If your dispenser makes ice but will not drop any, or if you can not get water, watch this video. If you don't hear a "click" noise when you push in your ice dispenser handle or the water dispenser handle, you likely have a broken switch or a broken switch mount. In this video, I show you how to open the dispenser and fix the mount. You can also replace the switch if needed. The fridge I am working on is a Kenmore but you will find that many other brands are built the same.

Thank you so much for this detailed video. I just fixed my 13-year-old Whirlpool side by side refrigerator. The ice in the door was still working but the water stopped about 2 weeks ago. I had about decided to replace it rather than spend money on what could be the first of many repairs, considering its age. I had already fixed a problem with the drain in the freezer that was clogged using a CZcams video so decided to see if I could figure this one out as well. It took me about 45 minutes to complete but a lot of that was because my tools are out in my workshop in the barn, and I had to make two trips. (I know better than to just bring one drill bit.) Plus, I have arthritis in my right hand and that makes things a little slower as well. So, thank you again for saving me either the cost of a new fridge or a service call/repair. Gratefully, this 69-year-old handy woman.

Adam you are my NEW BEST FRIEND. My water dispenser stopped working...And as you've showed..the bits had broken inside.
I did exactly what you showed step by step. I drilled and anchored with long screws ...HALLELUJAH the water dispenser worked!!! Not bad for a 61 year old girl :) Thank you for your kindness in helping people like myself that would go into bankruptcy hiring "fixit men" to fix what I can with your help. Your Mama should be proud!! Many many thanks!!

I had EXACTLY the same problem with two broken posts on the ice dispenser switch side and one broken post on the other side. I did EXACTLY the same repair and got EXACTLY the same results. We are happy that we once again have ice delivered through the door. AMAZING. Thanks for making such a helpful video.

Thank you for your detailed video tutorial! My 20 yr old Whirlpool side by side refrigerator has the same problem as in your video. The ice dispenser has not been working for the past 5 years, but is still making ice, just not down the dispenser, so we just open the freezer door to get ice. You are a god send. Thank you very much again for your detailed video.

Thank you so much for creating this video! I had just bought a $140 replacement auger motor and was very disappointed when it didn't fix my problem. Then I found this video, followed your instructions to remove the front panel and found that the plastic posts had broken off just like yours did. I reattached the switch with screws and I now again have ice dispensing from my 15 year old Kenmore refrigerator! You're a life saver!

Thanks for your subversive work! You help us get around the industry's traps. Sears charges $20 for this designed-to-fail plastic part, surprisingly cheap considering pricing of other parts (their Chief Greed Officer must have overlooked this opportunity). Your fix is genius!

I know this is an old post but it helped me immediately. My husband had taken the ice maker apart and found those exact little pieces had broken off. We fixed it by using some small tie wraps instead of screws. The fridge/freezer is about 20 years old but still working like a charm. Thank you!!!!

Great video! I also had exactly the same problem. 3 of my 4 posts were broken and one of the retaining hooks. I used #4 machine screws with lock washers and nuts, which by the way are just the right size to go through the holes on the switch. My wife was ready to go shopping. Fortunately your video helped me dodge a $3000 dollar bullet. Thanks a bunch.

Adam, thanks! Thanks to your video, in about 30 minutes and with 1 screw I had my water dispenser working again. My model didn't have 2 little grooves under the front trim. Instead, I had to remove the drip tray and then 2 screws that held the black trim in place and then was able to pop it out. Great narration, high quality video, and well detailed. Glad I stumbled upon it before digging around the back of the fridge by the water line.

THANKS ADAM! Just finished the repair and the ice is flowing again. I did one thing different. Didn't have any screws lying around so I went to the hardware store and bought 4-40 x 1 1/4 inch machine screws, lock washers and nuts. 4 of each of these. Then drilled two 7/64" holes where the pins were located. the 4-40 screws slid right through the holes, spacers and micro switches. For $1.85 both switches are now fixed. Again, thank you!

Thank you Adam, took about 15-20 minutes in total. I didn't need to remove all the wires from the bracket, only had a problem on the ice maker site (so far). It's amazing how many people had this problem. So far in addition to this I've had to replace the optic sensor on the ice maker twice. Thanks to CZcams, guys like AdamDIY and online parts dispensers I've probably saved $600 in repair house calls.

Thanks a bunch. My issue was the water dispenser, the ice dispenser worked fine. Yup opened the front casing and the switch was lose. The plastic holder was broken so the switch wasn’t pressed on. My front casing was easier to take of as i had all the cables connect to a white adapter that snaps on/off so i didnt even have to unplug each red cable etc. i used one of them zip ties and tightened the switch good in place. Hooked everything back together. Plugged back my fridge on and water works great! Thanks!! Great help!!

Hey Adam - you ARE THE MAN!! I watched your video above and switch repair/check.
My problem was that the ice dispenser did NOT work. No sound, the light did not come on when the lever pad was pushed in, no sound of the auger turning - nothing!
The water dispenser works perfectly, the light works, etc. The ice maker works great!
So, I noticed that you said check the 'switch' on the cube side of the frig. . . I did and I noticed that the 'hammer head' was NOT contacting the small switch part on the upper side of the switch when I pushed the ice dispenser lever inward. You said if you push the little black portion on the switch and you can hear it CLICK - the switch is probably good. The switch 'clicked' . . . so I assumed that the switch was good!
The switch needed to be pushed upward in order for the 'hammer head' to make good solid contact. I had to drill a small hole on the bottom of switch (white plastic that hold the connector in place to the switch) and put in a 1/2" long screw to hold the switch upward.
It worked perfectly, the ice dispenser WORKS GREAT again THANKS TO YOU!!
    Butch Derksen-Duluth, MN. Saved me $150.00 service call. . . .

Very informative and great DIY repair!!! I did not have a small enough screws so I also used zip ties for a quick fix like one of the comments below. Hopefully the ice dispenser side doesn't break too, but if it does, I now know how to fix it. Only took me 3 hours, a drill with a small drill bit, and 2 zip ties. Life's great!!! Plus I found its better to take a picture of the wire coding side of the front panel to help with seeing what connects to what instead of a picture of the connected product. Keep up the good work AdamDIY.

I'll provide one note that may be helpful for others... My fridge was a 2001 model whirlpool gold and my front bezel removes differently than yours. My drip pan slides out to expose two screws. You remove those two screws and the bezel just lifts off by lifting upward. This is a little easier than having to pry off the bottom first. Thought I would share in case anyone was having problems removing the bezel...

This was fantastic. I had already ordered the switch housing and it literally took me less than 15 minutes to finish the job. I also replaced the ice dispenser flap as I had begun to see ice build up on the inside (air leak).
    Thanks very much.

Thank You for giving me the tutorial on removing the front panel to inspect the switches
your instructions made it easy. I was able to replace the switch myself...

This was such an easy fix! For a few screws and drilling some holes what a money saver that will permanently fix a poor design problem. Kenmore/Whirlpool should have used used screw to fasten the switches in the first place..

Super helpful video...thanks so much for your fix using screws in place of the broken plastic pieces. Worked like a charm for me!

Thank you for this video - mine was a different model so the disassembly was a bit more extensive - but your guidance saved me a device visit plus parts. Thank you!

Great solution with very thorough instructions and helpful tips along the way. My dispenser is the same model, and it turned out that exactly the same plastic posts were broken on mine as were on yours!

Thanks for posting this. Same problem on my Kenmore. Drill and screws saved the day. Had difficulty removing the front plate / control panel. Must have calcified due to age of the fridge. Also, instead of removing each wire on the control panel, was able to detach using the wiring harness connector. Thanks again. :-)

+EfficiencyGeek I am surprised at how many people are having the same problem. It's obviously a design flaw. Glad to hear you got it working again!

Thanks for the video Adam, mine broke and I was thinking of gluing it but that wouldn't have worked very well. Used your method today and it worked like a charm!

I tackled this project today because the two plastic clamps on the clear plastic ice chute has become weakened to the point in which the top of the chute would partially fall and become stuck, allowing ice to flow even after pulling your cup away. You would manually have to re-position the chute back into place to stop the flow. To fix this, I bored two small holes and used picture hanger wire by wrapping, twisting, and tucking it securely around the plastic tabs onto which the aforementioned clamps once attached.
During this fix, I found that the ice was no longer dispensing. Frustrated but determined, I got online and found this video. Once I removed the panel and wires (after noting and marking them with a sharpie), I noticed both white "spikes" on the ice dispenser were broken away. I don't know if they too had become weakened over time but nonetheless I'm certain that I inadvertently broke them by pulling twisting the panel while inspecting (be careful here!) Using your suggestion, I found two screws that were just slightly larger in width and length than the spikes and screwed them securely into place (through the existing holes in the spacer and the switch). Fortunately, I was able to pull out the white housing far enough that it did not need to be removed to complete the fix.
I want to thank you immensely for recording this video...very admirable!! As with most DIY projects, I'm left wondering what was saved by avoiding a service call.
