switches when they are run at full speed for extended lengths of time. This is what the manufacture told me when I called them. I didnt have mine 6 months, my gas outboard quit on me and I ran the trolling motor for like 15 min on 5 and it quit on me.

Inflateable outriggers will solve your problems. I have one somewhat similar with 55# motor.
Do you have any problem while reverse kayak with it? Because my trolling motor was 55lb in size..and my kayak get turn clockwise direction while i reverse it...
Navigating in reverse doesn't work well with the side mount motor. There's too much side thrust. This set-up works best for going point to point with minor turning.

@@Hatikaukerasstories The only solution I've found is to use the paddle when turning. The other solution would be to stern (rear) mount the motor. It's a bit more costly and complicated solution though.
How did you mount the 2 x 4 to the kayak? What type of bolts/screws...??
They're just 2" wood screws. I can't recall if I drilled small tap holes in the kayak or just screwed them in. That's the same way all of the rigging is secured to the kayak.
what speed are you getting and what lb thrust is your motor?
I haven't been around the kayak for some time and finally got a chance to check. It's 30 lb trust (turns out I had said that in video, but I forgot). I'm not sure about speed. It's faster than paddling by maybe double?
This setup goes good with beer. I hate paddling...
I don't mind paddling, but I do like the idea of going electric with a good beer. :)

Hope you enjoy modification. I debated pedal kayak, and would still like to get one, but after comparing "energy" ratio to distance covered, it's hard to not like the electric. For the price it's a great choice. Pedal plus electic could be the ultimate. ;)

If I was going to put a trolling motor on my kayak, I would want it mounted on the back and then I would run a cable and pulley system up to the seat so I could steer. Or I suppose I could just run 2 motors, one on each side 😂

I don't really know... 4-5 knots perhaps? It's only a 30 lb (30 amp) thrust motor, so It's not real fast.

Yes... battery is mounted on the opposite side of the motor for balance.

Do you know how much the battery weighs? And a rough estimate of the dimensions? Is it the size of a car battery? I just bought this trolling motor and having a hard time finding the correct battery… the one i got (that i haven’t installed yet) weighs about 60lbs😬 wondering if I needed something that big or not 🤷♀️
@@Crystal11.11 I found some small AGM batteries 22 lbs each good for a few hours with a 20 lbs trolling motor. You can also use a small AGM deep cycle wheelchair battery from Canadian tire Parr No. AGMU1 240 CA 200 CCA 43 RC
If you don't put a heavy battery on some sort of soft board or boz in the boat the edge of the battery might ripe the seem and go through the floor ..
I paddled over 4 hours today and I'm 80 yrs old, this may be the way I go, the drills don't do it for me.
That's a lot of paddling. I used to paddle about 45 minutes to destination, hunt, then 35 back (downstream), but the 2nd trip got tougher. And, 'if' I took a 3rd it was really tough. Thus the electric motor. :)

What lbs motor was that, Roger?
I believe the weight is around 30 lbs, with 50 lbs of thrust. The battery weights more than the motor. I think the 12V battery weighs around 40 lbs.
Just a suggestion I mounted motors on both sides of my kayak and that eliminated the torque and weight distribution issues and provides plenty of power with the two 55lbs Newport motors. I got mine for aroung $85 if I recall. It's a sealed lead acid marine battery.
