This time on American Viscountess, I visit spectacular Castle Howard in North Yorkshire. After a devastating fire in November 1940 this exquisite historic house was partly saved when it featured as the lead character in the TV drama series - Brideshead Revisited and in numerous other films and TV series, including the recent Netflix series, Bridgerton.
Castle Howard has been the home of the Howard family since it was built over 300 years ago. Join me as I meet Nick and Vicky Howard to explore their stunning home and see how restoration and recovery from the fire continues.

I watched Brideshead Revisited as a teenager on german tv and I believe it inspired my love to all things british. I lived in London for a year and traveled around Britain, but it took me 40 years to come to Castle Howard and see it in all its glory. It was magnificent and like a dream wandering around the house and the lovely kitchen gardens and park, hardly believing we made it there at last. A little bit later Bridgerton aired on Netflix and featured Castle Howard and this enjoyable lovestory. What a stroke of luck. Thank you for this wonderful hour in the castle and may it bring more visitors to this great estate
I watched Brideshead Revisited when it was first broadcast in the USA. I absolutely loved it. During my first trip to the UK in 1985, I made sure to visit Castle Howard. It was very beautiful and very interesting. The tour guides made sure that the history of the family and the home was emphasized. The TV program was fictional. I was pleased that they did this politely but firmly.
Where can I find Brideshead Revisited ? I checked Netflix and HULU. Maaaybe on U tube 🤔
I haven’t been able to find it either. How come?
@@cherylchickywhen it came to America, I watched it on PBS/Master Piece Theatre. I don’t think they are showing it, presently.
@@TeresaGonzalez-ic1ch I’m now subscribing to PBS Masterpiece 😁👍 in hopes I find it there. Thank you 😊
I can not believe you visited/ filmed Castle Howard! My daughter and I enjoyed reading Brideshead revisited and watch all of the Brideshead films! Thank you so very much!
Oh wow!
The family are so welcoming and open about sharing their home. Their casual demeanor along with their love of the history and natural environment makes quite a story. They have and continue to do a remarkable job of keeping Howard Castle vital today. Thank you for delivering their stories, fascinating.
Last May this world traveler was actually intimidated while approaching the awesome presence of this massive legendary GREAT house. Once inside, the devastating results of that terrible fire, and the loving restorations of its sun-drenched interior transformed Castle Howard into a lovable injured beauty that envelopes one in warmth and joy. The awe is still there - and surrounded by what I feel are the most gorgeous gardens in the UK. Thank you, Julie, for bringing us this . . . 💓🌲🌹🌺🌻🌼🌷🥀
Ya, my head explodes when I see these manors. I really feel I'm a leftover from a different century.
Thank you for this excellent video. I'm a British Expat living in the United States. I have visited Castle Howard and it is a place that you can go back to time and again. The grounds, trees, lakes and gardens are equally spectacular. The domed hall will take your breath away. Julie Montagu does a superb job of taking you through the house and I'm looking forward to visiting again armed with all the knowledge from this program.
Wonderful, Julie; thank you! What a magnificent house and estate. Nick & Vicki seem like lovely people as well.
Those two blouses you’re wearing in this episode look particularly lovely on you, BTW. Great colors and styles for you.
Thank you!
Many years ago I made a long trip from London to see the house from Brideshead. Of course I didn’t know how much was destroyed and needed to be repaired. This vlog was fascinating to me. Thank you for bringing this home to our attention.
Love seeing all the old homes and learning more about their history ❤
It's always the beauty of these Estates we rmbr always such as in Brideshead Revisited. Still even it's damaged rooms i love it's exposed stones & brick. Exquisite, Absolutely lovely Thanx again Julie🇺🇸
I saw this and found it wonderful! But I couldn't figure out where I'd seen you before? You looked so familiar and then it dawned on me, you were on Ladies of London! You were 100% my favorite on that show as even then you really were passionate about your home and keeping it in your family. You've found a subscriber in me! Love these videos!
Oh my! The fabric in the newly decorated bedroom is amazing.
So excited to see Castle Howard
The admiral room is so beautiful..I love the colours...the panneling and the bed..it seems a bit french..the fabrics are exquisite..
What brilliant hosts..I have not visited castle Howard but I know I will in the future
The space in the lower level has such great light it could be artist studios.
Or exhibition space. Imagine being able to hand large scale works in there, just as it is. No restoration needed. ;-)
I have many many wonderful memories of spending days at Castle Howard. My grandparents were friends with the family there in my childhood and I was often able to run around the grounds and house whilst the grown-ups were talking. My grandparents are buried in the 6th century church in Kirkbymoorside nearby. I'm so glad you have enjoyed your time there too.
This is by far my absolute favorite dream castle.
Congratulations to the family for not giving up .
Although I live in New Zealand I have been lucky enough to visit Castle Howard twice over the years, such a magical place!!
Thanks for the ad on mental health. I have been a mental health nurse at Alexian Brothers in Hoffman Estates for years. Thank you again. Also, you look fabulous.. Btw, Castle Howard is just amazing. Many thanks for an excellent vlog.
I will never forget Anthony Andrews' incredible portrayal of Lord Sebastian Flyte in "Brideshead Revisited", the best TV production.
I totally agree with you. I’ve always cherished that version of the book.
I agree. Jeremy Irons was also excellent. When I visited Castle Howard in the 1980s (see comment above), my parents and I caught a glimpse of George Howard walking through one of the rooms open to the public. The fountain had also just been restored.
I still have the Ordinance Survey Atlas that I purchased so we could find our way. We were on a driving vacation; my father wanted to visit places where he was stationed during WW2. We visited his Eighth Army Air Force Base in East Anglia shortly before it was torn down. I have many fond memories of this trip.
Hi Julie and everyone! I'm so excited to be able to watch Live again! I've missed these episodes so much!
Hi Julie .Bonnie from Phoenix Az.
It's also the house used in both versions of Brideshead revisited
Greetings from Atlanta 🎉 I loved Brideshead when it first aired! I still watch the series from time to time. Thanks 😊
Where do you watch it?
Fabulous…I visited as a child in the 70’s, pre Brideshead and it has stuck with me ever since. I remember watching it on tv and loving that I knew the house. It’s an amazing house and deserves its fame. Thank you 🙏🏻
I've spent 3 happy visits at Castle Howard and in the beautiful grounds. It is absolutely beautiful.
So fun to see your joy and happiness doing these videos for us. Thank you
What a fabulous installment! Of course, I adore Bridgerton, but what a fascinating place Castle Howard is. Truly enjoyable and educational episode. Thanks, Julie!
The time it has taken to do as much as they have done over the past 80 years & the amount it has cost them to do it, just goes to show how much it cost the Royal family to restore Windsor Castle after the fire there but of course it being a Royal castle took precedence in restoring it as quickly as possible which was five years.
You are amazing at these interviews, Julie. You obviously put these caretakers and homeowners at ease as they open up about the delights and challenges in being a part of these magnificent estates. Well done!
Wow, thank you!
@@AmericanViscountess ❤️
Absolutely fascinating! Eerily, I was watching a story about Castle Howard yesterday, so was very happy to watch this story too. Thank you Julie. 👍💛
This is so fascinating!! Thank you! Back to the program...😊
Julie, thank you so much! You are doing such an important job of bringing this history and heritage to us. It gives these buildings an additional life span.
This is one of my favorite houses and I was so pleased to see this tour. Thank you!
What an incredible place!
Are there photos of the interior before the fire.? I would find it fascinating to see the original work of crafting that went into the rooms.
Fascinating! Thank you for sharing the story behind the castle in the Bridgerton series which I looove! It seems the estates that are open to evolving with each challenge over time survive the longest. It's a win win for everyone that estates like this one and yours are open for the movies and series to be made in authentic buildings of the time. That last bedroom is gorgeous btw!
What a wonderful documentary. Thank you so much. I love this sort of thing. Will never be able to afford to see the real thing so can see it through your eyes
That basement in the South Wing area of the house that suffered the fire damage would be fabulous space for a Victorian Gin Palace. Professional Lighting can change everything! Perfect for income.
Im just loving this series! ❤ seeing all these historical homes has been such a treat. Thanks Julie!!! Happy holidays
I was there last summer! It’s incredible.
So incredibly beautiful and historical!!
You go girl!! Spectacular piece, thank you for sharing! I have an IMMENSE amount of admiration for you and your team, colleagues, loved ones, etc for the research and work that y’all provide that is ongoing and endless. You are living your purpose and what u are giving back is precious!
Thank you so much! Xx
I was hoping you would visit Castle Howard so glad you did could you do Chatsworth House as well.
AMAZING! Loved watching this! Looking forward to the next installment.
I wish they would leave the fire damaged room the way it is. I love the bare bricks
This is awesome! Shout out to Dr. Chris!
WHAT A BEAUTIFUL CASTLE. The bedrooms. Beautiful.
what an incredible castle - i fell in love with castle howard with the brideshead revisited story it is just glorious and yet so much to still be done.
Fascinating episode! Thank you.
What a great episode. Thank you.
An American here very proud of you!!! Hope that in the future you meet Princes Catherine and Prince William and become friends!!!!❤
Isn’t this home STUNNING!?
Wow, this is absolutely magnificent. It takes your breath away1 I love seeing these homes/castles because they are beautiful and fascinating. As an avid miniaturist, I love getting ideas for my next project! Thank you! I have so much respect for the owners/caretakers of these properties. It is such a huge weight to have to worry about keeping these estates funded and up and running. I can't imagine the pressure of having to worry about being the generation that loses the property. These estates are of HUGE historic significance and must be kept going at all costs. Thanks again1
Wow! Absolutely astounding property and history!! I love Bridgerton and it was so cool to see where it was filmed.
Love from Mary in Southern California 💗
What an incredible castle! I can't wait to see Part II.
Absolutely gorgeous property. Great video. Thank you. Can’t wait to see more ❤
They did an incredible job with reconstruction!
Amazing place. and Huge work they are doing, Thank you for saving history
I so love finding out more about the grand estates of the UK. I have a particular fondness for Castle Howard. So enjoyed this episode.
Wonderful! Love the behind the scenes access :)
oh wonderful! so enjoyed this !
Thank you! Well done!
Our pleasure!
OMG the Admirals room❤❤ it's stunning
Poppy is so regal!❤
This was my of my favorite episodes.
I really enjoyed your video of Castle Howard. Thank you.
Julie you did a wonderful job in this video.
We're now going to have to watch Bridgerton. Such a remarkable estate. (We hope you get back to Italy soon, it's been a wonderful Autumn here...) Maria
I so enjoy each episode!
Great show as usual!❤
Beautiful castle!
I visited in September and it was gorgeous!! A beautiful palace and gardens, plus a great shop at the entrance! There’s a bus from York that you can take if you’re without a car
Thanks for another great show. Please add more diagrams/house drawing to show more specifically the areas being discussed and where you are in the homes ❤ People say things like 'southeast corner' with never a reference to north!
If the East Room is wide enough it would be a lovely wedding area. I went to Castle Howard in 1987 when I was 11. I still remember it.
Would you consider adding a map to your episodes showing where in England we are visiting?
I must say, this is one of my favorite of your videos to date! Absolutely intrigued with the history of Castle Howard and good to learn that the family is embracing "marketing" as a way forward to restoring and maintaining this historic castle. The beauty of the rooms, the richness of the furnishings, paintings, art works, etc., and the ongoing restoration is exciting. Large and exquisite as the rooms are they are inviting; love the ambience. Perhaps another large film production like "Bridgerton" will be made and come knocking at the castle door once again which will hasten the restoration process. Thank you very much and I look forward to the next installment!
Amazing! Thank you Julie!
You are so welcome!
Such a beautiful home ❤
With this "House" I feel always connected with Venetia Stanely-Smith, who died this year (2023) in age of 72 in Ohara (Pref. Kyoto, Japan), but grew up in Howard Castel. Whether same time there are names Curzon and Montagu coming up in connections...
How VERY interesting and different, thank you xo
Delighted you visited Castle Howard. If possible, would you be able to cover Mereworth Castle in Kent ?
I love the original brideshead revisited the new movie was liked to thanks so much for your vids happy holidays to your friends and family
Wonderful castle nad history 👌
Glad you enjoyed it
I would love for you to talk about insurance on Mapperton house/old country homes? Are they insured for full value?? I have always wondered about this
Wow awesome location Big thumbs up 👍
Any time ⏲
Those 300 year old bare Stone walls in the fire damaged rooms are absolutely gorgeous and brilliant. How the stones are laid is architecturally fascinating. It's heartbreaking that they're going cover it all up again, with a redux of the past with mouldings and tapestries. Those rooms have looked like that for nearly 70 years now. It's part of the "organic, evolving" life of the house that should be preserved not covered up. The Howard's are missing a special opportunity. Instead of putting money into restoring the rooms like they were, they should spend money to collect important contemporary British art to display on those beautiful bare stone walls and invite in the latest talent in British arts and crafts, lighting, furniture making and such to redecorate these rooms. Make Howard castle a place for an audience not only looking to the past but those who live in the present and look to the future.
It's a shame the fire damage wasn't included as part of the war in the series when Charles returned in episode one.
Loved hearing the history. I’ve watched Bridgerton but never heard of Bridehead Revisited. Definitely going to check it out now. Thanks for taking us along in visiting this magnificent historic castle 😍😘
"Brideshead Revisited" (1981) starred Jeremy Irons, Sir Lawrence Olivier, Diana Quick and Sir Anthony Andrews. Many critics have considered it the best TV of its era.
@@HerAeolianHarpI would say of any era. Bridgerton? Nothing to do with it.
Loved seeing Castle Howard last year. My only complaint was the old man driving the Kelly Land Car Train wouldn’t stop so I could get on. It was starting to rain and with breathing issues I was in a hurry to catch the bus.
Thanks!
WOW! Thank you!!!!
Wonderful
Julie, have you ever heard the saying. Y'all come back now, yeh hear.... Lol. Great videos 💯%
Same thing happened to Highclere Castle used in Downton Abbey
Thank you. A very educational episode, as I am not much of a TV watcher. Full restoration of Castle Howard in 100 years perhaps?
It took one hundred years to build it they said 😅 hope it doesn't take 100 yrs to re build 🙏
Nice and historical catle in Dosert.
Castle Howard is in Yorkshire not Dorset
Really enjoyed Howard House. I would live to know the paint color in the Admirals' bedroom.
Absolutely beautiful! What suburb of Chicago are you from? I'm from East Chicago Indiana, if you know where that is? Not far from Chicago.
Love this episode Julie. Can anyone please tell me what old movie was made in this castle? I can’t hear the name they say. Thank you I want to watch it 🥰👍😍
What is the song at 22:30? It’s gorgeous and I can’t seem to get a audio match
